7 Claims. (Cl. 216-33) This invention relates to a device for holding a roll of coiled tape and releasing a strip therefrom, and more particularly to a dispenser for pressure sensitive tape.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a tape dispenser which holds a strip of tape in position for immediate use.
It is another object of the invention to provide a tape dispenser and applicator which can be manipulated with one hand. 7 Further objects and advantages of this invention will become evident as the description proceeds and from an examination of the accompanying drawing which illustrates one embodiment of the invention and in which similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
This application is a continuation-in-part of my previously filed application, Serial No. 529,743, filed August 22, 1955, now abandoned.

Referring now to Figures 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings, the reference numeral 10 indicates generally a dispenser for pressure sensitive tape embodying the invention. In the dispenser, a holder for a roll of coiled tape includes a pair of side walls 11, 12 and an end wall 14 of a width smaller than the diameter of the roll of tape 15. In each of the side walls are pairs of corresponding holes 16. Each of the pairs of holes 16 are aligned so that a pin 18 may be inserted therein for supporting rolls of coiled tape of various diameters. The plurality of pairs of holes for pin 18 also permit adjustment of a single coil on the holder as the tape is dispensed therefrom.
The pin 13 is formed of two parts held together by a suitable locking construction so that it is readily removable from the holder.
An applicator finger 24 is fastened to the end wall 14 of the holder by a rivet 25. The applicator finger has a feed portion 26 that is bent away from the sides of the holder and aligned generally tangentially to the roll of coiled tape.
A pressure portion 27 of the applicator finger is bent with respect to said feed portion 26 so that it presents an accessible surface for the forefinger of the user when dispensing a strip of tape, as clearly shown in Figure 1. The feed portion 26 and the pressure portion 27 form an obtuse angle with one another opening away from the holder and coil of tape.
At the under surface of the feed portion 26 is jourlQQ 2 naled a roller 30 adjacent to end wall 14. The roller is supported on a pin 31 between ears 32. A pair of lugs 34 are formed on the feed portion adjacent the pressure portion of the applicator finger, spaced apart about the width of the strip of tape to be dispensed, and folded under the bottom of the applicator finger to provide a guideway.
At the end of the applicator finger is a saw tooth edge 36 for cutting the tape to the proper length.
From the foregoing the operation of the device should be apparent. A roll of coiled tape is mounted in the holder by removing pin 18 and inserting the roll between the side walls 11, 12. The pin is then placed in a selected pair of holes 16. A strip of the tape is peeled from the coil and fed between roller 30 and the under surface of feed portion 26, then in the guideway under lugs 34 and to the serrated edge 36 of the applicator finger, with the sticky side of the tape facing away from the finger. The tape in this position is ready for use. In order to apply a strip of tape, the holder is grasped between the thumb and third finger, with the forefinger of the hand resting on the pressure portion 27, as shown in Figure 1. The strip of tape is then applied to a desired surface, the pressure on the tape being asserted through the pressure portion 27 by the forefinger of the hand. To cut the tape off, all that is required is to tip the holder up until the cutter edge 36 is in engagement with the tape, twist the cutter edge against one edge of the tape to start the cut, and a strip of tape will be neatly and quickly cut off to a desired length.
Referring now to the modification of the invention shown in Figures 4 and 5 of the drawings, the holder for a roll of coiled pressure sensitive tape comprises a twopart transparent cylindrical container 40, the end walls of which are constructed to telescope one within the other and provide a friction fit of the parts together so that the side walls are maintained in parallel relation and spaced apart a distance approximating the width of a roll of coiled tape to be supported therein. In each of the side walls are registering axial holes frictionally holding therein the pin 41. Within the container and mounted on the pin is a disc or cylinder 42 upon which is mounted a roll of coiled pressure sensitive tape 43. By this means the roll of tape 43 is axially and rotatably mounted within the container 40. Through one wall of the container is a slot 44 and just inwardly of this slot is pivotally mounted as at 45 one end of a relatively short arcuate finger 46 which has a serrated free edge 47 for severing a length of tape from the roll. The tape is fed from. the roll through opening 44, alongside of the finger 46. When a desired length of tape is manually withdrawn from the roll, it may be moved against the serrated edge 47 and readily severed, and then applied wherever desired. Then a finger of the users hand may press against the arcuate finger moving it to the position shown in dotted lines which will cause the sticky side of the tape end 48 to engage a thickened portion 49 of the container, from which it may be removed when another length of the tape is desired.
The structure of container 50 in the modification shown in Figures 6 and 7 is substantially the same as that shown in Figures 4 and 5. A pin 51 is frictionally mounted within axially alined holes in the opposite side walls of the container, upon which pin, within the container, is rotatably mounted a disc or cylinder 52 upon which is supported a roll of coiled pressure sensitive tape 53. Through a wall of the container is a slot 54, just inwardly of which is pivotally mounted, as at 55, one end of an arcuate applicator finger 56 which is approximately the width of the tape 53. A short distance from the container the applicator finger is provided with a pair of lugs 57 which support therebetween a guide roller 58.
Between the guide roller 58 and the end of the applicator finger 56, and on opposite side edges thereof is a pair of guide lugs 59 which extend toward each other in slightly spaced relation to the finger 56. The tape is fed from the roll 53through opening 54 between roller 58 and finger 56, under the lugs 59 and out alongside the finger 56. The operation of this modification of the invention is substantially identical to that described in connection with the modification of Figures 1, 2 and 3. There is more flexibility in this modification, however, due to the pivotal mounting of the applicator finger to the housing.
In the drawing and specification, there has been set forth a preferred embodiment of the invention, and although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only and not for purposes of limitation. Changes in form and in the proportion of parts, as well as the substitution of equivalents are contemplated, as circumstances may suggest or render expedient, without departing from the spirit or scope of this invention as further defined in the following claims.
I claim:
1. A dispenser for pressure sensitive tape comprising a pair of side walls, an end wall for supporting said side walls spaced so that a roll of coiled tape can be held therebetween, axially registering holes on each of said side walls, a removable pin in said holes and extending between said side walls, a coiled roll of pressure sensitive tape supported on said pin, an applicator finger fastened at one end to said dispenser and having a feed portion bent away from said side walls, and a pressure portion bent with respect to said feed portion parallel to the lower edge of said side walls, a tape guide roller supported on the lower surface of said applicator finger adjacent said end wall, and a pair of guide lugs supported on the lower surface of said feed portion adjacent said pressure portion whereby a strip of tape from said roll may be directed under said pressure finger over said guide roller and said guide lugs to the end of said applicator finger.
2. A dispenser as set forth in claim 1, said applicator finger being pivotally mounted at one end between said side walls.
3. A dispenser for pressure sensitive tape comprising spaced walls forming a housing for a roll of said tape, a pin between said side walls for supporting a roll of coiled tape, a second pin between said side walls adjacent an edge thereof, and an applicator finger pivotally 4 mounted at one end on said second pin and extending away from said edge, said applicator finger having a feed portion issuing from said pivoted end, and a pressure portion bent with respect to the feed portion, a guide roller supported on said feed portion, and guiding lugs supported on said pressure portion.
4. A dispensing device for a roll of pressure sensitive tape comprising a pair of side walls, an end wall connecting said side walls and supporting said side walls in spaced relation, axially alined holes through said side walls, a pin extending through alined holes, a roll of said tape supported on said pin between said side walls, an applicator finger, means securing one end of said applicator finger to said end wall, said applicator finger extending outwardly from said end wall, a tape guiding roller supported on the under side of said applicator finger outwardly from said end wall, and guiding lugs on said applicator finger outwardly of said guiding roller, said tape being fed from the roll along the under side of said finger to and between the applicator finger and the guide roller and the guide lugs to the end of the applicator finger.
5. A dispensing device according to claim 4, said applicator finger having a feed portion and a pressure portion, said guiding roller supported on said feed portion adjacent said end wall.
6. A dispensing device according to claim 4, said applicator finger having a feed portion and a pressure portion, said guiding lugs being on said pressure portion outwardly of said guiding roller.
7. A dispensing device according to claim 4, said applicator finger having a feed portion bent away from the end of the holder, and a pressure portion bent with respect to the feed portion, said guiding roller supported on the under side of said feed portion and said guiding lugs being supported on the under side of said pressure portion.
