Patented Oct. 20, 1953 UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE This invention relates to typewriter desks and in its more specific aspects is directed to an improved lock for holding the platform on which the typewriter rests in an elevated position.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a lock for the typewriter platform in a desk that will be easily operated, will respond to gravitational action for its operation and which can be released by a simple lever action thus permitting the platform to be raised or lowered in the customary manner.
Another object of the invention is to provide a spring operated lock for a typewriter desk platformthat secures the same to the desk frame when the platform is in its elevated position but which will respond to gravitational action for locking the platform in position in the event of failure of the spring.
. The invention consists in the provision of a lock for a typewriter desk platform which will lock the latter rigidly to the desk frame when it is in its elevated position and which is appliable either by a spring or gravitational action and which can Fig. 1 is a partial vertical section view through a typewriter desk showing the platform therefor in depressed position and disposed in the well Y of the desk;
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but with the platform in position just prior to vertical movement;
Fig. 3 is a. view similar to Fig. 2 but with the platform in locked elevated position;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the platform lock;
Fig. 5 is a partial sectional elevational view of the look as applied to the desk;
Fig, 6 is an enlarged section view of thelock in engaged position taken along the line fi6 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 7 is a section view taken along the line 1-1 of Fig. 3; and
Fig. 8 is a section view taken along the line 88 of Fig. 4.
This invention is an improvement on the disclosure in U. S. Patent No. 2,402,412 issued to the inventor hereof. This invention is embodied in a desk generally designated by the numeral I and is provided with a well 2 in which the typewriter platform 3 and its carriage are disposed. A door 5 normally closes the open end of the well 2 in the customary manner.
A track 6 for the carriage 4 is disposed in the well 2 and is secured to the side walls of the desk that form the well. Only one of the track rails is shown although there are two provided as is customary in the art, The complete details of the carriage are setforth in the aboveidentified patent. r
I The platform 3 is supported on each of the carriages by a pair of levers I one end of each being pivoted to the carriage on pins 8 disposed in substantially vertical alignment and the opposite ends of the levers are pivotally secured to a bracket 9, one being secured to each side of the plat-- form 3 by means of pins I0, these pins also being in substantial vertical alignment. A spring I I is disposed between a rod I2 connected between the carriages and a rod I3 connected between the lower of the levers I, the Spring acting as a counterbalance for the platform 3, and the typewriter thereon, when it is moved from lowered to elevated position. Each carriage has a lever I4 pivoted thereto having an arm I5 thereon that engages a notch I6 for holding the carriage 4 in position when it is in its outermost position as more fully set forth in the above identified patent. A spring II connected between the lever I4 and the carriage 4 holds the lever I4 and its extension or arm I5 in locked position when the carriage is withdrawn from the well 2.
Each bracket 9 has an extension I8 thereon that is engaged by a rod I9 received in angularly disposed slots 20 in brackets 2| secured to the desk frame. The rod I9 slides down the slots 20 against extension I8 thereby locking the platform in position and rigidly to the desk. A spring 22 in addition to gravitational action normally urges the rod I9 doownwardly into positive engagement with the extension I8. The spring 22 is connected between rod I9 and a pin or screw in brackets 2I. A lever 23 pivotally secured to the platform 3 may be depressed for releasing the rod I9 from the extension I8. This lever lifts the rod upwardly in the slot and away from the extension I8. Should spring 22 fail gravitational action will cause it to engage said extension I8 and if so, it is released in the same manner as when spring operated.
That which is regarded as new, novel and useful and which is sought to be protected by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
1. A typewriter desk comprising a frame; a carriage longitudinally movable in said frame between innermost and outermost positions relative to the desk; a platform having brackets thereon, each bracket provided with an extension; means extending between said carriage and said brackets for permitting said platform to move substantially vertically to an elevated position when withdrawn from said frame; a locking member for securing said carriage relative to said frame in said outermost position; a locking bar supported by said frame and adapted to engage said extensions in said outermost position of said carriage for locking said platform to said frame in said elevated position; a spring for holding said bar in looking engagement with said extensions; and a lever mounted on said platform for releasing said locking bar from said extensions thereby permitting said platform to move substantially vertically.
2. A typewriter desk comprising a frame; a carriage movable in said frame between innermost and outermost positions relative to the desk; a platform having brackets thereon, each bracket provided With an extension; means extending between said carriage and said brackets for permitting said platform to move substantially vertically to an elevated position when withdrawn from said frame; a locking member for securing said carriage relative to said frame in said outermost position; a locking bar supported by said frame and adapted to be engaged by said extensions in said outermost position of said carriage for locking said platform to said frame in said elevated position and locked against said extensions by gravitational action; and a lever mounted on said platform for releasing said locking bar from said extensions thereby permitting said platform to move substantially vertically.
3. A typewriter desk comprising a frame; a carriag movably supported in said frame and having an outermost position relative to the desk; releasable means on said carriage for holding said carriage in said outermost position; a platform; means for pivotally securing said platform tosaid carriage, said platform moving between lowered and elevated positions relative to said carriage; a locking bar having a length substantially equal to the Width of said platform; means mounted on said frame receiving said bar and permitting. it to move by gravitational action toward the platform; means mounted on said platform and located, when. said platform is in said elevated position, to be engaged by said bar for locking the platform to the frame cooperation with said releasable means; and a manually a actuated. lever pivotally supported on said. platform engageable with said locking bar and adapted to lift the bar from the platform mounted means to thereby release the locking engagement of said bar from the platform mounted means.
4. A typewriter desk comprising a frame and having an outermost position relative to the desk; releasable means on said carriage for holding said carriage in said outermost position; a carriage movable in said frame; a platform; means for pivoting said. platform. to said. carriage for movement to an elevated position in the outermost position of said carriage, said means including brackets having extensions thereon movable into exposed positions upon pivoting of said platform to said elevated position; a locking bar mounted on said frame for movement toward and away from said exposed extensions for engagement therewith; a spring for moving said bar into contact with said extensions for locking the platform to said frame; and manually actuated lever means on said platform adapted for disengaging said locking bar from said extensions to release said platform from said frame for movement out of said elevated position.
