Application September 16, 1955, Serial No. 534,753
1 Claim. (Cl. 215-11) This invention relates to the class of containers, and more particularly to improvements in nursing bottles.
The primary object of the present invention resides in the provision of a nursing bottle having means for retaining the nipple in the bottle while the nipple is not in use, while also preventing the fluid within the bottle from contacting the nipple.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a nursing bottle having a container secured to the sealed lower end thereof so that liquid or solids may be carried in conjunction with the bottle for use with the fluid carried in the bottle for feeding a baby.
The construction of this invention features a bottle having an open outer end on which is secured a flexible nipple when the fluid in the bottle is to be fed to a baby. When the bottle is not in use, the nipple may be removed, inverted, and fitted into the bead of a rigid cap which fits on the outer end of the bottle and has an inwardly extending rigid flange. A second rigid sealing cap is then fitted against the flange of the inverted nipple and completely encloses the nipple itself so as to seal the nipple from contact with the fluid in the bottle and from outside air.
Still further objects and features of this invention reside in the provision of a combined nursing bottle and food container which is simple in construction, sanitary, eflicient in use and relatively inexpensive to manufacture, thereby permitting wide use and distribution.
These, together with the various ancillary objects and features of the invention which will become apparent as the following description proceeds, are obtained by this nursing bottle, a preferred embodiment of which has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, by way of example only, wherein:
Figure l is an exploded elevational view of the nursing bottle comprising the present invention with parts thereof being broken away to show other parts in section;
Figure 2 is a top view of the bottle with the cap and nipple removed;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional detail view of the nursing bottle;
Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional detail view as taken along the plane of line 44 in Figure 3; and
Figure 5 is a sectional detail view illustrating the manner in which the nipple may be secured in the mouth of the bottle for nursing.
With continuing reference to the accompanying drawings wherein like reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views, reference numeral generally designates the nursing bottle comprising the present invention which includes a major container portion 12 having an open upper end or mouth 14. At the peripheral edge of the mouth or open end 14 are bayonet type threads 16. A flange 18 is formed in the neck portion 20 adjacent the open end 14. The lower end 24 of the container 12 is sealed and terminates in an extension 26 which is provided with bayonet type threads 28.
As can be seen best in Figures 3 and 5, the neck portion 20 of the container 12 is provided with internally Patented July 15, 1958 formed bayonet type threads 30 which cooperate with the bayonet type threads 32 formed on an insert 34 of a nipple 36 to enable the nipple 36 to be secured to the open end 14 of the bottle. The nipple 36 may be provided with any suitable perforations, as at 38, and has a rather thickened flange portion 40 adapted to bear against a flange 42 formed on the peripheral edge of an imperforate retainer cap 44 positioned against the outer edge of the open end 14. The flange 42 may be covered with any suitable gasket type or other suitable resilient plastic material 48 or the like.
The outer portion of the neck of the container 12 is also provided with bayonet type threads, as at 50, for reception of the threaded end 52 of a rigid closure cap 54 which is adapted to abut against the upper flange 56 of the nipple 36 to urge the nipple 36 into engagement with the flange 42 of the retainer cap 44, thus holding the retainer cap and the nipple in position with the nipple being shielded from the contents of the container 12.
An adapter 58 is threadedly secured to the threaded portions 28 of the open lower end of the container 12, and forms a seal for the lower end of the container 12, thus forming the sealed end thereof. A gasket 60 may be provided between the edge 62 of the container 12 and the web 64 of the adapter 58. The adapter 58 has threads 66 thereon opposed to the threads 68 thereof which are engaged in a threaded portion 70 of the neck 72 of a container 74 adapted to receive solid food, liquids or the like adapted to be utilized to provide nourishment in conjunction with the fluid contained in the container portion 12 and thereby supplement the fluid such as milk contained in the container 12. A gasket 74 similar to gasket 60 may be provided.
The outside of the bottle 12 as well as the container 74 has suitable serrations that may be used on one face to indicate the ounces of fluid in the bottle and on another face, the cubic centimeters of fluid. A third face may have the serial number on it, and a fourth face may have the name on it.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
In combination with a bottle having an open outer end having internal threads and external threads, and internally threaded rigid cap threaded upon the outer end of said bottle engaging said external threads, a flexible nipple having a flexible neck and a flexible flange portion, said nipple being adapted to fit within said rigid cap with the cap bearing against said flexible flange, said nipple having a rigid externally threaded insert adapted to be threadedly engaged with said internal threads, and an imperforate cap for sealing the nipple from the fluid in the bottle having a rigid laterally extending portion adapted to fit against the laterally extending portion of said nipple and adapted to be clamped between the flange portion of the nipple and the open outer end of the bottle.
