Description

Oct. 28, 1952 s. J. KREINER ADJUSTABLE HINGE Filed March "as, 1947 w m M N R E. w z w 7 20 a W J 2? 3 fl w 7 4 2 l w a 2 Z w Patented Oct. 28, 1952 UNI ED STATES PATENT ADJUSTABLE HINGE SylvesterJ.v Kreiner, Brunswick, Ohio Application March 28, 1947, Serial No. 737,847
In hanging the usual door, the door is placed in position in the frame and places for the hinges are marked on both the door and frame, and after cutting recesses in the parts, the hinge plates or leaves are attached by screws and. the like. Once the hinge plates are in place, it is very difficult to adjust the positions thereof, because the bolt or screw openings have been formed in the door and frame. and these cannot be changed without changing the location of the hinge. Furthermore, in doors for ice boxes, refrigerators, and freezing compartments, it is absolutely essential to obtain an absolute air-tight seal, and for the reasons stated above, this is substantially impossible with the usual type of hinge. With these and other thoughts in mind,
this invention contemplates a hinge having hinge leaves and mounting plates which have cooperating ribs and grooves enabling adjusting the positions of the hinge leaves relative to the mounting plates which have fixed positions.
The primary object of this invention is, therefore, to provide means for mounting hinges on doors, door frames and the like, wherein the position of the hinge may be adjusted to adjust the door in the door opening or frame without changing the position or mounting elements which are'fixed in position.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for obtaining positive registration between doors, door frames and door openings by adjusting the positions of the hinges.
Another object of the invention is to provide means in combination with a hinge, whereby the position of a door mounted by the hinge may be adjusted vertically and horizontally.
A further object of the invention is to provide a combination adjustable hinge for doors and the like which is of a simple an economical construction.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description, taken 2 Claims. (01. 16-129) I and a door, parts of which are also broken away.
, Figure 2 is a cross-section through the hinge illustrated in Figure 1, taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1, with parts of the door and door frame upon which the hinge is mounted broken away.
Referring now to the drawings, wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts, the hinge of this invention includes hinge plates l and II hingedly connected by a hinge pin 12 through barrels I3, [4 and I5, and base or mounting plates l6 and H.
In the illustrated hinge, a single forwardlyor outwardly offset barrel I3 is formed integrally with the inward edge of one hinge plate N. The barrels l4 and I5 are attached to an outwardly and forwardly directed flange I 8 on the inner edge of the other hinge plate II by screws IS. The plate I0 is provided at opposite ends with pairs of bolt slots which extend longitudinally of the plate, and the plate II is provided with transversely elongated bolt slots 2|. The inner surface of the hinge plate I I is formed with longitudinally extending grooves defining ribs 22 positioned to engage between ribs 23 defined by grooves formed in the outer surface of the base plate H. The inner surface of the plate "I is provided with laterally extending grooves defining ribs 24 positioned to'engage between corresponding ribs 24 defined by grooves in the base plate [6.
The bolt holes 25 in the base plate I6, and 26 in the base plate I! are not slotted, whereby the base plates remain fixed in position onrthe surfaces of a door 21 anda frame 28; and with the hinge plates l0 and I6 held by bolts 29 and the plates II and I held by bolts 30. The door may be adjusted vertically by loosening the bolts .29 and moving the plate II) in relation to the plate I6, and it may also be adjusted laterally by loosening the bolts 30 and moving the plate H in a direction across theplate l1. With the door properly adjusted to accurately register with the door opening or frame, the bolts 29 and 30 are tightened so that the grooves and ribs of the hinge and base plates will be positively secured in engagement. With a hinge including these elements, it is, therefore, possible to positively adjust the position of a door in relation to a door opening or frame both vertically and laterally without changing the position of the bolts or screws of the hinges in the door and frame.
It will be understood that modifications may be made in the design or arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. In an adjustable hinge, a first hinge leaf comprising a base plate having a side adapted to engage the surface of the object to which said first hinge leaf is to be secured, transverse ribs formed on the other side of said base plate, and a hinge plate overlying said other side of said base plate and formed with transverse ribs selectively engaged between transverse ribs on the base plate, said hinge plate being formed with a longitudinally elongated bolt slot and said base plate being formed with a bolt hole with which the bolt slot is registered, a bolt extending through said bolt slot and through said bolt hole and arranged to be threaded into the object to which said first hinge leaf is to be secured so as to secure said first hinge leaf thereto with said hinge plate adjusted longitudinally of said base plate, a fixed hinge barrel formed on alongitudinal edge of said hinge plate and a hinge pin journalled in said fixed hinge barrel-and "extending beyond an end of saidfixed'hinge-barrelra second hinge leaf comprising a second base plate having a side adaptedto engage'the surface of the object to which said: secondhinge leaf is to be secured, longitudinal ribs formed in the other side of said second base plate, a second hinge plate overlying said other side of "said second base" plate and formed with longitudinal ribs selectively engaged between longitudinal ribs on said second base plate, said second hinge plate being formed with a. transversely elongated bolt slot registered with a bolt hole formed in said second baseplate, a bolt extendingthrough the bolt slotand the bolt hole and arranged to be threaded into the object to which said second hinge leaf is to be secured, an adjustable hinge barrel secured on a longitudinal 'si'de'edge ofthe' hinge plate of said second hinge leaf, said longitudinally adjustable'hinge barrel being j-our nalled'onthe hinge pin at one end of the hinge'barrel of the first hinge leaf and servingte connect the first and second hinge leaves, and securing-means securing said adjustable hingeb'arrel to the hingepl-ate of the second hinge leaf and to thehing'e pin andenabling said adjustable hinge barrel to be adjusted longitudinally on said hinge pin to accommodate alongitudinal adjustment of thehinge plate ofthe first hinge leaf relative to the base plate ofthe first hingeleaf b v a 2.*In an adjustablehinge; a first hinge'leaf comprising a base plate having a sideadapted to engage the-' surface 'of' the object 'towhich said first hinge leaf-is; to -be secured, transverse ribs formed onthe other side ofsaid base plate, and
