United States Patent TRASH BURNER COVER Clarence W. Ehlers, Junction City, Kans.
Application July 3, 1956, Serial No. 595,746
1 Claim. (Cl. 183-51) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in trash burners of the discarded metal barrel or drum type and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a foraminous, hinged safety cover or lid which may be expeditiously mounted on such burners for reducing the fire hazard.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide novel means for hingedly and removably mounting the safety cover or lid on the burner and for securing said cover or lid in closed position.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a trash burner cover of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable,
reliable in use and which may be manufactured at low cost.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing a cover embodying the present invention mounted on a trash burner;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view, taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the hinge structure, showing the parts separated; and,
Figure 4 is a detail view in perspective of the resilient latch.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a circular, substantially domeshaped foraminous cover or lid of suitable metal which is designated generally by reference character 5. The cover 5 is of a diameter to fit on top of a cylindrical trash burner 6 in the form of a discarded metallic barrel or drum.
The cover 5 includes a wire frame 7 comprising a ring 8 having mounted thereon crossed arcuate rods 9 and 10 comprising projecting end portions 11 and 12, respectively. A screen 13 of suitable mesh is mounted on the frame 7.
The cover 5 is pivotally and detachably mounted on the upper end or top of the burner 6 through the medium of a hinge 14. The hinge 14 comprises a metallic base or plate 15 which is adapted to rest on top of the burner 6 in a manner to project outwardly therefrom, said plate including an arcuate inner edge 16 which conforms to the curvature of said burner. Angle brackets 17 secure the plate 15 to the burner 6. Fixed on the plate 15 are hinge leaves 18 which are aligned with complemental leaves 19 which are mounted on the ring 8 of the frame "Ice 2 7. The aligned leaves 18 and 19 are for the reception of a removable pin or pintle 20. Rising from the outer edge of the plate 15 is a stop and support 21 for the cover 5.
Mounted on the upper portion of the burner 6 at a. point diametrically opposite the hinge 14 is a substantially U-shaped latch 22 of suitable resilient metal. The latch 22 comprises a bight portion 23 which is apertured, as indicated at 24, for the reception of bolts 25 for securing said latch in position on the burner 6. The latch 22 further includes a pair of opposed, angulated resilient jaws 26 for the reception of the projecting end portion 12 of the member 10 therebetween for releasably securing the cover 5 in closed position on the burner 6.
It is thought that the use of the device will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, to load the burner 6, the cover 5 is swung upwardly and brought to rest in a rearwardly inclined position against the stop 21. After the trash to be destroyed has been inserted in the burner 6, the cover 5 is swung downwardly to closed position where it is secured by the latch 22. To remove the cover for cleaning the burner 6 or for any other purpose, it is only necessary to withdraw the pin or pintle 20 from the aligned knuckles of the hinge leaves 18 and 19. The projecting end portions 11 and 12 of the frame 7 positively support the cover 5 on the upper end of the burner 6 even though said burner may be distorted or of a slightly larger diameter than said cover.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A trash burner attachment comprising a substantially dome-shaped foraminous removable cover including a wire frame and a circular screen mounted on said frame, said frame comprising a ring and crossed arcuate rods mounted on said ring, said rods including end portions projecting beyond the ring and engageable with the top of a trash burner for supporting the cover thereon, means for pivotally connecting the cover to the burner, means for releasably securing said cover in closed position on the burner, said first mentioned means including a plate adapted to be mounted horizontally on the burner, leaves including aligned knuckles on the medial portion of either side of said plate and on said ring, and a removable pin engaged in the aligned knuckles, said last mentioned means comprising a latch including a pair of opposed, resilient jaws for receiving and retaining therebetween one of said projecting end portions of said rods, a stop projecting upwardly from the rear edge of said plate whereby a stop is provided to limit the open position of said cover.
