PATENT ()FFICE.
OORNELIOUS COLLINS, OF ORMANVILLE, IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-'IHIR-DS TO JOHN B. ENNIS AND WILLIAM W ENNIS, BOTH OF OTTUMWA, IOWA.
BAG-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,564, dated February 12, 1884.
I I Application filed November 12, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern! Be it known that I, OORNELIOUs COLLINS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Ormanville, in the county of "Wapello and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bag- Fastenersyand I do hereby declare the fol-' .lowing to be a full, clear, and exact descripopen and removed from the bag. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the fastener closed, with the wires for attaching it permanently to the bag .or sack; and Fig. 4 is a cross-section through line w.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to so-called bagfasteners, for-fastening the tops of bags or sacks containing flour or other merchandise; and it consists in the construction and combination of parts of the clamping device or clasp adapted for such purpose, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
My improved fastener consists of two parts, A and B, hinged at O, and beveled so as to form sharp upper edges, a and 1), adapted to bite the neck of the sack or bag (shown at C) after it has been gathered. The free end of the part Ais constructed with projecting lips -D, between which is hinged the latch E,which is provided with a projecting finger-piece, F, having shoulders G, and cut away at H, to form a small recess for. the insertion'of the thumb in unlocking the device. The other part, B, has simply two parallel projecting lips or cars, I, at its free end, adapted to engage the latch, as shown in Fig. 3, and of such a shape that they will bear against shoulders G of the finger-piece when the fastener is in its closed or locked position.
At the hinged ends of the curved parts A and B are two small holes or apertures, J, through which a wire, K,'may be inserted, for the purpose of attachingthe fastener permanently t0 the bag, so that it shall not become lost or mislaid when the bag is open. This fastening-wire may, however, be dispensed with, if desired. 5
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the operation of my bag tie or fastener will readily be un derstood without requiring further explanation. When the. fastener is in its closed or locked position, the lips or ears I will bind against the slanting shoulders G- of the thumb piece, thus forcing the body of the thumbpiece F up against the outside of the part B, the thumb-piece being soshaped that it will fit the curved outside of said part B.
To unlock the fastener, all that is necessary is to force the thumb-piece out from the part B a sufficient distance to permit the ears I to slip or slide past the shoulders G, when it will readily come open.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- In a bag clasp or fastener, the curved parts, 5 A and B, having beveled edges a b, hinged at O, and provided with the projecting lips or ears D and I, in combination with the hinged latch E, provided with the shouldered thumbpiece F, recessed at H, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OORNELIOUS COLLINS.
