1 NITED STATES PATENT riucE.
GEORGE A. FERGUSON AND ROBERT W. FERGUSON, OF DECATUR, ILL.
COFFIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 265,492, dated October 3, 1882,
Application filed February 1, 1882.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE A. FERGU- soN and ROBERT W. FERGUSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Decatur, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Goflins, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a device for operating the face-plate of coftins in conjunction with or separately from the glass, and will be understood as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
The accompanying drawings form a part of this specification and illustrate the invention.
Figure l is a longitudinal section of the coffin-lid and face-plate, showing my improved devices attached. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a portion of the coffin-lid and face-plate with the supporter attached. Fig. 3 is a plan of the supporter. Fig. 4 is a plan of the glass and frame or rim.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A is the coffin-lid. B is the face-plate, and G the glass. One end of the face-plate B is secured to the lid A by means of the supporter D, which is rigidly attached to the plate B, and provided with a slot, (1, in a curved extension, which extends over the edge of the plate B. The sides of the supporter D, lying on either side of the slot d, engage under the head of a screw, G, which is set in the lid A. WVhen the face-plate is over the opening a in the lid A the supporter D is pushed back under the head of the screw G until the end of the slot (1 nearest the plate B comes against the screw; but when the plate B is turned back to expose the opening a the other end of the slot (1 (farthest from the plate B) comes against the screw G, and the curved form of the extension of the supporter D, in which the slot d is made, will hold the plate in the elevated position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 when turned round. When the slot d is open at the outer end the arch e is made to unite the two limbs on either side of the slot. When the slot is thus open the plate may be entirely removed from the lid without taking the screw G out.
(ModeL) The plate B is provided with hooks 0 on its under side, near the end to which the supporter D is attached, which rest in the depression formed for the glass 0 in the lid A when the face-plate is down. This depression is made sufticiently larger than the glass for the hook to clear said glass when the plate is raised, unless it is pushed back. The front of the plate B is secured to the cofiin-lid by a turn-button, H,which is provided with a bevel, w, on the foot, which is turned to engage with a reverse bevel in the lid when it is desired to hold the plate down; but when the plate is to be raised the button H is turned until the bevel clears the lid, but does not come in contact with the glass 0. It the plate be raised while the button is in this condition, the glass (J will lie undisturbed over the opening a. If it is desired to raise the glass also, the button H is turned until the bevel 00 comes in contact with the glass (J and forces it back upon the hooks 0, when, if the plate is raised, the glass 0 will be raised with it. The bevel 00 serves as a support for the glass at the front by reason of the point of the bevel coming under the glass.
The glass 0 is provided with a rim or frame of some soft or elastic material in order to prevent breakage. VVe have found that a large flat rubber band stretched around the glass answers the purpose admirably. A plate, 3 may be placed on the lid A under the slot d.
Having thus described our invention, what.
we wish to claim and secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with a swinging faceplate, of the hooks 0, glass 0, and operating means H, as set forth.
2. The supporter described, having a portion adapted to be rigidly attached to a face-plate, and a curved extension provided with a slot adapted to engage with a screw or other holdin g means.
GEoEGE A. FERGUSON. ROBERT w. FERGUSON.
