4 Claims. (Cl. 304-32) My invention relates to new and useful improvements in a scaffold clamp and has for its principal object the provision in a device of this character of a clamp for removably attaching the scaffold to its supporting bails.
Another object of my invention is in the provision in a device of this character of a scaffold clamp which is readily adaptable to mounting scaffolds of various sizes to supporting bails.
Yet another object of my invention is in the provision in a device of this character of a manually operated spring resisted latch for removably connecting the scaffold clamp to a scaffold and its supporting bails.
Still another object of my invention is in a device of this character that is simple in manufacture and yet highly efiicient.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings showing the preferred form of construction, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a scaffold and supporting bail and showing in dotted lines my improved clamp in an operative position;
Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my scaffold clamp and showing in dotted lines the spring resisted latch; and
Fig. 4is a detail sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
My improved scaffold clamp is primarily employed in mounting a free swinging stage or scaffold to metallic supporting bails.
Referring to Fig. 1, the scaffold is indicated as at 10. This scaffold is of a standard construction and as such has side rails 11, end rail 12, tread boards 13. Supporting the boards 13 and interposed between the side rails 11 are dowel supports 14.
The metallic bail 15 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 consists of oppositely disposed legs 16 and-a base 17 upon which the scaffold is placed. The bail is supported by suitable support ropes 18 there being one bail on each end of the scaffold 10.
A supporting arm 19 for carrying the guard rail 20 is fixedly attached to the bail 15 in any suitable manner.
It has been a practice to tie by a rope or the like the scaffold to the supporting bails to prevent displacement therefrom. Such a practice has proven unsatisfactory and at times very dangerous.
In order to overcome such known defects and to provide a safer and more convenient method of attaching a scaffold to the bails, I provide a clamp. Such clamp as shown in Fig. 3 has a block member 21 which has formed therein a curved recess 22. v
The top 23 of the block member 21 has a hollowed out portion 24 formed therein (Fig. 4). Positioned on United States Patent 0 ra c 2,8355%;
the top 23 of the block member 21 is a U-shaped plate 25. Positioned on top of this plate 25 is a hat plate 26 of substantially the same rectangular size as that of the top 23 of the block member 21 (Fig. 3). These plates 25 and 26 are fastened to the top 23 of the block mem ber 21 by screws 27 or the like.
A latch finger 28 of a thickness equal to that of the plate 25, is slidable over the top23 of the block member 21 between the legs of the U-shaped plate 25 as seen in Fig. 4. Thefree end of the finger 28 is provided with a gripping portion 29. The opposite end of the finger 28 has a depending lug 30 which depends downwardly into the hollowed out portion 24 formed in the top 23 of the member 21.
An expansion spring 31 is disposed in this portion 24 and has one end in engagement with the lug 30 so as to normally urge the latch finger 28 outwardly with respect to the plate 25 and block 21. I
The block member 21 has formed therein, so as to extend therethrough and to one side and parallel with respect to the recess 22, an aperture 32.
The top plate 26 has a like aperture 33 formed therein and which aperture 33, when the plate 26 is mounted on the top 23 of the block member 21, is adapted to be in vertical alignment with respect to the aperture 32 formed in the block 21.
The latch finger 28 has formed therein an elongated opening 34. This opening 34 is disposed in vertical alignment with respect to the apertures 32 and 33 of the top plate 26 and block member 21 respectively.
A clamp member consisting of a rod 35 having a hooked end 36, is provided to cooperate with the recess 22 formed in the block member 21 for clamping the scaffold 10 to a portion of the supporting bail 15 as viewed inFigs. 1 and 2. This clamping member 35 has an end journalled through the apertures 32 and 33 of the member 21 and top plate 26 respectively, and through the opening 34 of the latch finger 28. This end of the rod 35 is provided with a series of notches 37. These notches 37 are so disposed as to be selectively engaged by the latch finger 28 so as to latch the hooked end 36 in spaced relation to the block member 21 as viewed in Fig. 3.
The block member 21 is disposed between tread boards 13, with the recess 22 engaging the dowel 14.
' The hooked end 36 engages a portion of the supporting bail 15 and by engagement of the latch finger 28 with a selective notch 37 such bail 15 is clamped to the scaffold 10 as seen in Figssl and 2.
To release the clamp, the latch finger 28 is pressed inwardly of the block member 21 beneath the plate 26 and between the legsof the plate 25 against the compression of the spring 31 so as to disengage the edge of the opening 34 of the latch finger 28 from any of the notches 37. Thus the clamp member 35 may be disengaged from the block member 21 and the scaffold 10 released from the supporting bail 15.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention intoefiect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A clamp for securing a scaffold to a supporting bail comprising a clamp means having a hookedend portion engageable with a portion of said support bail, a block member having a recessed bottom portion for engaging Patented May 20,1958

2. The device as defined by claim 1 wherein said nun 10 means comprises a spring resisted latchv finger carried "by said block and adapted for latching connection with said' clamp member.
3. A clamp for securing a scaffold to a supportingbjail" comprising a clamp rod having a hooked'end. engagea- 15 ble with a portion of said supporting bail, a rectangular block member having a recessedbottom portion for, engaging within the recess a portion of said scaffold, said member having an aperture formed therein through 0 which a portion of said clamp rod extends, said rod having the said portion thereof which extends through the aperture of said member provided with a series of notches, latch means carried by said member, said latch means engageable withapreselected-notch o5- said-rod I so as to latch said hooked end of said rod in a spaced confronting relation with respect to the recessed bottom portion of said member so as to secure there between said scaflfold and said supporting bail.
4. The device as defined by claim 3 wherein said latch means comprises a springresisted latch finger carried by said block and adapted for latching connection with said clamp rod.
