Description

1961 s. L. GOLDMAN 2,995,387
FLEXIBLE TRANSPARENT LOOSE LEAF BINDER Filed May 13, 1959 INVENTOR. SANFDRDL. BULDMAN 2,995,387 FLEXIBLE TRANSPARENT LOOSE LEAF BINDER Sanford L. Goldman, 129 W. Walnut St., Long Beach, N.Y. Filed May 13, 1959, Ser. No. 813,024 2 Claims. (Cl. 281-29) The present invention is an improved flexible, transparent loose leaf binder which requires a minimum of operations in the fabrication thereof and is, therefore, simple and inexpensive to construct and assemble.
Briefly, the loose leaf binder of the invention comprises a transparent light-weight plastic front cover sheet made of acetate, vinyl or the like, one long marginal portion of which is folded and sandwiched between the horizontal sides or strips of a single fold of the rear cover, and firmly attached thereto, as by cement or paste, without the need for metallic fasteners such as staples, pins or eyelets used in conventional loose leaf binders. The rear cover is one continuous piece of light-weight stiff, though flexible, paper or imitation leather. One end of the rear cover is provided with a single fold the sides of which are parallel to the main body portion and connected thereto by a back portion. The back portion is at right angles to both the main body portion and the single fold, and forms therewith a single continuous piece. On the inside of the back portion of the rear cover is the loose-leaf ring binding assembly.
A detailed description of the invention follows, in con junction with a drawing, wherein:
FIG. 1 is a top or plan-view of the loose leaf binder of the invention as viewed from the external or outside face of the transparent plastic sheet; and
FIG. 2 is an end or sectional view of the binder taken along the line 2-2 of FIG. 1.
The loose leaf binder of the invention comprises a transparent light weight plastic front cover sheet of acetate, vinyl or the like which is stilf but fairly flexible and has a thickness sufiicient to provide adequate resistance to wear and tear, and is secured in a manner described hereinafter to a stiff paper or imitation leather rear cover 12. For example, the thickness of the front cover sheet 10 may be about .01 inch. The rear cover includes a main body portion 13, a back 14, and a single fold having coextensive sides or strips 15, 16, all forming a single continuous piece. Strips and 16 of the single fold are horizontal and parallel to the main body portion 13, but at right angles to the back 14. One (the left) marginal edge of the transparent front cover plastic sheet 10 is folded back on itself along sharply creased line 9 to form a permanently creased relatively stifi strip 17 which is inclined to the inner face of the front cover sheet and sandwiched between the strips 15 and 16 of the single fold. A paper strip 18 which is highly tacky on both sides is provided between the underside of foldedover transparent strip 17 and the upper side of paper strip 16 for adhesively bonding the strip 17 firmly to the paper strip 16, thereby producing a secure and integral permament bond which will withstand wear, tear, and rough handling encountered during use of the loose leaf binder. A suitable highly adhering adhesive or cement 19 is provided on both sides of paper strip 16. The transparent folded over strip 17 has substantially the same width and is coextensive in length with the paper strips 15 and 16 fates Patent 0 Patented Aug. 8, 1961 of the single fold of the rear cover, while the paper strip 18 is narrower than the other strips.
The loose leaf ring binder assembly includes a relatively rigid arcuate-shaped metallic strip 20, such as steel, which is fastened by two spaced rivets 21 to the back 14, and a plurality of spaced metal rings 22.
The loose leaf binder of the invention is characterized by simplicity of construction and ease of fabrication. It eliminates the need for pins, staples or eyelets for holding the front and rear covers firmly together. It is rugged, can withstand considerable rough handling, and inexpensive to manufacture.
What is claimed is:
1. A loose leaf binder comprising a front plastic cover sheet folded along one marginal area to provide a permanently creased relatively stilt strip folded back and inclined to the inner face of the front cover sheet, a rear flexible cover sheet having a main body portion, a back and a single fold at one end in one continuous piece, the sides of said single fold being horizontal and parallel to the main body portion but at right angles to the back of the rear cover, said single fold being provided with an opening adjacent the upper edge of said back, the folded-over strip of said front cover being inserted for its full length and width into said opening, and a highly tacky thin strip of paper or the like within said single fold and positioned between one surface of said foldedover strip and the adjacent side of the single fold for firmly bonding the folded-over strip of the front cover sheet to the interior of the single fold, said tacky thin strip constituting the sole means for securing the foldedover strip of the front cover to said single fold.
2. A loose leaf binder comprising a front transparent plastic cover sheet folded along one marginal area to provide a permanently creased relatively stiff strip folded back and inclined to the inner face of the front cover sheet, a rear flexible cover sheet of stiff paper having a main body portion, a back portion and a single fold at one end in one continuous piece, a loose leaf ring assembly attached to said back portion, the sides of said single fold being horizontal and parallel to the main body portion but at right angles to the back of the rear cover, said single foldbeing provided with an opening adjacent the upper edge of said back portion, the folded-over strip of said front cover being inserted for its full length and width into said opening, and a highly tacky thin strip of paper having adhesive material on both sides thereof within said single fold and positioned between one surface of said folded-over strip and the adjacent side of the single fold for firmly bonding the folded-over strip of the front cover sheet to the interior of the single fold, said tacky thin strip constituting the sole means for se curing the folded-over strip of the front cover to said single fold, said folded-over strip of said front cover being coextensive in length and width with the sides of the single fold of said rear cover.
