Various types of boxes have been -prvzqposed in which the user merely presses on some parts =0: the box to *create a dispensing --'opening which will 'be closed when thispressure is released. For various reasons, noneo'f'the'se "has been-entirely satisfactory.
The primary object 1 of *the present invention is to provide a satisfactory and workable 'dispensing box of this type.
Another object of "the invention is "to provide a box of this type which *is inexpensive and E simple.
Still another object 0f 'the invention is to provide a box of this type which-ban be'iilled'and closed by standard .machinery.
A further objectof the-invention is to provide a box of-this type which'm'aintains the material tightly sealed within it during shipping and other zhandling, but which is very easily :opened by the user when materialis to be dispensed from it.
Still a further object of the invention llS to provide aboxof this type whic'his purely "rectangular, so that large numbers "of the boxes '"can be packed together'incartonsiorstocked on store shelves.
.An additional object of the invention .is 'to provide a'box of this type, in which a quadrilateral opening is formed along the top of one of the side panels, with means which ensure the proper folding of the parts to produce such an opening.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear more fully from the following description, especially when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings which a. part thereof.

Fig. 1 shows the top part of a box blank for assembly into a box embodying the invention;

Fig. 3 is a similar view of the box in use; and
Figs. 4 and 5 are cross-sections on the lines 44 and 5-5 respectively of Fig. 2.
The box according to the invention includes front and back panels I, 2 and side panels 4, 6, the latter cooperating with glue lap 8 to complete the box. Panels 2 and l have connected With them flaps l0 and 12, while side panels 4 and 6 have flaps I4 and [6 respectively. The

Indications, as at 34, may be provided on the front and rear panels I, 2 adjacent the top of the box, to show where pressure is to be applied to open the box. Of course, if a wrapper is to be applied to the box, these would be omitted from the box and would appear on the wrapper instead.
In assembling the box, the front and rear panels I, 2 are folded into parallel position and glue lap 8 is glued to the inside of side panel 6. The bottom of the box is formed in the usual way. In closing the top of the box, flaps l4 and it are folded down. Flap I0 is now folded down and adhesively secured to flaps l4 and I6 (except in the area 26) and flap I2 is folded down and adhesively secured to flap I0 (except in the area. 30).
When the material is to be used, the user presses at points 34 on the front and rear panels. This pressure causes the top of the box and the top of side panel 4 to fold along their lines of weakening, so that the perforated line 22 breaks 3 to form a quadrilateral opening 36 as shown in Fig. 3. The material may then be poured from the spout so formed.
It has been found that the provision of lines of weakening extending longitudinally of the top from a point at or near the upper edge of the side panel assists in the formation of a satisfactory spout. The use of lines of weakening, as at 24, 28, 32 in the flaps makes the breaking of line 22 easier and more accurate. 7
The proper operation is also assured by the lack of adhesion at surfaces 26, 30, which may be accomplished either by omitting adhesive over these areas or by printing them with a material which resists adhesion. Printing these areas with ordinary ink or paint such as used in printing is sufficient if a glue of sufficiently low viscosity is used and applied lightly on the flaps,
as is usual in standard package filling machines.
The application of varnish to these areas makes non-adhesion even more certain. Fig. 5 has been marked to indicate this condition, the areas of adhesion being indicated by crossed lines while the areas of non-adhesion are shown by small circles, along the meeting surfaces of the flaps.
The package so formed can be handled and shipped under normal conditions without danger of breaking open, yet it can be readily opened by the purchaser when the material is to be used.
While specific types of lines of weakening at different points have been described herein, it is to be understood that within the broader aspects of the invention other types might be used at such points, including scores, cut scores, perforations or cuts.
While we have described herein some embodiments of our invention, we wish it to be understood that we do not intend to limit ourselves thereby except within the scope of the claims hereto or hereinafter appended.
We claim:
l. A dispensing package comprising a box having front, back and side panels and having flaps at one end of each of the front and back panels and at least one of the side panels folded down to close the end of the box, a first line of severe weakening forming a tear line between the side panel and its flap, a second line of weakening extending longitudinally of the side panel from about the center of the first line, third and fourth lines of weakening extending angularly from the end of the second line remote from the first line to points adjacent the edges of the side panel, a fifth line of weakening in the side panel flap extending substantially in alignment with the second line, and sixth and seventh lines of weakening in the front and back panel flaps aligned with said fifth line, the side panel flap underlying the front and back panel fiaps, the line of weakening in the lower of the front and back panel flaps constituting a slit, said sixth and seventh lines terminating a short distance away from said tear line.
2. In a package as claimed in claim 1, said flaps being adhesively secured over substantial parts of their areas but being free of one another adjacent the lines of weakening therein.
3. A dispensing package comprising a box having front, back and side panels and having flaps at one end of each of the front and back panels and at least one of the side panels folded down to close the end of the box, a first line of severe weakening forming a tear line between the side panel and its flap, a second line of weakening extending longitudinally of the side panel from about the center of the first line, third and fourth lines of weakening extending angularly from the end of the second line remote from the first line to points adjacent the edges of the side panel, a fifth line of weakening in the side panel flap extending substantially in alignment with the second line, and sixth and seventh lines of weakening in the front and back panel flaps aligned with said fifth line, the side panel flap underlying the front and back panel flaps, the line of weakening in the lower of the front and back panel flaps constituting a slit, said flaps being adhesively secured over substantial parts of their areas but being free of one another adjacent the lines of weakening therein.
