The loading machine generally comprisesa mobile base I having a frame 2 mounted on conventional crawler'treads 3 whichmay be driven and controlled to effect propulsion'and-steerin ofthe machine in a well-known mannen. Carried above the base frame is avibratory ores.- cillatory gathering and elevating. head thaving, as shown in Fig. 1,. a relatively wide frontgathering head portion 5 and a relatively narrow troughlike portion 5 extending rearwardly of the widened portion, and arranged to gather and elevate the material to be loaded and to discharge the material rearwardlyof the machine. The frontiwidenedgathering head portion 5 has a serrated front penetrating edge 1, and is formed with forwardly'diverging sidewalls 8 whichconverge into the parallel longitudinal sidewallss9.

By supplying liquid under pressure to-the cylinders of these jacks the tiltable frame together. with theloading-head may be swung upwardly about the pivot I i with respect to the base, and when liquid is vented from the cylinders of these jacks the frame and loading head may be swung downwardly.- By trapping liquid within'the jack cylinders" the tiltable frame and the loading head may be locked in adjusted position. The upper tiltable frame i!) has suitable curved guides i8 slidably engaging arcuate guideways 3.19 on the forward portion of the base frame for guiding I and which are secured. to crank arms 21, the
latter in turn being pivotally connected at 28 to links 29. The links 29 are pivotally connected at 30 to arms 3| integral with the front hanger links I l. Thus, when the eccentrics 23 are driven by the motor 2|, the gathering and elevating head 4 is rapidly oscillated back and forth or vibrated on its arm and link mountings, in the manner fully described in my copending application Serial No. 788,703 mentioned above, to effect gathering and loading of the loose material on the floor.
In this improved construction, to prevent the; front penetrating edge 1 cf the widened front portion of the head from digging into the bottom during the loading operation, the forward part of the frame [0 has forward side projections 32 extending forwardly and outwardly beneath the head and provided with bottom floor engaging shoes 33, and with upper guide portions 34 engaging the straight outer sides 35 of the forward widened portion of the head for guiding the latter during its oscillation or vibratory motion. These floor engaging shoes 33 serve to prevent the penetrating edge of the head from running into the fioor in the lowered position of the head, as shown in Fig. 2 and at all times adequately support the head in its proper position with respect to the fioor during the gathering and loading operation.
The loading machine may be propelled about the mine and maneuvered with respect to the work by the crawler treads 3 in a well-known manner. .'During transport, the forward ends of the gathering and elevating head 4 and the tiltable upper frame It are held raised above the floor level by the hydraulic jacks i5, and when the working place is reached, the jacks may be operated to lower the frame shoes 33 into contact with the floor to bring the penetrating edge I of the head into close adjacency with the floor. The
motor 25 may then be operated to impart, through the arms and links, a rapid oscillatory or vibratory motion to the head in a direction generally lengthwise thereof, and, concurrently, the crawler treads may be operated to advance the head into the material to be loaded, to feed the widened front head portion 5 beneath the loose material. As the head is rapidly oscillated or vibrated, the loose material is gathered thereon and moved rearwardly and upwardly along the trough portion 5 to discharge at the elevated rear end of the latter, all in the manner fully disclosed in my above mentioned copending application.

Thus, the gathering and elevating head rapidly and continuously gathers and conveys the mate rial, and the material moves in a substantially steady stream rearwardly and upwardly along the trough to discharge. The forward guiding portions on the tiltable upper frame with its shoes 33 slidingly engaging the floor provide adequate guides for the vibrating head and serve to prevent digging of the forward penetrating edge of the head into the floor or bottom.
As a result of this invention, an improved loading apparatus is provided wherein the vibratory loading head of the machine is adequately supported and guided during the gathering and loading operation. By the provision of the shoes and guides on the frame projections beneath the vibratory head the penetrating edge of the latter is prevented from inadvertently digging into the floor when in lowered position, and serve ade- While there is in this application specifically described one form which the invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that this form of the same is shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a materialloading apparatus, the combination comprising a support, a frame pivotally mounted on said support to swing in vertical planes relative thereto about a horizontal axis, said frame having a forward floor engaging portion rigidly connected thereto for limiting downward swinging movement of said frame, and a vibratory gathering and elevating head mounted in a forwardly and downwardly inclined position on said frame for vibratory gathering and elevating movement relative thereto and having a front gathering portion provided with a penetrating edge, said rigidly connectedfloor engaging portion of said frame underlying and engaging said front gathering portion and providing a guideway for the latter to maintain the penetrating edge thereof in the desired relation to the floor.
2. In a material loading apparatus, the combination comprising a support, a frame pivotally mounted on said support to swing in vertical planes relative thereto about a horizontal axis, said frame having laterally spaced side portions each provided with a floor engaging shoe for limiting downward swinging movement of said frame, and a vibratory gathering and elevating head mounted in a forwardly and downwardly inclined position on said frame for vibratory gathering and elevating movement relative thereto and having a front athering portion provided with a penetrating edge, said spaced side portions of said frame extending along the sides of said front gathering portion beneath the latter and having upper guides engaging said gathering portion to maintain the penetrating edge thereof in the desired relation to the floor.
3. In a material loading apparatus, the combination comprising a support, means for mountmg said support for adjustment in a vertical direction, an oscillatory gatherer having a transverse forward penetrating edge, and means for mounting said gatherer on said support for oscillatory movement relative thereto and having a forward receiving end, and said support having a floor engaging portion rigidly connected thereto and underlying the receiving end of said gatherer and providing a guideway-for the latter for maintaining said penetrating edge of said gatherer in the desired relation to thefloor, said guideway provided by said rigid floor-engaging port1on extending generally in the direction of oscillation of said gatherer.
4. l fn a material loading apparatus, the combination comprising a, supporting frame, an oscillatory, gatherer having a front penetrating edge, means for mounting said gatherer on said frame for longitudinal oscillatory movement with respect thereto with said penetrating edge disposed wardly beneath said gatherer, said projections 5 having shoes engaging the floor near said penetrating edge and guides extending generally in the direction of oscillation of said gatherer and engaging the sides of the forward portion of said gatherer, for guiding said gatherer during its oscillation and for preventing digging of said face, and guiding means carried by and rigidly connected to the forward portion of said frame and having shoes engaging the floor in adjacency to said forward penetrating edge and lateral guide portions engaging the'sides of the forward portion of said head, said guide portions providing a guideway extending generally in the direction of oscillation of said head, whereby said head is guided during oscillation thereof and digging of said penetrating edge into the floor is prevented.
6. In a material loading apparatus, the combination comprising a, support, a frame pivotally mounted on said support to swing in vertical planes relative thereto about a horizontal axis, said frame having a forwardly projecting portion rigidly connected thereto and provided with a floor-engaging shoe for limiting downward swing-' ing movement of said frame, and a vibratory gathering and elevating head mounted in a forwardly and downwardly inclined position on said frame for vibratory gathering and elevating movement relative thereto and having a front gathering portion provided with a transverse penetrating edge, said forwardly projecting frame portion having laterally spaced side portions extending along the sides of said front gathering portion beneath the latter and having upper guides engaging the sides of said gathering portion and cooperating to provide a guideway extending generally in the direction of oscillation of said head for guiding the latter and to maintain said penetrating edge in the desired relation to the floor.
7. A material loading apparatus asset forth in claim 6 wherein said forwardly projecting frame portion has lateral side portions each providing a floor-engaging shoe, said laterally spaced side portions supporting said upper guides and extending along the side edges of said front gathering portion.
8. A material loading apparatus as set forth in claim 7 wherein the sides of said front gathering portion diverge forwardly and outwardly and said upper guides of said laterally spaced side portions engage said diverging sides of said front gathering portion. 9. A material loading apparatus as set forth in claim 8 wherein said diverging sides of said front gathering portion have angularly disposed plane guiding surfaces and said spaced side portions have upstanding forward guides with which said plane surfaces slidingly engage during oscillation of said head.
