SANITARY GARMENT FiledFeb. 11, 1955 FIGZ.
Patented May 18, 1954 UNITED "STAT This invention relates to sanitary garments, and more particularly to a sanitary garment of the panty type for being worn with a sanitary napkin.
Among the several objects of the invention may be noted the provision of a sanitary garment of the panty type having improved means associated therewith for holding a sanitary napkin; the provision of a sanitary garment of this class having fasteners for attachment to the ends of a sanitary napkin associated with the garment in such manner as substantially to eliminate stress upon the fabric of the garment when the garment is worn, and thereby avoiding tearing of the fabric; the provision of a sanitary napkin of this class in which the fasteners are securely attached to the garment and not prone to be pulled out; and the provision of a sanitary garment of this class which is economical to manufacture. Among the various significant features of the invention may be noted the provision of the panty having a waistband, an impervious crotch section, and narrow fabric tapes in the front and back caught at their upper ends in the waistband seam and extending to the crotch section, the tapes having sanitary napkin fasteners attached thereto at their lower ends for holding a sanitary napkin in place in the crotch section. Other objects and features will be in part apparent and in part pointed. out hereinafter.
The invention accordingly comprises the constructions hereinafter described, the scope of the invention being indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawings, in which one of various possible embodiments of the invention is illustrated,
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a sanitary garment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged section taken substan tially on line 22 of Fig. 1; r
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of Fig. 1; and,
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary section taken substantially on line 4-4 of Fig. 2 and on the scale of Fig. 1.
Corresponding reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, a sanitary panty garment of my invention is shown to comprise a body portion l of thin fabric material, which may be any conventional knitted fabric such as is widely used for panty garments, for example rayon or nylon. The body portion consists of front and back sections 3 and 5 joined at stitched side seams 1. An elastic waistband 9 encircles the waist of the body portion, which is puckered, and is stitched to the waist by the seam indicated at H. The garment has a one-piece crotch sec- 5 Claims. (Cl. 128-288) tion l3 of flexible, impervious, waterproof material, preferably a coated fabric such as commercially available rayon coated on one side with a plastic, seamed by stitching along its front and back margins throughout their extent to the front and back body sections as indicated at E5 and H, respectively. When plastic-coated fabric is used for the crotch section, the plastic-coated side is preferably on the inside. The body portion and crotch section are cut to provide leg openings 19, and elastic bands 21 encircle the le openings, being stitched to the puckered margins of the body portion and the Side margins of the crotch section which extend along the leg openings as indicated at 23. The front and back margins of the crotch section extend from one leg opening to the other.
On the inside of the front section of the body portion is a narrow substantially non-stretchable fabric tape 25 extending generally centrally from the waist to and terminating at the center of the front margin of the crotch section and caught at its upper end in the waistband seam H and at its lower end in the front crotch section seam iii. The tape 25 is stitched along its side margins to the front body section as indicated at 21. On the inside of the back section of the body portion is a similar tape 29 extending centrally from the waist to and terminating at the center of the back margin of the crotch section and caught at its upper end in the waistband seam H and at its lower end in the back crotch seam ii. The tape 29 is stitched along its side margins to the back body section as indicated at 3!. Attached to each tape at its lower end is a sanitary napkin fastener 33 of any suitable type, and preferably (as illustrated) of the type shown in U. S. Patent D. 144,290 having an end opening 35 receiving stitching 3! attaching it to the tape just above the crotch section seam. The fasteners extend over the ends of the crotch section.
In use, a sanitary napkin (not shown in the drawings) is gripped at its ends by the fasteners 33 in position on the inside of the protective impervious crotch section l3. Strain transmitted from the napkin to the fasteners is taken by the tapes 25 and 29, rather than by the thin fabric of the body portion of the garment, and transmitted by the tapes to the waistband 9 via the securement of the upper ends of the tapes in the waistband seam H. Thus, the thin fabric of the body portion of the garment is entirely relieved of strain resulting from the wearing of the garment with a napkin, and any ripping or tearing of the garment such as otherwise might occur is precluded. Also, the securement of thenapkin fasteners to the tapes rather than to the thin fabric of thegarment results in a strong attachment preeluding ripping out of the fasteners. Also, the tapes reinforce the seams between the crotch section and the body section to preclude ripping of the seams.
In view of the above, it will be seen that the several objects of the invention are achieved and other advaritagebusresiilts attained.
As variouschan'ges'c'ould be made in the above constructions without departing from the scope of the invention, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limitihgsnse.
