The electric controls provided by the invention and the sequence of operation which they establish will be understood from the following description in conjunction with the wiring diagram in Fig. 14, in which the AC. power lines L-1 and L4 may be provided with a suitable disconnect switch (not shown). In the normal operation while a roll 33 is being wound, the reel arms will be generally in the reverse of the position shown in Fig. 1 to the extent that the winding roll 33 will be in engagement with the pressure roll 90. The circuits as a whole will be as shown in Fig. 14 with the exception that switch ns-s will be held closed because the knife pivot arms are retracted, and also one of the clutches 40 or 41 will be engaged by energization of its associated control relay. If it is assumed that clutch 40 is engaged, then the relay CLAR will be energized and locked in through limit switch LS-S and the normally closed push button switch 120. Since valve SV-4 is energized to engage clutch 40, pressure switch PSA will be open, and relay CLPR will therefore also be open.
The main power source 46 operates during winding at a constantly decreasing speed determined by its control circuits aspointed out above, and since such circuits are largely conventional they are indicated in Fig. 14 merely by the block diagram 125; Similarly the'details' of the circuits for the indexing motor 25 are not shown in greater detail than the indication of a reversing switch 122, which is operated selectively by the relays WP and WR to produce forward and reverse indexing movement of the reel arms respectively. Fig. 14 also indicates each valve SV-1 which is' energized in timed relation with the operations of the other parts of the winder during roll changing as described hereafter in connection'with the wiring diagram. Similarly the knife pivot cylinder 82 and the knife operating cylinder 89 are controlled by solenoid valves SV-Z and SV-S. The clutches 4t and 41 on the Winder spindles are also arranged for individual engagement and disengagement by means of solenoid valves SV-4 and SV-S respectively, and the pressure line to each of these clutches is also connected with one of a pair of pressure switches PSA and PSB connected in series erated by cams 165, 106 and 107 on the winder shaft 24,
the cam 195 having a pair of opposed high points while the cams 106 and 107 have single high points since the roll change occurs' twice for each complete revolution of the arms 22 and 23. Normally closed switch LS-l is of the single-pole double-throw variety, while switches LSA and LSB are normally open single-pole switches. Figs. 8 and 9 show switch LS5, which is a normally of these relays as operating a normally closed switch in the circuit to the other relay in order to prevent both of these relays from being energized at the same time.
In the above example, when the roll 33 is fully wound and it is desired to change to a new core, the roll change sequence is initiated by closing the push button switch 126. This completes an energizing circuit for relay SBR' through the normally closed manual switch and the back contacts 131 of relay SMR, and relay SBR locks itself in through its contacts 132. Closing of relay SBR completes an energizing circuit through its contacts 133 to the solenoid valve SV-l to effect tensioning of the belt 55. Similarly, closing of relay SBR will complete an energizing circuitto the indexing motor relay WF, this circuit running through switch LS-3, which is still held closed, the back contacts of switch LS-1, and the 'contacts134 of relay SBR.
This sequence of events causes the indexing motor 25 to move the reel in clockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 6 until the switches LSB and LS-l have been tripped by their respective cams, which will bring the reel. into the roll starting position shown in Fig. 1 wherein the empty core is engaged with the pressure roll 90. In this position, the pulley' 61- will be engaged with the belt 55 to bring the new core 33 up to web speed. The reel is stopped in this position by operation of switch LS4, which cuts off the circuit to relay WP and instead completes a circuit through the contacts 135 of relay SBR to the solenoid valve SV2.
Energizing of valve SV-2 causes the knife pivot arms sesame to move'into their fullline positions shown in Figs; 2 and 5', andthe accompanying movement of the camscar- I ried by-the torque tube'77 first opens sW-iteh-LS Sand -will remain complete aftc'rswitcli LS'B opens, -s'imilarly thencloses switch LS4'-in preparation for-operation of 7 cutting and-transferringthe web tothenewco're I This operation is completed by depressing the push button switch 140 to-energize valve SV-S', which causes the knife to' carry out its cutting stroke as shown in Fig 1 by u'tting thewe'band carrying the-cut l'eadingend around the new coretowards the nip'with the pressure roll 90.
When the knife approaches the limit of its cutting stroke, the-cam- IO'Son the knife-operating arm 88 opens switch LS-S, thus breaking the locking circuit for relay CLAR and causingclutch 40'to deenergize. The valve SV-3 remainsenergized" only so longas switch 140 is held closed, and as soonas this switch is released,*the knife-returns to its retractedposition and permits switch LS-5 to reclose without immediate ell ect; However, the deenergizingof' valve SV-4removed pressure from switch PSA and thus allowed this switch to close and thereby to complete an energizing circuit" for; relay CLP-R.
Closing ofrelay CLPR completes a circuit through its contacts to the main power source control circuits 125 signaling the completion of roll 33; severance ofweb, and transfer of the web to the core driven by belt 55. During the subsequent interval, the main power source represented by the motor 46' now disconnected from the web accelerates tobring its speed up to the rpm; necessary to match thespeed of the empty core which is being driven by the belt 55. The main power source control circuits include a signal means which is represented by the relay 145, effective to complete the energizing cir cuit fora relay SMR when thismatching speed condition is attained.
circuit for relay CLBR through its contacts 150 and switch LSB', which has been closed by cam 2107, and thereby completes-an energizing 'circuitfor valve 'SV-S to cause clutch 41 to engage. Closing of relay SMR will also close itscontacts, 151 in the circuitto relay CHAR, but this circuit will remain open during this: roll is removed, and this change is initiated simultaneously with engagement of the clutch by deenergizing relay SBR as a result of the opening of its holding circuit through the back contacts 131 of relay SMR. This deenergizes valve SV 1 to shift the tensioning pulley 62 to its retracted position, and the air flow to clutch 41 and the bleed off ofair from; cylinder 66 are readily regulated to provide a smooth transition of winding power from the auxiliary drive to the main winder power source. Opening of relay SBR will also 'deenergize valve SV-2 to cause the knife pivot arms 74 and 75 to return to their retractedposition, and the accompanyingmovement of 'the' cams on torque tube 77 will cause switch LS-4 to open and switch LS-3 to close,
This reestablishes normal winding conditions, which will continue until the layers of the web built up on the core-33 have increased to a thickness causing movement --of the pressure roll arms 91 and 92 sufiiciently to trip switch LS-Z. This completes an energizing circuit to relay WF to produce forward indexing movement of the reel until switch LS2 is reset, and this incremental build-up will continue so long as the winding'roll remains in engagement with the pressure roll 90. Switches LS-1' and LSB' will be reset by their operating cams 105 and 107. after the reel has indexed. an adequate distance the relay SMR will 'deener'gize'afterth-thicknessofthe. new roll has increased to such extent that the speed-of the main power source has decreased suhicientlyfrom its empty core speed to provide a suitable of this changed condition, as by opening the relay- 145; This returns the contacts of relay SMR to their normal positions in'preparation for-the'next roll change'.--
The indexing movements of the reel during the su sequent period of winding on the new roll will remain under the control-of switch LS#-2. until thenext roll change is initiated by operating switch 126; During the winding of this new roll, the full roll will be removed at theback of the winder and replaced by a new core in theusual way.
The-invention accordingly provides for accurate automatic" control of the movements of 'the several parts during roll changing, and at the same time it" retains for the operatorthe selection of the time forinitiating a roll change and the time for elfecting the actual web When relay SMR closes, it completes an energizing pletion' of the roll change.-
