Application October 9, 1950, Serial No. 189,161
ihis invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in display albums, more particularly display albums of the type wherein a plurality of transparent folders are interposed between a pair of covers, and the principal object of the invention is to facilitate convenient and expeditious removal and replacement of the individual folders at any desired point in the album, so that the number of folders may be increased or decreased as required by the display needs.
The above object is achieved by the provision of novel hinge means for separably connecting together the several folders, while an important feature of the invention resides in the specific structure of the individual folders which include integral hinge knuckles for connection to other folders and to the covers of the album.
Some of the advantages of the invention lie in its simplicity of construction, in its efficient and expeditious operation, in its pleasing appearance, and in its adaptability to economical manufacture.
With the above more important objects and features in view and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially in the construction and arrangement of parts as shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the album with the front cover open, the hinge means being shown partly in section so as to reveal the construction thereof;
Figure 2 is an elevational view of the bound" or hinged edge of the album;
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view on an enlarged scale, taken substantially in the plane of the line 3--3 in Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a developed plan view of one of the transparent folders;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a folder in a nearly closed position; and
Figure 6 is an edge view of the subject shown in Figure 5.
Like characters of reference are employed t designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of a display album which is designated generally by the reference character It and, broadly, embodies in its construction a pair of covers I2 and a plurality of transparent folders it which are interposed between the covers, as is best shown in Figure 3.
The several folders M are identical in construction, each consisting of a sheet of transparent 1 Claim. (Cl. 129-20) material which is shown in its developed form at It in Figure 4. The sheet i6 is folded or doubled upon itself along the outer edge of the folder indicated at 18, whereby to afford front and rear walls 20, 22, respectively, and a pocket 26 therebetween.
The walls 22, 24 have free upper and lower edges 23, 38, respectively, and free inner edges 32, so that the pocket 26 is open at the top and bottom of the folder, as shown.
The inner edge portions 32 of the walls 22, 24 are notched as shown in Figure 4, so as to afford sets of vertically staggered, longitudinally spaced tongues 34 which are integral with the sheet l6 and are arcuated so as to provide sets of coaxial hinge knuckles 38, 33 at the inner edges of the respective walls 22, 2d.
The hinge knuckles 36 on the wall 22 are offset laterally through the spaces between the hinge knuckles 38 to the rear of the back wall it, and, similarly, the knuckles 3% on the back wall are offset through the spaces between the knuckles 36 to the front of the front wall 22, this condition prevailing when the sheet H5 is folded so that the walls 22, 24 thereof are in closely spaced or contacting relation.
Accordingly, when the invention is assembled, the knuckles 35 of one folder may be placed in coaxial register with the knuckles 38 of the adjacent folder, and wire rods or hinge pins til may be inserted in the coaxial, registering knuckles for sustaining the several folders in an assembled position. Of course, individual folders may be added or removed at any desired point in the album by simply withdrawing the appropriate hinge pin, and it is to be noted that apart from hingedly connecting the folders together, the interfitting knuckles 36, 33 also serve to close the inner edge of each folder so as to frictionally sustain in the pocket 26 thereof a photograph or other matter which is to be displayed. The display material may be inserted through either the open top or bottom of the folder pocket, and if desired suitable cards 42 may be inserted in the pockets of the folders as shown in Figure 3, so as to afford substantial backing for the photographs or other material which is being displayed.
The covers l2 of the album may be of any suitable construction, such as for example, each cover may consist of a relatively stiff inner panel 44 provided at the outer surface thereof with a relatively soft filler or insert 46, the whole being covered by an outer wrapper 48 and an inner wrapper sheet 50.
Suitable strips 52 are secured to the covers by being embedded between the wrappers 48, 50 as shown in Figure 3, the strips 52 being equipped with additional hinge knuckles 54 for connection to the knuckles of the outermost folders I4 in the set, so that the folders as well as the covers are held in an assembled position.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly understood from the foregoing disclosure, and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.
I-Iaving described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In a discerptible book structure, the combination of a plurality of leaves each comprising a single sheet of material doubled upon itself and providing a pocket having open upper and lower edges, a closed outer edge and free juxtaposed inner edges, a set of at least three tubular coaxial hinge knuckles spaced along the entire length of one inner edge of said sheet and having their axis offset beyond the other inner edge thereof, a set of at least three tubular coaxial hinge knuckles spaced along substantially the entire length of said other inner edge of the sheet and having their axis ofiset beyond the first mentioned inner edge through the spaces between the first set of knuckles, the knuckles on each inner edge of the sheet corresponding in length to the spaces between the knuckles on the other edge whereby to close the entire length of the inner edge of said pocket, the knuckles on the respective inner edges of each sheet being disposed between and coaxial with knuckles on sheets adjacent thereto whereby to provide continuous tubular hinge members consisting of at least six abutting knuckles each and extending from the top to the bottom of said leaves, and removable hinge pins positioned in said hinge members for separably connecting said leaves together.
