1 Claim. (Cl. 4-191) This invention relates to a domestic appliance and more particularly to a drain assembly for a sink and dishwasher.

One of the expenses in getting a dishwasher is the cost of the plumbing required to connect the dishwasher to the drain.

it is an object of my invention to provide a drain connection for a dishwasher which may be a part of the drain connection for a sink.

It is another object of my invention to provide a drain assembly for a sink having a lateral connection through which there may be discharged into the drain assembly the liquid discharged from another appliance and which prevents the flooding of the sink by such liquid.

These objects are attained in the form shown by providing a funnel-shaped drain connected to the outlet of the sink. Surrounding this funnel-shaped drain is an enclosed chamber having outlets in the bottom. The dishwasher or other appliance connects into this surrounding chamber. Both the funnel and the outlets to this chamber discharge into a coupling connected to the drain.

Further objects and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing wherein a preferred form of the invention is clearly shown.

Referring now to the drawing, there is shown the outlet portion 20 of a conventional sink having a flanged outlet opening 22. This flanged outlet opening 22 is provided with a gasket seal ring 24 of a rubber-like material. Resting upon this seal ring 24 is an outwardly extending flange 26 of a funnel-shaped member 28 having an upper cupshaped portion 30 and a lower outlet pipe 32. This funnelshaped member 28 may be provided with a combined strainer and closure member 34 including a flanged strainer cup having a plurality of openings 36 and a stopper 38 adapted to fit the outlet of the cup-shaped portion 30 as shown in Figure 1 to close the drain opening.

The cup-shaped portion 30 is provided with four inwardly extending projections 40 located 90 apart near the upper portion of the cup 30. The combined strainer and closure member 34 is provided with four notches 42 likewise spaced 90 apart so that they will receive the projections 40 as shown in Figure 1 to allow the stopper 38 to close the mouth of the outlet pipe 32. However, when the combined strainer and plug 34 is lifted by its knob 44 it may be turned so that its rim 46 rests on top of the projections 40. This will raise the plug 38 up above the outlet of the pipe 32 so as to allow liquids to flow through the combined strainer and plug 34 into the outlet pipe 32.

Surrounding the funnel-shaped member 28 is a flat bottomed cup-shaped member 50 having an outwardly extending flange 52 forming an upper rim. The member 50 includes a cylindrical sleeve portion and a perforated nitcd States Patent 2,739,317 Patented Mar. 27, 1956 fiat bottom. Above this rim 52 is a sealing gasket 54 of rubber-like material. The bottom of this cup-shaped member is provided with a centrally located opening 56 and other openings 58 surrounding the central opening 56. Between the openings 58 are connecting webs which connect the side walls of the cup-shaped member 50 with the bottom portion immediately surrounding the central opening 56.

Beneath the opening 56 there is provided a nut 61 which is threaded onto the threaded lower portion 62 of the outlet pipe 32. The threading of the nut 61 upon the threaded portion 62 draws the funnel-shaped member 28 and the cup-shaped member 50 together. This causes the flanges 26 and 52 to be drawn together thereby gripping the flanged opening 22 between the sealing rings 24 and 54 and between the flanges 26 and 52. This holds the drain assembly firmly in place.

To connect the dishwater to this drain assembly, there is provided a lateral extending pipe 60, the outlet end of which extends through an aperture in the side wall of the cup-shaped member 50. This pipe 60 is also sealed to the side wall and supported by the side wall. It extends down into the cup-shaped member 50 at an angle of about 30.

Sealed to the bottom of the cup-shaped member 50 on the outside of the openings 58 is an outwardly flanged coupling member 64 forming a continuation of the vertical wall of the sleeve portion of the cup member 50. The coupling member 64 has a threaded lower portion 66. Fastened to this threaded portion is a nut 68 which connects the threaded portion 66 to the drain pipe '70. This coupling includes a sealing ring 72 of a rubber-like mate rial which is located between the upper end of the drain pipe 70 and the lower end of the threaded portion 66.

The assembly is so arranged that water and liquid flowing at the maximum capacity of the pipe 60 may flow into the chamber 74 located between the cup-shaped member 50 and the funnel 28 as fast as the liquid can be carried by the pipe 60. The arrangement of the funnel 28 inside of the cup-shaped member 50 prevents this liquid from being forced into the sink. The outlet openings 58 restrict the flow out of the chamber 74 suiticiently that the capacity of the drain pipe 70 will not be exceeded. This arrangement also shields the drain opening so well that there can be no splashing of liquid back up into the sink. The funnel-shaped drain may be used when the dishwasher or other appliance is in operation or at any other time. Normally the dishwasher or other appliance will be connected by a hose to the pipe While the form of embodiment of the invention as herein disclosed constitutes a preferred form, it is to be understood that other forms might be adopted as may come within the scope of the claim which follows.

What is claimed is as follows:

A household sink provided with a drain opening, a funnel-shaped member including an upper outwardly extending flange overlying the edges of said opening and a collecting basin within said opening connecting with a pipe shaped outlet portion, a cup-shaped member having an upper outwardly extending flange immediately beneath the sink immediately surrounding the drain opening, a sleeve surrounding and being spaced from and extending below said collecting basin, and a lower perforated inwardly extending portion surrounding said pipe shaped outlet portion spaced a substantial distance beneath said collecting basin, a laterally extending pipe connecting into said sleeve above said inwardly extending portion, the
