Claims priority, application Great Britain March 22, 1951 1 Claim. (Cl. v15-446) This invention relates to brushes particularly intended for hairdressing purposes, though they may be used for other purposes, and it relates to that kind of such brushes which are provided with a perforated cleansing plate or member through which the bristles pass, the cleansing plate or member being adapted to be slid along the bristles for the purpose of removing loose hairs or other adherent material.
The object of this invention is to provide a brush which will incorporate a bristles cleansing medium which can be readily operated by the user, the brush being of substantially normal appearance, and without the employment of operating or locking mechanism.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of one form of the brush.
Figure 2 is a cross section at 22 and 22 in Figure 1 but showing also the thumb or finger notches for operating.
Figure 3 is a similar view to Figure 2 but showing the parts in their cleansing position.
As shown in the accompanying drawings the stock 1 and handle 2 are of substantially normal form and the tufts of bristles 3 are secured in the stock in normal manner. The cleansing plate 4 is preferably of the same shape and size as the stock and may be conveniently made of a rigid plastic material. This plate is provided with perforations 5 corresponding with the tufts oi bristles. The bristles used are of a stiff character such as nylon plastic and as is well known the free ends of bristles tend to spread in comparison with their secured or base portions which are necessarily tightly compressed in the holes in the stock. The diameter of the perforations 5 substantially corresponds with that of the holes in the stock so that the friction between the bristles and the cleansing plate is such that the plate will be firmly retained in the position shown in Figure 2 and will not move away from the stock when the brush is being used.
To facilitate the assembly of the plate over the bristles,
Patented May 24, 1955 the perforations 5 may be conically enlarged at their inner ends as at 6.
Thumb and finger recesses 7 are provided in the stock or in the cleansing plate to facilitate the separation of the plate and stock.
To prevent complete removal of the plate, i. e. beyond the position shown in Figure 3, four screws 8 are provided, the threads of which engage with the plate and to provide for the movement of the plate to the position shown in Figure 3, and to avoid excessive thickness of the stock cups 9 are fixed in the stock and which are engaged by the head 10 of the screws, the projecting parts of the cups entering recesses 11 in the plate.
To remove loose hairs or other foreign material the cleansing plate is advanced to the position shown in Figure 3 as by holding the stock in one hand and the plate in the other.
The invention may be applied to military type of brushes, i. e. by omitting the handle or the handle may be formed on the plate instead of the stock.
If so desired extension leaf or other springs or elastic may be provided between the plate and stock to automatically return the plate to its normal position after cleansing the bristles.
The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:
In a brush for hairdressing or similar purposes of the kind having a body, bristles secured in said body and a perforated cleansing plate, the provision of a stock, tufts of bristles secured in said stock, a perforated cleansing plate secured to said stock, said bristles projecting through said perforations, the end of each perforation which is adjacent the stock being enlarged to conical shape so as to facilitate assembly of the brush, the wall of each perforation engaging frictionally the base of the corresponding tuft whereby the perforated plate is retained against the stock, co-operating means being provided on the plate and stock whereby they may be separated by the user, screws engaging in said plate, openings in said stock, the heads of said screws engaging slidably in said openings, cups around the ends of said openings in which said heads engage when the plate is in its cleaning position, the ends of said cups projecting beyond the face of the stock and recesses in the plate adapted to receive the projecting ends of the said cups when said plate is in position against the stock.
