NITED STATES FF-E. I
PATENT BEDSTEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 284,617, dated September 11, 1883.
I Application filed January 29, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom) it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN A. DARi/IAN, of Gadsden, in the county of Etowah and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to beds and the like, and has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient bed-bottom and pillow that can be readily and conveniently applied to any bed-frame, and that will obviate the use of slats, mattresses, &c.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my invention in position on a bedframe. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 4. is a perspective view of the device rolled for transportation. Fig. 5
'is a transverse sectional view illustrating a modification.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the frame of a bed to which my invention is adapted to be applied. This frame can be of any suitable construction, and in case of emergency can be formed of forked sticks or logs of wood, and comprises in its construction side pieces, B B, and a head-piece, G.
D is my improved flexible bottom, which is adapted to be removably secured to the bedframe, and is formed of canvas, leather, wire, or any other suitable material. At the side edges of the bottom D are arranged longitudinal rods E E, which are adapted to be secured to the side pieces of the bed-frame to stretch the flexible bottom across the latter, these pieces E E being preferably secured to the side pieces, B B, by means of pins or bolts F, passing through perforations G in the piece E and through perforations II in the piece B, as shown. If desired, the bottom D can also be provided with bars or strips at its ends,
. which are preferably removable, and serve to strengthen and brace the said bottom. I is a flexible strip that is permanently secured transversely to the main bottom D, atits lower edge, J, and at a suitable point near the top end of the bottom D. Ihis strip I is provided at its free end with hooks K K, which are to be hooked up over the head-piece O, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, to secure the said strip I in inclined position, so that it will serve as a pillow. When the hooks are dis-' engaged from the head-piece O, the strip I can be laid down on the bottom D, and the whole device can be rolled up compactly for transportation.
Under some circumstances the bottom D can be placed on the bed-frame in reversed position, so that its pillow portion I can be placed over a removable frame of suitable construction and a leg-rest provided.
In the modification shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings the bottom D is formed of two pieces or sections, L L, so that it will be'double, and thetop piece is provided with a slit, M, through which the bottom can be filled with straw, leaves, or other material, as desired.
The advantages of my invention are obvious. It is very simple and inexpensive in construction, and can be conveniently transported from place to place and placed in position on any bed-frame.
I claim as my invention 1. The herein described device, arranged to be attached to a suitable frame, and comprising a flexible bottom having side rods or strips, by which it can be attached to and stretched on the said frame, and a transversely-secured flexible section arranged to be inclined at one end of the bottom, to serve as a pillow, as set forth.
2. The combination, with a frame of suitable construction, of the flexible bottom having the longitudinal side strips or rods securedor arranged at its edges, and provided with the transversely secured flexible pillow section having hooks secured at its free end, as set forth.
3. The combination of the bed-frame comprising the side and head pieces, the removable flexible bottom having the longitudinal rods or strips arranged at its side edges, and having the perforations through which a se curing-bolt is arranged tov be passed, and the flexible pillow-section, secured at its lower edge transversely to the bottom, near one end, and provided on its free edge with the hooks, arranged toengage the head-piece of the bedframe to support the pillow-piece in inclined position, as set forth.
JOHN ADAMS DARMAN.

D. E. HAMLIN.
