Ma ma/4 United States Patent COMBINATION PILLOW AND RADIO Wallace A. Bounds, 3741 136th Place SE., Bellevue, Wash.
Filed July 3, 1958, Ser. No. 746,440
2 Claims. (Cl. 250-14) The invention relates to an improvement in (1) radios and sound sources and (2) pillows and padding by their combination; and the object of the improvement is to provide the use of both at the same time and place conveniently.
One form of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the bottom of the combination; Figure 2, a vertical section view along the line 2-2, Figure 1, illustrating the two halves of the pillow joined by a circumferential zipper and the location of the radio within; and Figure 3, a detailed view of the bisected and zippered isthmus between two parts of the pillows created by the openings for the radio control knobs showing an alternate means for inserting and removing the radio.
In Figure 1 the bottom half 1 of a pillow is shown with two holes 3 coming thru bottom surface 1A made so that the radios control knobs 7 attached to radio 5 may be accessible. Figure 2 is a vertical section view along the line 22, Figure 1, of the bottom half 1 of a pillow and the top half 2 of the pillow. The top half 2 appears in the lower part of Figure 2. The top half 2 and the bottom half 1 are joined by a circumferential zipper 4. The inner surface 1B of the bottom half 1 is made to form a padded space in which radio 5 is confined. Speaker 6 is a sound source and sound from speaker 6 may be heard by a person whose ear is against surface 2A. For non-battery operated radios power cord 8 in Figure 1 exits at zippers 4 terminus. Figure 3 shows an alternate means of construction of the entire assembly by a detail view of the isthmus 9 formed by the Patented Nov. 1, 1960 holes 3 in the bottom portion of the pillow making the construction of the pillow in two halves and the circumferential zipper unnecessary, by bisecting the isthmus 9. The two parts of the isthmus 9 are then joined and disjoined by means of zipper 10. When zipper 10 disjoins the bisected parts of the isthmus 9 the resulting opening is made large enough to insert and remove radio 5.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. The combination of a pillow and a radio, said pillow having a top surface and a bottom surface, a radio positioning area formed in the pillow adjacent one surface thereof, said radio including station and volume control knobs projecting from a surface thereof, means secured to the pillow and engageable with the radio to hold the radio within said radio positioning area, said knobs being exposed for adjustment externally of said pillow, and a bisecting member extending across said area, said bisecting member including separable means joining the sides thereof after the radio is in place in said recess to retain the radio in relatively fixed position.
2. The combination claimed in claim 1, wherein said radio positioning area is situated substantially at the center of said pillow, said top surface having a downwardly turned inner portion extending to the upper surface of the radio positioning area, said top surface including a raised center portion across which said bisecting member extends.
