Description

Feb. 19, 1957 J. v. T. EAST 2,732,035
GOLF CLUB WEIGHTING MEANS Filed March 8, 1954 IN VEN TOR. JAMES V- T. EAST ATTORNEY aided/9.
United States Patent GOLF CLUB WEIGHTING MEANS James V. T. East, Chicago, Ill., assignor to Fawick Flexi-Grip Company, a corporation of Ohio Application March 8, 1954, Serial No. 414,607
3 Claims. (Cl. 273-81) This invention relates to golf clubs and has to do with means for changing the weight of the structure in the upper end portion of the club to give the club the desired balance, or position of the center of gravity.
My chief objects are to provide an assembly comprising a weighting member easily mounted in relation to the rest of the structure,,providing an ornamental appearance, having durability and permanence of its positioning, and adapted to be readily modified to provide one or another of several increments of weight in being mounted in the club.
The single figure of the accompanying drawing is an elevation of an upper portion of a golf club embodying my invention in its preferred form.
The club, with the usual head, not shown, comprises a tubular steel shaft 10, upon which is mounted, and preferably adhered, a rubber grip 11 having an end wall 12 centrally formed with a hole of relatively large diameter for a distance inward from the outer face of the end wall and then stepped down to a smaller diameter for the rest of the distance inward through the end Wall, the end wall thus being formed with an internal flange defining the small-diameter part of the hole.
The said flange, preferably under slight strain, tits in a cross-sectionally rectangular, annular groove formed in a weighting member 13, of metal, plaster or other suitable material, the anchoring head of the weighting member thus being of waisted form. The portion of the weighting member outward from said groove snugly fits in and fills the large diameter part of the hole in the end wall of the grip, with its outer face a smooth continuation of the curved contour of the outer face of the grip.
Inwardly from the mentioned groove the Weighting member 13, of generally cylindrical form, is formed with a series of spaced apart break-off annular grooves 14, 15, 15, preferably of triangular cross-sectional shape as shown, and the innermost, terminal one of the sections defined by the grooves is similarly tapered at its inner end for easy insertion of the weighting member through the hole in the end wall of the grip.
2,782,035 Patented Feb. 19, 1957 When a lighter weighting member is desired it is obtained by breaking off and discarding one or more of the sections, according to the weight desired, and as the break will always occur at the bottom of the chosen groove 15 or 14 the remaining part of the weighting member, because of the shape of the break-off groove, will have a tapered inner end for easy insertion in the grip.
Because of the width and depth of the rectangular groove in the 'head portion of the weighting member, and the corresponding size and shape of the rubber flange occupying it, the weighting member, buttoned in the hole in the end wall of the grip, is securely and accurately held in place even when, as shown, it contacts only the rubber of the grip.
The assembly as described provides the advantages that are set out in the above statement of objects and is subject to modification without departure from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim? 1. A hand-grip weighting assembly comprising a hollow shaft formed with an open end, a rubber hand grip mounted thereon and having, as a closure for the said open end of the shaft, an outer end wall formed with a central hole through it, and a weighting member freely projecting from said end wall into the shaft and having an anchoring portion of waisted form buttoned into the said hole and held in position wholly by the resilience of the wall of said hole, the said weighting member thus being held out of contact with the inner face of the said shaft.
2. An assembly as defined in claim 1 in which the part of the weighting member inward from its waist portion is formed with at least one break-off groove spaced from the said Waist portion.
3. An assembly-as defined in claim '1 in which the part of the weighting memberinward from its waist portion is formed with at least one break-oil groove of inwardly tapered cross-sectional shape spaced from the said waist portion.
