This invention relates to door frames partic ularly of the sliding door type where a door slides or rolls into the intermediate section of a wall, and in particular a frame formed around a door opening of a plaster wall with a metal strip of channel-like cross section having a channel for receiving an inner wall member and another channel for receiving the outer layer of plaster with a backing of rock lath, or the like and also having a tongue extended from the Opposite face for positioning an inner molding strip or jamb thereon. The frame also includes a similar member and associated elements positioned in the opposite side of the wall and the outer edges are covered with molding strips whereby a complete door frame is provided.
The purpose of this invention is to provide an inner foundation member for door frames of the sliding door type wherein inner wall members and layers of plaster are retained in spaced relation to a door. In the conventional type of sliding or rolling door frame where a door slides between side sections of a wall it is difficult to hold the wood finishing strips of the frame to prevent scraping and binding between the door and frame members resulting from warping and settling of the parts. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates a U-shaped frame forming a foundation member positioned on each side of the wall with each frame member formed with receiving and retaining channels for elements of the wall.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide a structural shape formed to be incorporated in a side of a wall whereby an inner foundation member of the wall is retained in position by a channel provided therefor and the plaster and foundation elements for the plaster are retained in a separate channel whereby with the parts covered by molding and side strips the parts are rigidly and permanently secured in position.
Another object of the invention is to provide mounting elements for edges of wall structures whereby a centrally disposed door receiving slot is maintained in operative position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a foundation or forming element for positioning and retaining wall forming elements on both sides of a wall around a sliding door opening which is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies a structural shape or framing member formed with a flat web having flanges extended at the edges and also at points intermediate of the edges from one side and with a small tongue positioned intermediate of the edges and extended from the opposite side and these elements are framed into a wall around a door opening with the elements positioned in both sides of the door opening and on both sides of the wall and also on both sides of the wall at the upper end of the opening.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view illustrating a door frame in a section of a wall with part of the wall and frame broken away showing a slot intermediate of the width of the wall for receiving a door.
Figure 2 is a sectional plan taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1 illustrating both sides of a door jamb with a door positioned in a slot in the center of the wall.
Figure 3 is an elevational view showing a portion of the foundation member looking toward the outer surface thereof as indicated by the arrow designated at Figure 3 on Figure 5 of the drawing.
Figure 4 is a similar view looking toward the opposite side of the member as indicated by the arrow designated as Figure 4 in Figure 5 of the drawing.
Figure 5 is a detail showing a short section of the metal frame member with the member shown in section.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved door jamb framing member of this invention includes a plate ll} having a tongue H on the outer surface with a narrow flange l2 on one edge, a comparatively wide flange I3 on the opposite edge and a web l4 having converging sides positioned intermediate of the edges.
Strips of material of this formation are assembled to form a U-shape frame corresponding to a door opening as indicated by the numeral lfiinawall IS.
A pair of these frames are positioned in a door opening with the outer surfaces of the flanges l2 flush with a finished wall surface and with these frames in position inner wall panels I! and I8 are installed with the outer edges thereof extending into channels formed by the inner flanges l3 and. webs M, as shown in Figure 3.
The framing members ID are secured to inner facing or molding strips I 9 and 20 by nails 2| and 22 and the strips l9 and 20 are provided with grooves 23 and 24, respectively which are positioned to receive the tongues I I of the framing members Ill. The nails are driven through the plate ID of the framing members, as shown in Figure 2.
The framing members and strips [9 and 26 are secured to the edges of the wall members IT and I3 by nails 25, and the nails 25 are also driven through the walls or plates it! of the framin members.
With these parts in position metal lath, sheet rock, wire mesh or other plaster supporting elements, as indicated by the numerals 26 and 21 are positioned against the panels I"! and 18 with the edges extended into the framing member and a finishing coat of plaster as indicated by the numerals 28 and 29 is applied over the members 28 and 21' with the edge of the plaster extended into the channel of each of the framing members formed by the flanges l2.
The door frame may be completed by the side molding strips 30 which extend upwardly on both sides and across the upper end, also on both sides of the wall.
With the parts arranged in this manner a door, as indicated by the numeral 3| is free to slide or roll back and forth in the door frame or opening.
It will be understood that modifications may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. A door jamb framing member comprising an elongated flat plate having a longitudinally disposed tongue extended from one side and positioned intermediate of the edges thereof, longitudinally disposed flanges on the edges and extended from the side opposite to that from which the tongue extends, and a longitudinally disposed web also extended from th side opposite to that from which the tongue extends and positioned intermediate of the said flanges, the Width of the flange on one edge of the plate being greater than that of the flange on the opposite edge and the width of the tongue intermediate of the flanges being less than that of the flange on one edge of the plate and greater than that of the flange on the opposite edge of the plate.
2. A door jamb framing member comprising an elongated flat plate having a longitudinally disposed tongue extended from one side and positioned intermediate of the edges thereof, longitudinally disposed flange-s on the edges and extended from the side Opposite to that from which the tongue extends, and a longitudinally disposed web also extended from the side opposite to that from which the tongue extends and positioned intermediate of the said flanges, the width of the flange on one edge of the plate being greater than that of the flange on the opposite edge and the width of the tongue intermediate or" the flanges being less than that of the flange on one edge of the plate and greater than that of the flange on the opposite edge of the plate, and wherein with the framing member positioned in the surface of a wall around a door opening the outer surface of the narrow flange is positioned flush with the outer surface of the plaster of the framing members 4 wall and the channel formed between the wide flange on the opposite edge and the intermediate web provides a channel for receiving an inner wall panel.
3. In a door jamb, the combination which comprises framing members positioned on opposite sides of the lamb with the inner surfaces thereof in spaced relation providing a slot for a door, said including flat plates with tongues on the outer surfaces positionedsubstantially midway of the width of the plates, flanges extended from the edges on the sides of the plates opposite to that from which the tongues extend and webs extended from the sides of the plates from which the flanges extend with the web and flange on one side positioned to receive theedge of a'wall framing member and with the flange on the opposite edge positioned whereby the outer surface thereof is flush with the outer surface of a plaster layer carried by supporting elements positioned against the inner wall panel and in which the edges of the supporting elements and plaster layer are positioned in a chan nel of the said framing member.
4. In a door jamb, the combination which comprises framing members positioned on opposite sides of the jamb with the inner surfaces thereof in spaced relation providing a slot for a door, said framing members including flat plates with tongues on the outer surfaces positioned substantially midway of the width of the plates, flanges extended from the edges on the sides of the plates opposite to that from which the tongues extend and webs extended from the sides of the plates from which the flanges extend with the web and flange on one side positioned to receive the edge of a wall framing member and with the flange on the opposite edge positioned whereby the outer surface thereof is flush with the outer surface of a plaster layer carried by supporting elements positioned against the inner wall panel and in which the edges of the supporting elements and plaster layer are positioned in a channel of the said framing member, an inner molding strip positioned over the imier face of the said framing member, and a side molding strip positioned over the adjoining part of the plaster and also over the said inner molding strip of the door lamb.
