V UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE 0. HOW, OF HAVERHILL, MASSACHUSETTS.
BUTTON-BOOT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 262,594, dated August 15, 1882.
Application filed June 26,1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it'known that I, GEORGE G. How, of Haverhili, in the county of Essex, of theState of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Button-Boots; and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a side view, and Fig. 2 a transverse section, of a button-boot of my improved kind, the nature of the invention being defined in the claim hereinafter set forth. Fig. 3 is a side view of the buttoning implement.
In buttoning a button-boot the wearer or an attendant usually uses what is termed a buttoninghook, which, after having been inserted in a button-hole of the boot and hooked or caught upon a button,is pulled on so as to draw the button through the hole.
The object of my invention is to have the buttoning implement readily accessible when wanted for use, and for such purpose I make the leg portion of the upper of the buttonwi th ppckeLarr-anged in it in the rear part of ongofltslquarters, and close to and alongside of the back seam uniting the two quarters, such pocket, when' the boot is in wear, extending down in the hollow between the ankle and the tendon Achilles of the wearer. The pocket, open at its top, is to receive and hold the buttoning hook or implement, which, in view of the position of the pocket, will not render the boot uncomfortable to the tending'downward therein and opening at or ne ar its top. The mouth of the pocket may be either on the inner or the outer side of the pp 1. p I
The buttoning implement shownin Fig. 3 I prefer to a common buttoning-hook. The said implement has a buttoning-eye, b, which is wider than the part or shank 0 above it. To hold the implement in place, so as to prevent it from accidentally drawing out of the pocket, such pocket is to be constructed of an elastic material, or to be elastic and contractile at or near its middle, so as to expand while the buttoning implement is being forced down into it,
and subsequently contract on the said implement above the buttoning hook or eye thereof.
What I claim as my invention is as follows,
viz:
A button boot or shoe having in its leg portion an elastic or contractile pocket for receiving and holding a buttoning hook or implement, and to operate therewith, substantially as set forth.
GEORGE 0. HOW.
