The present invention relates to hosiery packages and has particular reference to packages in which hosiery is stretched on a blank insert, covered and sealed to provide an attarctive and utilitarian manner of exhibiting and storing the goods for sale.

Outstanding among the developments in this field, are

.those of John C. Berry as exemplified in Patents Nos.

2,696,295 and 2,742,149. These patents relate to the packaging of stretch sox, and although closely related the present invention is an improvement thereover.

An objective of invention is therefore to provide a hosiery package for variant sized goods of various lengths, wherein the package size is uniform and comprises a substantially rectangular unit, suitable for storing.

Another objective of invention is to provide a unique insert for stretched hosiery packages in which the insert per se conforms substantially to the hosiery preserving same against deformation over long periods of time.

Another objective of invention resides in the development of a hosiery package, the top portions of which are readily and releasably sealed for access.

Yet another objective includes the development of blank hosiery inserts, suitable for packaging variant sized hosiery in packagw of substantially common size.

With these and other objects in view, the invention may be more readily comprehended by reference to the following drawings and subsequent description:

FIG. 1 is an elevation view of one form of blank forming an insert;

FIG. 2 is an elevation view of the insert of FIG. 1 with hosiery set thereon for packaging;

FIG. 3 is an illustrative elevation of the FIG. 2 element, a portion of sox and insert being bent upon itself intermediate of ends of the insert;

FIG. 4 shows a complete double hosiery and insert package in which a cover member has been applied and releasably sealed at an end;

FIG. 5 is an elevation modification of the blank insert shown in FIG. 1;

FIGS. 6, 7 and 8 are elevations showing packaging stages of the insert of FIG. 5, the FIG. 8 drawing including a pair of hosiery on matched inserts;

FIG. 9 is an elevational modification view of the FIG. 1 blank insert;

FIGS. 10, 11 and 12 are illustrative elevations of packaging phases of the FIG. 9 modification, FIG. 12 includ ing a pair of hosiery and matched inserts;

FIGS. 14, 15 and 16 are illustrative of packaging phases of the insert of FIG. 13, FIG. 16 including matched inserts with a pair of hosiery mounted thereon; the FIG. 17 view is in vertical cross section of the package shown in FIG. 16, being illustrative of the relation of the elements forming said package.

Referring to the drawings, the blanks comprising inserts of FIG. 1, 5, 9 and 13 are common in that they conform substantially to the configuration of an out-stretched sock, there being a curvilinear bottom portion 12 as in FIG. 1. The intermediate portion is shown at 14, the neck portion at 18 and the top at 20. At 16 the insert is scored for folding as shown in FIG. 3, after the sock has been mounted on the insert, as in FIG. 2.

The entire package consisting of blank insert 10, sock 22 and cover 24, as well as seal 28, is shown in FIG. 4.

Here it will be noted that by bending the bottom portion 12 upon itself as in FIG. 3 the hosiery and insert together form a substantially rectangular bottom portion 26 and overall package FIG. 4. In practice, the socks or hosiery providing a pair are each placed on separate inserts as in FIG. 3, and the respective socks and inserts turned inwardly so that the bottom portions are contiguous, the entire being packaged as in FIG. 4 with the open end of the cover being retained in position by a suitable seal 28. Preferably, the top of the package is secured by stapling or other means holding the respective top portions 20 of the inserts 10 in contiguous relation.

The FIG. 17 showing applies equally to the respective packages of FIGS. 4, 8, 12 and 16 wherein it will be noted that the basic relation between corresponding elements is the same for all packages.

Referring now to the FIG. 5 modification, that blank insert 50 has bottom portion 52, intermediate portion 54, neck portion 58, top portion 60 and is scored at 56. However, before folding inthe package the insert 50 receives the sock 62, the neck portion of the sock resting on the neck portion 58 of the insert '50 as shown.

In FIG. 7 both the sock 62 and insert are bent so that the bottom portion thereof lies immediately beneath the neck portion of the respective inserts and sock and the entire is packaged as shown in FIG. 8. The package has cover 64 substantially rectangular bottom end 66 and seal 68, the entire being held in position by stapling or other means 7 0.

Referring now to FIG. 9 the hosiery insert there shown includes an elongated intermediate area 94 having bottom portion 92, neck portion 98 and top 100. In the successive modifications shown in FIGS. 5, 9 and 13 and in FIG. 1, the scoring or bending portion of the respective inserts is at substantially the same distance (equidistant) from the top or neck portion of the insert, however, the bottom portion of the respective modifications is elongated as shown.

Referring now to FIG. 13, there is shown blank insert having bottom portion 132, intermediate portion 134, neck and top portions 138 and 140 respectively. The serrated transverse area is indicated as at 36. In FIG. 14 the sock is attached to the insert beneath the top 140, the top of the sock conforming to neck portion 138.

FIG. 15 indicates the manner in which the bottom portion 132 of the sock encased insert is folded upon itself, and FIG. 16 shows cover 144 having a substantially rectangular configuration, both at the bottom 146 and top 148, the entire package being secured atop as at 150. In FIG. 17, this being a cross section of the FIG. 16 package, the respective and contiguous inserts 130 and 130' have their bottom portions 132 and 132' folded inwardly so that they lie adjacent and corresponding sock areas are contiguous with respect to one another. Atop, the top portions are brought together in V-shaped configuration, these being secured by the seal 148 and clamping or other suitable means.

Socks 22, 62, 102 and 142 respectively are packaged so that the heel portions of the respective socks within one package are placed on opposite corners of the overall package. In this way, a more uniformly thick package is obtained. Otherwise, the respective heel portions may be located substantially centrally of the respective inserts, each heel portion being immediately opposite the other, these heel portions being retained interiorly of the insert which is bent upon itself.

From the foregoing, it will be apparent that various modifications of the invention may be made without departing from the spirit thereof, as exemplified in the drawings, specification or claims appended hereto.

I claim:

1. A closed package for hosiery having an elastic open end, comprising at least one insert; hosiery mounted for display upon said insert; said insert being cut to form a foot portion for the foot of said hosiery, a neck portion of reduced Width for the open end of said hosiery, and a top for said insert adjacent the neck portion thereof and limiting upward movement of said open end of said hosiery, said top being of corresponding width to the foot portion of said insert to define thereby a substantially rigid rectangular package base member, the foot portion of said insert being bent upon itself to form a rectangular end to the package; and a flexible cover member securing the insert and hosiery in superposed relation, said cover member and insert top being releasably sealed adjacent respective top ends.

In packages for hosiery having elastic open ends, an insert for the hosiery, comprising a blank conforming in configuration to stretched hosiery and including bottom, intermediate, neck and top portions, said intermediate portion being bent upon itself to define a rectangular end and said neck portion being of reduced Width dimension with respect to said other portions of said insert for a length substantially equal to the length of the elastic open end of said hosiery and the top portion defining a substantially rectangular end of greater width than said neck portion so as to limit upward movement of said hosiery, said top and intermediate portions being of the same width to form thereby a rectangular package together With cover means for the package joining respective intermediate and top portions exteriorly.

A closed package for hosiery having elastic open ends, comprising two juxtaposed inserts, of flexible sheet material, said inserts having respective top, neck, intermediate and bottom portions of the same configuration, said top, intermediate and bottom portions being of corresponding Width, said inserts at said neck portions being of reduced width between said top and intermediate portions for a length substantially equal to the length of the elastic open end of said hosiery, said neck portions being of equal width their entire length, and said intermediate portions being bent upon themselves to define a rectangular end and being contiguous with each other, a cover member of flexible material, said cover member being a bag of similar rectangular dimensions as said juxtaposed inserts, said cover member being configured to snugly encasc said inserts and said hosiery, thereby preventing lateral movement of said inserts and holding said inserts contiguous with each other as a relatively rigid package, compared to the flexibility of the inserts and said cover member, and said cover member and insert tops being releasably secured adjacent their respective ends.

4. A closed package as in claim 3, said cover member being of translucent flexible material.

5. A closed package for hosiery as in claim 3, heel portions of said hosiery being supported upon opposed corners of said rectangular ends of said insert intermediate portions.
