Description

y 1955 c. RITTENHOUSE 2,708,224
MOUNTING FOR PORTABLE ELECTRIC TOOLS Filed May 28, 1952 20 INVENTOR.
CHARLES RITTENHOUSE.
ATTORNEX ited MUUNTHIQ- PQRTABLE E TQOLS 2 (Iiaims. (Ci. filt -52) This invention relates to portable electric tools and more particularly to means for securing the tool to a base or table in such a manner to support the tool. for bench work and also to permit easy removal of the tool for general portable work.
There are many occasions when it is desirable to have the tool supported in fixed relation to a bench or other support for such work as sawing or sharpening tools on a grinding wheel where the work is applied to the tool rather than the tool being applied to the work. With my improved mounting the portable tool can be converted to a fixed bench tool thereby greatly enhancing the use of the tool.
The object of my invention is to provide means for supporting the electric tool on a bench or support in a manner to firmly hold the tool and from which the tool can be easily removed without the aid of too-ls.
A further object is to provide holding means which also retains the switch in either open or closed position.
Further objects reside in the novel construction of parts.
My invention will be further readily understood from the following description and claims, and from the drawings, in which latter:
Fig. l is a side view if a portable electric tool with my improved mounting applied thereto.
Fig 2 is a detail section showing the clamp holding the switch in closed position.
Fig, 3 is a detail section showing the clamp holding the switch in open position.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the forward clamp.
Fig. 5 is an end view of the rear bracket.
My improved mounting is intended to be used to support an electric portable tool ii. provided with an end spindle T12 and a crossshaft 1.3 to which suitable tools can be attached such as saws, grinding wheels, etc. The tool is provided with a hand grip 14 in which a spring loaded switch 15 is pivoted as at 16 to ener ize the motor of the tool.
To mount the tool on a support 2i} I provide a U- shaped bracket 21 having the base provided with aperates Patent 0 tures 22 to receive suitable screws 23 for attaching the bracket to the support. The upper ends 24 of the bracket are provided with notches 25 and the tool with registering threaded apertures to receive wing screws 26 for supporting the rear end of the tool. After the rear end of the tool is mounted on its bracket, a bracket 27 is placed in position against the hand grip and secured to the support by means of screws 28. A U-shaped engaging clip 29 encompasses the hand grip and normally engages the lower portion of the switch 15. The clip extends around the hand grip and through apertures in the bracket 27. A plate 38 is secured to the ends of the U member and springs 31 are interposed on the rods between the bracket 27 and the plate 38 to hold the hand grip of the tool to the support. in this position the switch is in or? position. Upward pressure on the switch closes the switch and the U clip 29 snaps under the heel of the switch holding the switch in closed position and also maintaining the tool in firm relation to its suuport, as shown in Fig. 2. When it is desired to stop the motor, the plate 30 is pushed forward permitting the switch to snap open and the U clip 23 will rest on the switch as shown in Fig. 3.
To remove the tool from the support the U clip 29 is drawn forward to permit raising the hand grip out of its support. The wing screws 26 are loosened from the rear bracket and the tool is free of the support for use as a portable tool.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A mounting for supporting in a horizontal position a portable electric tool having a hand grip and a switch on the hand grip, a supporting base, a U bracket extending upwardly from said base, means for attaching the body of said tool to said bracket, a second bracket engaging the rear of the hand grip of said tool, and a spring loaded member extending through said second bracket engaging said switch for maintaining said switch in on or off position and retaining said tool on said supporting base.
2. A mounting for supportin in a horizontal position a portable electric tool having a forwardly extending hand grip and a switch on said hand grip, a supporting base, a U bracket extendin upwardly from said base, means for attaching said tool to said bracket, 21 second bracket engaging the rear of the hand grip of said tool, a U clip extending through said second bracket for encompassing said hand grip, springs for holding said clip in engagement with said hand grip and engaging said switch for maintaining said switch in on or off position and retaining said tool on said supporting base.
