1 Claim.

Our invention relates to fasteners for the marble fronts of crypts and columbarium niches for cinerary urns, and is designed as an improvement over the fasteners forming the subject matter of our U. S. Patent No. 2,363,156, dated November 21, 1941, U. S. Patent No. 2,080,190, dated May 11, 1937, to J. B. Sinner, and our copending application, Serial No. 69,016 filed January 3, 1949, now Patent No. 2,574,938.

The primary object of our invention is to provide a simplified fastener better adapted, than other fasteners, for use with such crypt or niche fronts and especially designed to compensate for Variations in thickness of the fronts.

Another object is to provide a fastener for the purpose set forth with a base plate which can be stamped out of and otherwise formed from sheet brass, to reduce the cost of manufacture thereof.

Other and subordinate objects within the purview of our invention, together with the precise nature of our improvements, will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claim are read with reference to the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification.

In said drawings:

Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in front elevation of our improved fastener applied;

Figure 2 is a view in perspective of the base plate and parts carried thereby, drawn to a larger scale;

Figure 3 is a view in vertical section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1; and

Figure 4 is a view in vertical section taken on the line 44 of Figure 3.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, our improved fastener l is of the same general type as those disclosed in the above noted patents and application, in that it is designed for anchoring to a crypt wall structure 2 at the intersection of vertical and horizontal crypt walls 3, 4 forming casket compartments, or cinerary urn niches 5 arranged in vertical and horizontal rows, the fastener I being adapted to fasten together contiguous corners of closure fronts, or slabs 6 arranged in rows like the compartments or niches.

The fastener I comprises a cruciform base plate 1 having upper and lower rectangular arms 8, 9, and similarly shaped side arms I0, I I. A central vertical slot I2 is formed in the upper arm 8 and a similar slot l3 in the lower arm 9. Upper and lower bolts I4, I 5 with front lock nuts l6, l1 thereon are extended through the slots [-2, 13, respectively, and threaded into circumferentially beaded sockets l8, l9 embedded in the crypt vertical walls 3, whereby said plate 1 is attached to said wall in forwardly spaced relation thereto behind the fronts 6 with the side arms I0, II and said plate I centered behind the icontiguous corners of said fronts.

The side arms 10, II of the base plate I are formed with a pair of horizontally spaced, forwardly extending, upper edge ledges 20, 2! fitting between the contiguous fronts 6 of the vertical rows and supporting the upper fronts of the vertical pairs.

An internally threaded sleeve 22 extends forwardly from the center of the base plate I between the contiguous corners of the fronts ii, in the horizontal plane of the ledges 20, 2|, and is secured to said plate 1, for horizontal adjustment, as occasion may require, by a bolt 23 extended forwardly through a horizontal central slot 24 in said plate I, said bolt 23 being threaded into one end of said sleeve 22. As will be clear, the bolt 23 is adjustable in the slot E i horizontally, to correspondingly adjust the sleeve 22, as may be found necessary in attachin the fastener and the fronts 6.

A pair of upper and lower wire springs 23', 24, respectively, are fastened, as presently described, in the base plate 1 above and below the plane of the ledges 20, 2| to extend horizontally over and under said ledges and forwardly from said plate and bear against the rear faces of the upper and lower fronts 6 of the vertical pairs. For fastening the springs 23', 24, the same are provided with centra1 horizontal bends, as shown in dotted lines at 25, 26 in Figure 2, in the rear of the base plate 7 and from which said springs are extended forwardly through suitable apertures, as at 21, in said plate 7.

A headed clamping screw 28 extends between the contiguous corners of the fronts 5 into the front end of the sleeve 22 with a rosette knob 22 thereon bearing against the front face of the fronts 6 at said corners and whereby said fronts 6 are clamped between said knob and the springs 23', 24' with the faces of said fronts in a common vertical plane at the front thereof.

The foregoing will, it is believed, suffice to impart a clear understanding of our invention, without further explanation, since the manner in which the fastener is applied and operates has been set forth in conjunction with the description of parts.

Manifestly, the invention, as described, is sus- 7 ceptible of modification, without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claim.

Having described the claimed as new is:

A fastener for securing to the wall of a crypt contiguous corners of front closure slabs arranged in vertical pairs, said fastener comprising a base plate attachable to the crypt behind said slabs and having a pair of horizontal coplanar and spaced apart ledges adapted to be interposed between the slabs of the vertical pairs, said plate having a horizontally extending slot therein between said ledges, a pair of Wire invention, what is springs on said plate adapted. to bear against the rear faces of said slabs, a sleeve adapted to be interposed between said corners of the slabs, a bolt carrying said sleeve and adjustable in said slot horizontally, and a screw threaded into said 20 sleeve and having a knob thereon engageable with the front faces of said slabs at said corners by turning of said screw into said sleeve and whereby said springs and knob are adapted to clamp said slabs in place with the front faces in a common plane, said springs havin central bends in the rear of the plate and from which said springs extend forwardly through the plate and horizontally to opposite sides of the plate, above and below said slot and from opposite ends of said slot to obviate interference with adjustment of said bolt in said slot.
