Description

J. WALTON.
DOOR LATCH.
No. 30,016. Patented Sept. 11, 1860 BIZ/Eiesswt THI; NORRIS Pam co. PNQTO-L mu. wAsmNaToM I: c
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J ONATHAN YVALTON, OF BROOKLYN, YORK.
DOOR-LATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 30,016, dated September 11, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JONATHAN l/VALTON, of Brooklyn city, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement on a Nosing or Face-Plate of a Door-Latch; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a vertical representation. Fig. 2 is a front and side view, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section.
The nature of my invention consists in providing the nosing or face plate of a door latch with a slot as shown by A in Fig. 2, said slot serving as a passage for the latch of the door. At the base of said slot I construct an inclined plane B, as shown in Fig. 2. Upon this inclined plane the ball C, also represented in Fig. 2, traverses when acted upon by the latch of the door.
Fig. 3 represents the course of ball, G, which is made to vibrate up the inclined plane by the nose of the door latch striking it on entering slot A in act of shutting, and also shows the position of said ball when the door is shut. Fig. 1 also represents the ball Cs position when the door is closed.
The object of this invention is to dispense with the friction caused by the latch of a door striking against the edge of the nosing or face plate, to prevent the jar, noise, and general fracture of the door, frame, hinges and look.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination and arrangement of the slot A the inclined plane B and the ball 0 substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
JONATHAN WVALTON. Witnesses:
