Be it known that I, Cnnnrns H. Encin- Bnnoir, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alden, in the county of McHenry and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Device for Converting' Motion, of which the following is aspeciiioation, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to devices for converting motion, and it has for its object to change the reciprocating movement oi' a windmill-pump shaft int-o a continuous rotary motion. f
To this end it consists of a shaft journaled in the windmilltower and carrying gearwheels arranged to move in opposite directions, said gear-wheels engaging with a rack which is attached to the end of the pump-shaft of any ordinary windmill. Thesedevices connect with suitable machinery for shelling corn, churning, Src., and thus, when the rack is reciprocated by the movement ofthe pump-shaft, this movement will be transmitted to the gearwheels, which will convert it into a continuous rotary motion.
My invention consists in the above-described construction, and in certain other details, as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed ont in the claims. v

The rack or frame is formed at its upper and lower ends with extensions M, to the upper one of which is attached the pumping-shaft of any ordinary windmill, so that when the shaft is reciprocated a similar movement will be transmitted to the rack. As the rackdescends the gear-wheels D D are revolved and engage with the teeth L, the loose wheel I guiding the gear-Wheels in their movements. By the revolution of the gear-wheels, the blocks, with their pawls, are carried aroundinside the caps, the pawls G of wheel D being disengaged from the ratchet-teeth j of the cap II, so that said gear-wheel will revolve independently of shaft A without turning` its cap, while, the pawls G of the wheel D being engaged with the ratchet-teeth j, the cap H will be revolved, there- K gaged, and thus the cap II will not be opery tion are obvious.

This reciprocating movement is kept up,and will be converted into a continuous rotary motion, which will be imparted to the shaft A, the latter having at one end apulley, N, connecting by a belt,` 0, with the operating-shaft of a corn-shelling machine, churn, washing-machine, or any other suitable means.
The operation and advantages of my inven- The construction is simple and durable, and works with admirable efficiency in converting a reciprocating movement into a rotary motion.
. It will be obvious that various modifications may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention.
Having described my invention, I claim as newf 1. In a device for converting motion, ashaft journaled in the windmill-tower, and carrying two gear-wheels separatedby aloose wheel, I, iny combination with a rack or frame connected with the windmill-pump shaft at the upper end, said rack being provided with teeth on opposite sides, and a continuous track separating the teeth, the wheel I running on said track, for the purpose set forth.
2. In a device for converting motion, a shaft journaled/in the windmill-tower and `carrying two gear-wheels, between which works'a loose wheel, I,-and caps fitted over the outer ends of the gear-wheels and connecting with the same, in combination with a rack or frame connecting with the operating-shaft at the upper end, and provided with teeth on the inside, and a continuous track between the teeth, said rack rotating the gear-wheels in opposite directions. while the wheel I runs freely on the track, and means, substantially as described, for permitting the free rotation of one of the gear-wheels, while the other wheel turns its cap, and thereby imparts motion to the shaft, as set forth.
3. In a device for converting motion, the shafty C, connecting withthe machinery to be operated, and journaled in the windmill-tower, gear-wheels revolving loosely on the shaft, and provided with pawls on their outer faces, the pawls of one gear-wheel being engaged with its cap, while the pawls of the other wheel are disengaged with its cap, in combination' with a rack or frame connecting with the operating-shaft at the upper end, and provided with teeth on the inside, with which the gear-wheels mesh, as set forth.
4. The combination, with the gear-wheels, of circular plates having blocks secured to the back of the wheels, recesses cut from the blocks, pawls G G, fitted within the recesses, and circular caps fitting over the outer ends of the gear-wheels, arranged as shown, for the purpose set forth. 1
5. The combination, with the gear-wheels, of circular plates having blocks formed therewith and secured to the back of the gearwheels, recesses cut from the blocks, pawls G G, having round heads g g', which fit within `the recesses, and circular caps covering the whole and fitting over the outer ends of the gear-wheels, said caps being hollowed out in the insi e and formed with a circumferential series of teeth with which the pawls alternately engage and disengage, for the purpose set forth.
6. The combination, with the rack or frame connecting with the operating-shaft at the upper end, said rack being formed with a track, K, around the inside middle portion, and a series of teeth outside the track on opposite sides, of a lshaft journaled in the windmilltower, and connecting with the machinery to be driven, gear-wheels loosely mounted on said shaft, blocks formed on the back face of the IOO IIO
