The essential feature of the present invention is best illustrated in Figures 2 and 3. The face viewable in Figures 2 and 3 is the top of the box as shown in Figure 2, this top of the box being substantially flat so as to facilitate stacking of a number of the boxes-one upon the other. The distortion which is shown in Figure 2 is substantially exaggerated when compared with that existing in the actual construction of the box. the distortion being resorted to for better illustration of the box construction. Tliaside -wal-l portion 10 is' provided' alongits free edge witha securing flap 27 which is adapted to overlie and be secured to the vertically extending free edge of the end wall portion 13 of the blank, thereby providing an open-ended rectangular box construction having parallel end walls 12 and 13 and parallel side walls 10 and 11, the side walls being respectively provided with the top and bottom closure flaps hereinbefore described. The end walls, in addition to the bottom closure flaps 16 and 17, are respectively provided at their upper edges with top closure flaps 28 and 29, Which are adapted to be folded into coplanar relation just beneath the overlapping top closure flaps 18 and 20, as is most clearly shown in Figure 1.
In the manufacture of this box the blank of Figure 6 is initially expanded into substantially rectangular condition'with the overlap 27 glued or otherwise secured to the inner face of the end Wall 13. Thebottom closure flaps 16 and 17 are then 'inturned and the half- bottoms 14 and 15 are then adhesively secured to these flaps 16 and 17, thereby forming a sealed bottom for the box. In this expanded condition of the box, its top is wide open and it is thus adapted to be filled with the goods which it is designed to receive, following which filling operation the top closure flaps 28 and 29, integral with the upper edges of the end walls 12 and 13, are folded over the contents of the box. At this point the handhold portion 19 is turned back upon the closure flap 18 along the scored line 30 and the bottom face of said flap 18 is adhesively secured to the underlying flaps 28 and 29. The box is now in the condition shown in Figure 1 of the drawings.
Adhesive is now applied preferably to all of the bottom face of the closure flap 211 including the portions 2121 and 22 thereof, following which the flap 20 is pressed down and secured in position against the underlying surfaces of the flaps 28 and 29 and of the flap 18, which latter surfaces also may be adhesively coated as shown in Figure 1. The structure thus obtained is best illustrated in Figures 2 and 4 wherein it will be observed that the superimposed hand- hold portions 19 and 22 are adhesively secured together as a unit which is swingable out of the plane of the box top. This hand-hold unit formed of the eiernents 1.9 and 22 adhesively secured together is normally retained fiatwise in the plane of the top of the box by the readily separable connections 39-31) at the ends of the slits 2323 which separate the handhold portion 22 from the laterally spaced sections 21-21 of the top closure flap 20. Upon breaking open these connections 30-410, the hand-hold unit comprising the elements 1.9 and 20 is free to be swung upwardly about the score line 31 into the upright carrying position shown in Figures 3 and 5, the top of the box being then rnaintained in its sealed condition as shown.
It will be understood, of course, that the present invention is susceptible of various changes and modifications which may be made from time to time without departing from the general principles or real spirit of the invention, and it is accordingly intended to claim the same broadly as well as specifically as indicated by the appended claims.
What is claimed as new and useful is:
1. For a fiber board box having upright walls adapted to define a rectangular opening in the top of the box, a closure for said opening comprising a pair of opposed flaps integral respectively with a pair of said upright walls and positioned over said rectangular opening, and another pair of opposed flaps integral respectively with the remaining pair of said upright walls and positioned in overlapping relation to one another and in overlying relation to said first mentioned pair of flaps, one of said overlapping flaps being provided with an integral central extension in the form of a handle-forming part folded back upon said one flap, the other of said overlapping flaps being provided with laterally spaced flap portions which flank and are detachably secured to the outer corners of a central portion in the form of a second handle-forming part, said laterally spaced flap portions being disposed in coplanar relation to said first mentioned handle-forming part, the latter being disposed in underlying relation to said second handle-forming part, said laterally spaced flap portions being adhesively secured to the underlying flap, and said handle-forming parts being adhesively secured together and swingable as a unit out of the plane of the box top into position Number normal to said plane after detachment of said second handle-forming part from said laterally spaced flap portions, and being providedwith registering apertures to form a hand-l1ole.
2. For a fiber board box having upright walls adapted to define a rectangular opening in the top of the box, a closure for said opening comprising a pair of opposed flaps integral respectively with a pair of said upright walis and positioned over said rectangular opening, and another pair of opposed flaps integral respectively with the remaining pair of said upright walls and positioned in overlapping relation to one another and in overlying reiation to said first mentioned pair of flaps, one of said overlapping flaps being provided with an integral handleforming part folded back upon said one flap, the other of said overlapping flaps being provided with laterally spaced flap portions which flank and are detachably secured to a central portion in the form of a second handleforming part, said laterally spaced flap portions being disposed in coplanar relation to said first mentioned handie-forming part, the latter being disposed in underlying relation to said second handle-forming part, said laterally spaced flap portions being adhesively secured to the underlying flap, and said handle-forming parts being adhesively secured together and swingable as a unit out of the plane of the box top into position normal to said plane after detachment of said second handle-forining part from said laterally spaced flap portions.
3. For a fiber board box having a rectangular opening in the top thereof, a closure for said opening comprising a pair of opposed flaps positioned over said rectangular opening, and another pair of opposed flaps positioned in overlapping relation to one another and in overlying relation to said first mentioned pair of flaps, one of said overlapping flaps being provided with an integral handle-forming part folded back upon said one flap, the other of said overlapping flaps being provided with laterally spaced flap portions which flank and are detachably secured to a second handle-forming part, said laterally spaced flap portions being disposed in coplanar relation to said first mentioned handle-forming part, the latter being disposed in underlying relation to said second handle-forming part, said laterally spaced flap portions being adhesively secured to the underlying flap, and said handle-forming parts being adhesively secured together and swingable as a unit out of the plane of the box top into position normal to said plane after detachment of said second handle-forming part from said laterally spaced flap portions.
