This invention relates to improvements in a knockdown display box and more particularly to a knockdown display box which is pilier-proof and which is suitable for visibly displaying expensive textile fabrics such as stockings or handkerchiefs.

One object of this invention is a knock-down display box formed from one single blank, which can be folded and manipulated to form a box'for containing and for visibly displaying a textile fabric with the displayed fabric secured between the folds `of the display box in such a manner that said fabric cannot be removed from the display box without damaging veither the fabric or the display box. The display box when assemled is so reinforced that it is too strong and rigid tto bend, fold or crumple, and too large to be conveniently concealed upon or about the person.

Another object is a pilier-proof Adisplay package.

Other objects wiil appear from the detailed description f which follows.

The blank 1G (Fig. 1) which is stamped from one piece of cardboard or corrugated or laminated kraft paper or the like of suitable weight and thickness, and which may be ame-proofed, consists essentially of two main adjoined sections, namely the fenestrated front section 20, and the back member or box bottom 40.

Attached to and forming a continuation of the` front section 20 are two side sections 21 and 22 and a back section 35. The side sections 21 and 22 are separated from the front section 20 by the converging scored lines ice 23 and 24, and the outermost side sections 29 and 36 are separated from the side sections 21 and 22 respectively bythe spaced parallel scored lines 27 and 28, which may be paired as at 25, 27 and 26, 28. Thus when side sections 21 and 22 are folded inwardly along the scored lines 23 and 24, and the outermost side sections 29 and 30 are folded outwardly and downwardly along the scored lines 27 and 28, or outwardly along the scored lines 25 and 26, and downwardly along the scored lines 27 and 28 when the scored `lines are paired, the channelled sides 51 and 52 (Figs. 2 and 4) are erected to partially construct the upstanding frame (compare Figs. 2 and 4).

The outermost side sections 29 and 30 are also provided with longitudinally extending liaps or tabs 33 and 34 which can be folded along the scored lines 31 and 32 respectively to provide means for keeping the channelled sides 5l and 52 in an erect position when the frame of the display package is completely formed (compare Figs. 2 and 3).

The back section 35 is separated from the fenestrated front section 20 by the scored line 36, and the outermost back ap 39 is separated from the back section 35 as by the scored line 38 or by a pair of spaced parallel scored lines 37 and 38, so that when the back section 35 is folded inwardly along the scored line 36, and the outermost back llap 39 is folded outwardly and downwardly along the scored iine 38, or outwardly along scored line 37 and then downwardly along the scored line 38 where paired score lines are provided, the channelled back frame 50 (Figs. 2 and 3) is erected to partially construct the upstanding frame.

The base or back member 40 enjoins and merges with the front section 2) either along the scored line 42, or along spaced parallel scored lines 41 and 42, so that when the blank lt is folded crosswise iirst downwardly and then inwardly along the scored line 42, or downwardly along scored line 42 and then inwardly along the scored line 41 if paired lines are used, it will register beneath the fenestrated front section 20 to form the back or bottom of the display package (compare Figs. 3 and 4).

The back or base member 40 is provided on its free side edges with side sections 45 and 46, and on its free end edge with end section 48, said sections being respectively separated from said back member 40 by the scored lines 43, 44 and 47. When each of the said sections 45, 46 and 48, is folded downwardly along its associated scored line 43, 44 or 47 respectively, and the blank 10 is Vfolded crosswise along the scored line 42 or along parallel scored lines 41 and 42 as previously described, the side sections 45 and 46, and the end section 48, register in the channels formed between folded sections 21 and 29, 22 and 30 yand 35 and 39, respectively (compare Figs. 2 and 3), and the longitudinally extending flaps or tabs 33 and 34 register in the channel formed between back section .35 and end section 4S (see Fig. 3) to complete the upstanding frame structure which encloses the fenestrated front section 20 upon three sides at 50, 51 and 52 (Fig. 2) to form the display box portion of the -display package. Side sections 45 and 46, and end section 48 are so proportioned that they do not engage the top of their respective formed channels (compare Figs. 3 and 4).

It will be seen that the upstanding frame thus consists of three frame members 5t), 51 and 52 (Fig. 2), and

that the side frame members Si. and 52 consist of three plies each, namely plies 21, 45 and 29 or plies 22, 46 and 30 (Fig. 4), and that the end frame member also consists of three long plies namely plies 35, 48 and 39 and the flaps or tabs 33 and 34 which are inserted between the plies 35 and 4S (Fig. 3).

The textile article 55 is displayed through the window opening 46'. The window opening may be artistically formed as with scallops 45', and is enclosed as by a sheet of cellophane 47 or other transparent nlm-like material secured to the inside ofthe window frame whereby a suicient portion of the article is visibly displayed, so that a prospective purchaser may examine the quality, brandmark, size, and any other data carried. by the textile article which may be visible through the cellophane window 47'. The window opening 46' extends through the fenestrated section and is large enough to clearly display the merchandise 'but small enough to leave a wide border around the cellophane window 47' which 'border is strong enough at all points to prevent the dis- -play package from being foldedor crumpled.

As best shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the marginal edges :of the kraft paper surrounding the opening 46' in `the fenestrated front section 20 and the back member 40, are drawn close together when the triple ply frame members 50, 51 and 52 are interlocked and are fastened as 'by rivets or wire staples 56, so that the fragile textile article '55, which may be a pair of silk or nylon stockings, is securely clamped by and between the peripheral marginal edges of the fenestrated front section 20 and the back member 40 in conjunction, so that if the cellophane window 47 is surreptitiously torn out the merchandise 55 cannot be removed through the opening 46 without tearing or otherwise rupturing the relatively fragile inerchandise 55 which is held stretched taut by the clamping Vaction effected by the marginal edges of fenestrated front section 20 and the back member 40 (compare Figs. 2, 3 and 4).

The scored'lines 23, 24 which define the side edges of the fenestrated front section 20, and the scored'line's y43, 44 which dene the side edges of the back member 40 are formed along oppositely converging lines (see kthe taper is so proportioned that the overall width of the package measured along frame 50 from the outside of frame 51 to the outside of frame 52 is less than the width of the opening between the side frame members Thus the display packages 10, 11 and 12 may be nested one inside the other as best shown in Fig. 5 to conserve storage space when the merchandise is in storage awaiting'shipment This is an important ladvantage especially in department stores -where storage space is frequently at 'a premium. Likewise'by nesting the packages 10, 11 and 12, etc., one inside the other (Fig. 5), when the Vdisplay packages are being prepared for shipment,` a substantial 'saving in shipping space can be made.

'In the modified form shown in Figs. 6 and 10, the display package 59 (Fig. 7) is completely framed in upon 'yall four sides Vof the fenestrated front section60. This Iresult is accomplished by so shaping the blank (Fig. '6),

and 78 (compare Figs. l and 6).

Front section 60 (Fig. 6) is provided with a window opening .98 which may be artistcally'shaped at 9.9 but 'so as to leave a mat of substantial 'width around the window opening 98. The window opening maybe covered by a cellophane window 100. the spaced pairs of parallel scored lines 65, 67 and 66, 68 if used, serve to mark off the outer flaps 69 and 70 from side sections 61 and 62. Scored lines 71, 72, 75 and 76 mark off the paired tabs 73, 74 and 77, 78 from the outer aps 69 and 70.

Back section 79 is marked off Vby a scored line 80, and either the scored line 82 or the spaced parallel scored lines 81 and 82 if both Yare used mark off back fold 83 from back section 79. `Inner central section 84 is marked off from front section 60 by scored line 85, and either the scored-lines 87 and 90 or the pairs of spaced parallel scored lines 86, 87 and 89, 90 if paired scored lines are used, mark off outer central section 88 from inner central section 84 and from the base member 91. Base member 91 is provided with two side sections 92, 93 and an end section 96, and the said sections are marked oi by fthe scored lines94,95 and 97 respectively. 'To effect correct 'registry of the several plies-wheniolded, sections 92 and93 are bevelled at 102 and 103 respectively.

The tabs73,74^enter the channel formed between back section .79 and end section 96, and the tabs 77, 78 enter the channel formed between inner and outer central'sections 84-and 88 (compare Figs. 7 and 8). The pairs of rivets or wireistaples 101, 101 are fastened through all three plies of the side frame members, and through all four plies of the front and back frame mem- Abers to inter-brace said members and completely as- .semble the frame-andfclose the display package.

During the folding operation the merchandise 55 is inserted in the boxso that when the folding operation is entirely completed and the rivets or staples 101, 101 are fastened in place, the merchandise 55 is eifectively clamped betwcenthe front section 60 and the base member 91 around the entire peripheral marginal edge of themerchandise, so that while the merchandise 55 is effectively -visibly displayed through the cellophane window 100, it

can not be removedeventhough the cellophane Window is `itorn open, and the package is too rugged to be folded or crumpled, and is much too large to be con- Aveniently concealed upon the person.

The frame is bevelled to enable the display packages to nest one Vabove another Fig. 1'0 to conserve -storage and. shipping space.

While as shown in the drawings the crease lines between 'the lfenestrated front sections of the blanks and their respective 'side and back sections, vand the crease lines between said I"fenestratc-:d front sections and the bottom members, are 'indicated las pairedscored lines, it yshould 'be understood that each of said crease lines may consist of one scored line only rather than a pair of parallel -scored lines.

`To those skilled inthe art the disclosure of my application will suggest other modifications and variations of my ing frame members, said front section being spaced slightly from said rear section and in overlying relation thereto, material to be displayed being disposed between said front and rear sections and substantially filling the space therebetween, a transparent window in said front section for receiving a portion of said material, said upstanding frame members of said front and rear sections being interlocked, said material being clampingly engaged by said front and rear sections.

2. The display package of claim 1, wherein said upstanding frame members of said front section include reversely folded portions, said upstanding frame members of said rear section being disposed within the confines of the upstanding frame members of said front section.

3. The display package of claim 1, wherein said front and rear sections have at least one pair of integral upstanding frame members. Y

4. The display package of claim 1, wherein certain of said frame members of one of said front and rear sections include reversely folded portions, certain of said frame members of the other of said sections being disposed within confines of said certain frame members of said one section, said front and rear sections have at least one pair of integral frame members.

A display package comprising a rear section having upstanding free members, a front section having upstanding frame members, said front `section being spaced slightly from said rear section and in overlying relation thereto, material to be displayed being disposed between said front and rear sections and substantially filling the space therebetween, a transparent window in said front section for receiving a portion of said material, said upstanding frame members of said front and rear sections being interlocked, said material being clampingly engaged by said front and rear sections, said window being of a size to resist passage of said material therethrough.

A pilfer-proof display package comprising a single sheet of material folded intermediate its ends to form overlying front and rear sections, said front section having opposite side edges and a free end, upstanding frame members along said side edges and free end, said rear section having opposite side edges and a free end, upstanding frame members along said side edges and free end of said rear section, said frame members of said front and rear sections being interlocked, said front and rear sections being slightly vertically spaced, material to be displayed disposed between said front and rear sections, a transparent window in said front section, said material underlying said window and being clampingly engaged by said front and rear sections.
