This invention relates to the care of the human body including as to cleanliness, appearance and the like, and to equipment employed in such care, including apparatus used in cutting and removing hair.

The invention relates particularly to clippers of appropriate character and size for use in removing excess hair from the ears and nose, as well as to clippers electrically driven and capable of receiving their energy by being plugged into an electrical socket.

Visitations are made to barber and beauty shops to have unsightly and excess hair removed and sometimes the operator clips hair from the ears and nose. This usually is done with scissors having sharp points and rarely is this accomplished without the iniliction of pain or injury and causing the victim to fear again having such hair removed.

It is an object of the invention to provide a relatively simple and inexpensive device of few parts which can be readily handled, which is of suicient smallness that it can be inserted in the ears and nostrils to remove excess hair without likelihood of causing pain or injury, as well as a device of this character which can be readily assembled and taken apart and in which pressure between the cutter head and cutter can be varied to accommodate hair of different texture or coarseness as desired.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing wherein:

Briefly stated the invention comprises an elongated structure including a tubular cutter head having axial serrations providing spaced guard fingers at one reduced end and with the other end of said cutter head being internally threaded for reception of cooperating external threads on a tubular handle. Within the cutter head is mounted a rotary cutter having diametrically opposed axially disposed cutting blades nested within the guard fingers in order that the edges of the cutting blade pass the edges of the guard fingers and cut hair projecting therebetween.

The bore of the tubular handle is smaller than the bore of the cutter head in which the cutter is mounted and provides a shoulder against which the rear end of the cutter seats. The cutter has an axial projection or shank of reduced diameter extending into the bore of the handle and a bearing is located in the end of such bore and has a radial llange against which the rear end of the cutter rests.

.A exible cable is connected to the end of the shank of the cutter and is driven from its opposite end by an electric motor or other source of power, such exible cable being encased in a suitable housing.

With continued reference to the drawing, the clippers 'nited States Patent O ice of the present invention comprise a tubular cutter head 10 and an inner telescoped sleeve member or cutter 11. rIlhe cutter head i-s longitudinally serrated and terminates in spaced guard fingers 12 while the cutter has diametrically opposed cutter blades 13. The guard fingers 12 and cutter blades 13 are closely spaced between them, so that rotary movement of the cutter will readily cut or sever hair projecting through the lingers of the outer sleeve.

The outer fixed cutter head 10 is provided with an enlargement 14 along its rear portion and likewise is provided wit-h internal threads 15 and a set screw 16 so that it may be mounted and lsecured in lixed relation on a support or handle. The threads 15 are adapted tc he engaged with threads 17 on a handle 1S having an end 19 which forms a shoulder which serves to form a stop for lthe rear end of the cutter 11.

The spring press-ure between guard lingers 12 and cutter blades 13 is determined by the relative position of coacting threads 15 and 17 of the cutter head and handle respectively. To the end wall 20 of the cutter is connected an integral axial shank 21 having in its end an interna-lily threaded axial .opening 22 for engagement by external threads 23 lon a ilexible drive shaft 24 adapted to be operated lby any desired means as for example by a small electric mio-tor (not shown). The drive shaft may be encased in a housing 25 attached to a terminal knu-rled sleeve or nut 26 having external threads 27 by which it is engaged with external threads 2% on the handle 18. In order to reduce friction a sleeve 29 having a ange 30 may he provided and such sleeve may be of any desired material such as brass and may be fitted int-o -an opening 31 in the bore of the handle.

It will be apparent from the foregoing that a relatively simple, lightweight clipper is provided having an end of a size particularly suited to fit permitting it to be inserted into the ears and nose to remove surplus hair therefrom.

It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof and therefore the invention is not limited by that which is illustrated in the drawing and described in the specication, but only as indicated in the appended claims.

What is claimed is:

1. A clipper for hair in a relatively small opening such as in the ears and nose comprising opposed elongated members having axial serrations providing cooperating cutter and guard iinger members at least one of said members having tlexibility sufficient to allow said cutter and guard linger members to be maintained in contact under .spring pressure, and means whereby said spring pressure can be varied to accommodate hair of different textures.

2. A clipper of the character described comprising sleeves adapted to be disposed in telescopic relation one Within the other, said sleeves having free llexible end portions provided with axial serrations forming cutter fingers located on one end and guard lingers on the other end with said cutter and guard fingers located in cooperative relation and under spring pressure one relative to the other, and means whereby such spring pressure can be varied to accommodate hair of different textures.
