Description

Nov. 30, 1954 MHCGREGOR 2,695,613
CARPULE AND NEEDLE ATTACHING MOUNT THEREFOR Filed Feb 16. 1953 United States Patent CARPULE AND NEEDLE ATTACHIN G MOUNT THEREFOR John MacGregor, Needham, Mass,
Instrument Company, of Massachusetts assignor to MacGregor Needham, Mass., a corporation This invention relates to needle mounts for attachment to a body such as a carpule and to bodies for use therewith. In order that the contents of a carpule may be injected, 1t is necessary that a needle be securely attached thereto with the seal at its distal and punctured thereby. The seal at the other end of the carpule is adapted to function as a plunger when an operating stem is secured thereto.
The principal object of this invention is to provide both a mount enabling a needle to be easily secured to or removed from a carpule and a carpule adapted to enable such a mount to be firmly anchored in position. In accordance with the invention, three general objectives are attained by means of a mount which has a needle carrying hub and a pair of opposed body gripping arms at least one of which has an inwardly disposed catch engageable with a shoulder with which the body is formed.
In the accompanying drawings, there is shown an illustrative embodiment of the invention from which these and other of its objectives, novel features and advantages will be readily apparent.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a view of the needle mount showing one of its arms in elevation,
Fig. 2 is a view of that of its arms,
Fig. 3 is a view of the needle mount from its carpule receiving end,
Fig. 4 is an elevational view of a carpule in accordance with the invention, and
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section through the carpule and needle mount.
A carpule in accordance with the invention consists of a substantially cylindrical body closed at its distal end by a seal 11 and adjacent its bellshaped end 12 by a seal 13.
The seal 13 is shown as having annular sealing grooves 14 and a socket 15 to detachably receive the ball-shaped extention 16 of the operating stem 17. When the stem 17 is thus attached to the seal 13, the seal becomes the plunger by which the carpule contents may be injected In order that the carpule may be used as a syringe, a needle such as the double-ended needle 18 must be securely anchored thereto as by means of the needle mount, generally indicated at 19. The needle mount 19 includes an end 20 engageable with the distal end of the carpule and formed with a hub 21 in which the needle 18 is secured. Integral arms 22 are disposed to frictionally engage with opposite side portions of the carpule and for that reason they are concave so that the carpule is securely positioned thereby. One and preferably both of the arms 22 is formed with an inwardly disposed tab 23, thus to provide a resilient catch engageable with the shoulder established by an annular groove 24 in the carpule body 10.
In order to assure the effective gripping of the carpule by the needle mount, the needle mount 19 is shown as having outwardly disposed U-shaped portions 25 defining the junction between the end 20 and the arms 22 mount positioned to show both and establishing digitally engageable flanges of utility in handling the assembled needle mount and carpule in use and in attaching and removing the needle mount.
What I therefore claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A needle mount for one end of a body having a locking shoulder, said mount comprising an end engageable With one end of said body and including a needle supporting hub and a pair of substantially parallel opposed resilient arms disposed and dimensioned to frictionally engage with opposite sides of said body through a substantial length thereof, at least one of said arms including an inwardly disposed yieldable catch engageable with said shoulder when said mount end is seated against said body end.
2. A needle mount for one end of a cylindrical body having a locking shoulder, said mount comprising an end engageable with one end of said body and including a needle supporing hub and a pair of substantially parallel opposed resilient arms of concave section disposed and dimensioned to frictionally engage with opposite sides of said body through a substantial length thereof, at least one of said arms including an inwardly disposed yieldable catch engageable with said shoulder when said mount end is seated against said body end.
3. A needle mount for one end of a cylindrical body having an annular locking shoulder, said mount com prising an end engageable with one end of said body and including a needle supporting hub and a pair of substantially parallel opposed resilient arms of concave section disposed and dimensioned to frictionally engage with opposite sides of said body through a substantial length thereof, each arm including an inwardly disposed yieldable catch engageable with said shoulder when said mount end is seated against said body end.
4. A needle mount for one end of a cylindrical body having a locking shoulder, said mount comprising an end engageable with one end of said body and including a needle supporting hub and a pair ofsubstantially parallel opposed resilient arms of concave section disposed and dimensioned to frictionally engage with opposite sides of said body through a substantial length thereof, the junction of said end and arms projecting laterally with respect to said body to provide finger engaging flanges, each arm including an inwardly disposed yieldable catch engageable with said shoulder when said mount end is seated against said body end.
5. A needle mount for one end of a cylindrical body having a locking shoulder, said mount comprising an end engageable with one end of said body and including a needle supporting hub and a pair of substantially parallel opposed resilient arms of concave section disposed and dimensioned to frictionally engage with opposite sides of said body through a substantial length thereof, each arm including an inwardly disposed yieldable catch engageable with said shoulder when said mount end is seated against said body and the junction of said end arms projecting laterally with respect to said body to provide resilient flanges which, when flexed towards the hub, swing said arms to unseat the catches from said shoulder.
