United States Patent DISPLAY surronr The present invention relates to displays and, more particularly, to the display of post cards or the like upon a rack characterized by plastic support components modernistically and functionally designed to be inexpensive by virtue of a plastic shell construction yet rugged by virtue of a concealed reinforcing construction.
Primary objects of the present invention are: to provide, in a display of the foregoing type, a novel rack, for supporting postcards and the like, comprising a shell construction including a plurality of support tiers shaped from thin plastic and reinforced sequentially along a post by associated rigid components generally concealed by the shell construction; and to provide a support tier of the foregoing type in the form of an inverted dish of which at least the postcard supporting portions are integrally obvious and will in part appear hereinafter.
The invention accordingly comprises the product possessing the features, properties and relation of components,
which are exemplified in the following detailed disclosure and the scope of which will be indicated in the claims.
For a fuller understanding of the nature and objects of the invention, reference should be had to the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a rack embodying the present invention;
. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the rack of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a component of the rack of Fig. l;
Fig. 4 is a broken-away elevation of the rack of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the component of Fig. 3;
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary, sectional view of the rack of Fig. 1, illustrating the support of a stack of post cards thereon;
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a reinforcing component of the rack of Fig. l; and
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary elevation of a modification of the embodiment of Fig. 1.
Generally, the illustrated rack comprises five medial post card supporting tiers 20 of the same size, a base tier 22 of larger size, and a crown tier 24 for decorative and advertising purposes. All tiers as a unit are mounted on therethrough that is adapted to receive post 26 for the 2,886,184 Patented May 12,1959.
ICC
cross-sectional profile, of each dish 32 is characterized in succession by downwardly diverging wall 38, the horizontal bight 44 of channel 42,'the upwardly divergent outer wall 46 of channel 42, the horizontal upper shelf 47 .of sill 40 and a reversely turned, downwardly divergingrim 48. It. will be noted that the lower edge ofrim 48 extends below the lower face of bight 44. Rims 48 are joined ,to provide a continuousapron that helps to conceal the reinforcing constructionnow to 'be described. Extending integrally from the lower free edges of (rims 48 are tabs 49 upon which maybe secured tags-51 or the like, the inner faces of which are coated with a pressurewsensie tive adhesive 6 and the outer faces of which a are imprinted with prices or othersale s information. 1,; i i a A concealed reinforcing; construction, the components 1 of, which are composed of an inexpensive material such as cardboard, fibre board or the like, ;.enable;each tier to support the tiers above it and the stacks of post cards 53 upon it without deformation. This reinforcing construction includes: a horizontal rigid plate 50 upon which inverted dish 32 rests; and a vertical brace 52 extending between the horizontal plate and the base of the dish. Plate 50 has a central opening for rotatably receiving post 26 purpose of centering the dish for rotation about the post.
provide channels 42, continue outwardly from the lower edges of the walls. As best shown in Fig. 6, the medial and a periphery that conforms in shape to the lower edges of the apron constituted by rims 48. It will be observed that bights 44 of channel 42 rest upon the upper face of plate 50 at its outer edges and that the loweredges of rims 48 extend below the lower face of bight 44 a distance at least substantially as great as the thickness of plate 50 for the purpose of concealing the edges of plate from view.
Brace 52 is formed from a rigid cardboard blank folded,
to provide a hollow column about post 26. Dish 32, plate 50 and brace 52 are assembled simply by approximately centering the brace upon base 34 of the dish and fitting plate 50 into registration with the lower edges of rims 48 and into abutment against the lower faces of bights 44. Bights 44 and the corresponding portions of plate 50 are secured at 55, preferably by a pressure-sensitive adhesive.
As best shown in Fig. -4, the tiers rest upon each other in such a way as to provide a rotating unit, the upper face of a base 34 and the lower face of an associated plate 54 being bonded together by quantities of pressure-sensitive adhesive, as shown at 56. This rotating unit rests upon a fibre board disk 58 which in turn rotatably rests upon one of nuts 30.
Resting upon the topmost of the tiers 20, crown tier 24 is the form of a horizontal base 60 and upwardly diverging planar panels 62, the base and the panels initially constituting integral portions of a cardboard blank and thereafter the panels being folded upwardly and secured in position by tabs 64, the outer faces of which are provided with pressure-sensitive adhesive. An alternative form of crown tier 66 is shown in Fig. 8 as including a base 68, five lower converging panels 70 and five upper converging panels 72 meeting at an apex 74. The base and panels of alternative crown 66 initially constitute portions of a cardboard blank, of which the outwardly extending panels are folded upwardly and inwardly and thereafter are secured by masking tape at apex 74.
It will be understood that the tiers may be separated into two or more units rotatable independently of one another with the aid, for example, of a collar about post 26 upon which one of plates 50 rotatably rests.
Since certain changes may be made in the above product without departing from the scope of the invention herein involved, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted in an illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What is claimed is:
1. A display rack comprising a base, a post upstanding from said base, and a plurality of tiers, each tier including an integral plastic shell having downwardly diverging panels and'horizontal sills extending from the lower edges thereof, a plate upon which said sills rest, a brace extending between said plate and said shell, and means for cent'eriiig'sa'idtier for rotation upon said post. 2. A display rack comprising: a base; a post upstanding from said'base; a plurality of tiers, each tier including a shell having downwardly diverging and generally horizontal sills extending from the lower edges thereof, said sills defining channels and providing rims outwardly of said channels, a plate upon which the bights of said channels rest, and a brace extending between said plate and said shell; and means for centering said tiers for rotation upon said post. i I
'3; The display rack of claim 2 wherein said shell is formed of integral plastic. 4. The display rack of claim 2 wherein said rims form an apron that at least partially conceals said plate. 5. The display rack of claim 2 wherein the shell of one of said tiers is secured by an adhesive to the plate of another of said tiers.
6. The display rack of claim 2 wherein said rims form an apron that conforms to the edge of said plate.
7. A display rack comprising a base, a post upstanding from said base, a plurality of tiers, each tier including a shell having downwardly diverging panels and generally horizontal sills extending from the lower edges thereof, said sills defining channels and providing rims outwardly of said channels, a plate upon which the bights of said channels rest, and a brace extending between said plate and said shell, and means for centering said tier for rotafi n "Le s post, 'hfi l er t 'midlf, mie tively flexible plastic, said rims constituting an apron that at least partially conceals and that conforms to the edges of said plate, the shell of one of said tiers being secured by an adhesive to theplate of another of said tiers, said brace and said plate being composed of relatively stifi cardboard.
