(all. 312 28) The present invention relates to an extensible and retractable typewriter support for desks, or the like, and is an improvement over my invention for a similar device described and claimed in my US. Letters Patent No. 2,710,783, dated June 6, 1955.
In my said Letters Patent, 1 have described and claimed an extensible and retractable typewriter support for desks in which a typewriter supporting platform is pivotally supported by a pair of frame members each consisting of a carriage that rides on a horizontal rail and a pair of spaced substantially parallel bell crank links that are pivoted on the carriage on an edge of the platform. in the device of my said Letters Patent, the platform is movable forwardly and outwardly of the desk interior, in suspended position, and, at its outermost position on the supporting rails, is tilted upwardly about the link pivots on the carriage, to an elevated plane at which it is re leasably held in place. in my said device, means are provided for adjusting the elevated plane of the Platform to suit the convenience of individual users of the typewriter resting thereon and for securing the platform in such adjusted position.
The present invention is directed to the provision of improved means for adjusting the plane of the platform when in extended position, to make such adjustment simpler, easier and more convenient.
It is also an obiect of the present invention to provide improved means for locking the platform in adjusted elevated position, whereby the platform may be simultaneously locked and released, on both edges thereof, by a single, simple manual operation.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a platform adjusting and locking means of the character described which is itself adjustable to compensate for any irregularities in the desk structure resulting from faulty assembly and for distortion of the desk frame due to an uneven supporting surface or change of supporting surface, such as might position the opposed platform locking means at different levels, to thereby restore such locking means to an even level.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a platform level adjusting and platform locking means, of the character described, which are of simple construction, easy and simple to produce and install, easy and convenient to operate and affording maximum security for maintaining the platform in locked adjusted position.

Referring now in greater detail to the accompanying drawings illustrating the present invention, the same show a desk ill provided with a typewriter compartment 12, having a forward or front opening 14, and defined by spaced outer and inner pairs of corner posts 16. Each pair of posts 16, on each side of the opening 14, supports,
26 at the rear of the runner leg 24. The pair of runners are connected by a rod 3% at the upper ends of their respective legs 2%.
Each of the runners is disposed inwardly of a rail 18 and its leg 24 is provided at its forward end, nearer its upper edge, with a grooved runner wheel 32 mounted on its outer surface, that engages over the upper edge of a rail 13, and at its rear end, nearer its lower edge, with a second grooved wheel 34 that engages the lower edge of the rail 18. The leg 2- 5- of each runner is also .provided with a pair of pins 36 and 38 respectively, the first of which is disposed adjacent the under edge of rail 18, substantially below the wheel 32, and the latter of which is disposed adjacent the upper edge of the rail 18, preferably slightly forwardly of the wheel .34. The forward edge of each runner leg '24 is formed with a forwardly extending curved central portion 42 and with a cut-aw y or recessed portion 42 below it.
Each of the runner legs 24- has pivoted on its outer surface, between and its supporting rail 18, adjacent its rear, a lock plate 46, which is tiltably supported in generally upwardly extending position and is formed with a lock slot 48 extending inwardly from its forward upper corner. Tilting movement of the lock plate 46 is limited from a diagonally forwardly extending position to a diagonally rearwardly extending position by the laterally offset lug 50 at a lower edge portion thereof which extends into a suitably curved slot 52 formed in the runner leg 24; the ends of the curved slot 52 :aerving as stops for movement of the lug 50 and of its lock plate 46. A torsion spring 54, supported in any desirable manner on the runner leg 24, has one end thereof engaging an inwardly extending flange 56 on the rear edge of the frame member leg 24, and its other end engaging the upper edge of the lug 50, to normally depress it in the slot 52 and thus normally maintain the lock plate 46 in the forwardly tilted'position, as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2.
Each frame member 20 further comprises a forward and rear bell crank lever 58 and 60 respectively, each pivotally supported by its apex, as at 62 and 64, respectively, to the runner leg 24 thereof, in horizontally spaced relation to the other, at a point preferably opposite the longitudinal center line of the supporting rail 18. Each of the bell crank levers 58 and '60 comprises a normally depending leg 66 and a second leg 68 normally horizontally disposed and forwardly extending, when the platformis in retracted position. The rear bell crank 60 is positioned to have its upper side edge portion engage against the lug 50, when the bell crank leg 66 is in dependent position, to limit rearward movement thereof, and the upper edge of its leg 68 is cutout, as at 70, so as to engage against the lug 50, to limit the movement of leg 66 to upright position, to thereby attain limited rotation of the bell crank 60 about its pivot 64, in either direction. The free ends of the legs 66 of each of the bell cranks is pivotally secured, as at 72, on a channel bar 74, which receives and holds the edge portion of the inner end of the typewriter platform 22. The two bell cranks 58 and 60 of each frame member 20 may be joined by the free ends of their legs 68 by a link 76, that is pivotally connected to such ends. The two rear bell cranks 60 of the two frame members 20 are connected by a rod 77, which is connected to the rod 30 at the upper ends of the runners by one or more tension springs 78.
-' The forward bell crank 58 is provided on its outer face with an outwardly extending pin 80, that engages on the cut away edge portion 42 of the forward edge of the runner leg 24, when its leg is in dependent position.
Supported in fixed position on the outer face of each of the rails 18, less than halfway of its length from its forward end, is an upwardly extending plate 82, having an inwardly extending pin 84, substantially at a level with the opening of the slot 48 in the lock plate 46.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that, when in retracted position and out of use, the platform 22 will be suspended below the rails 18 by the arms 66 of the bell cranks 58 and 60. The tension springs 78 will be overbalanced rearwardly relative to the pivot points 64 of the bell cranks 60, to maintain the platform rearwardly tensed; rearward motion, however, being limited "by the engagement of the cut out rear edge portion of the legs 66 of levers 60 engaging against the projection 50 of the lock plate 46.
It will also be apparent that the extending of the platform 22 may be effected by pulling it manually, against the resistance of the tension springs 78, until the springs are overbalanced forwardly of the pivot points 64, and until forward movement along the rails 18 is inhibited, as by the engagement of the pin 84 in the lock slot 48 of lock plate 46, to tilt the lock plate to its limited position defined by the upper end of the slot 52 into which the lock plate lug 50 extends, and by the further means which will hereafter be described. When forward movement of the platform 22 along rails 18 reaches its limit,
" further pull on the platform will cause it to move up wardly, in an arcuate path, on the pivots 64 and 62 or the bell cranks 60 and 58, respectively and pivots 72 at the lower ends of the legs 66 of the bell cranks; maximum extension being when such legs 66 are parallel to the rails 18 and reducing as such legs 66 are raised above the level of the rails 18, to elevate the platform above the rails. It will be further apparent that the more erect the legs 66 are raised above the rails 18, the higher the platform 22 will be moved.
In the present invention I have devised an improved means for regulating and limiting platform height that is of maximum accessibility and is simple and easy to adjust and set, such means locking automatically and not requiring any major disturbance of the installation nor the use of any tools for releasing and resetting. Such improved adjusting and locking means is also capable of being accomplished by substantially anyone, at any time and convenience, with the use of such simple means as a pencil or similar rod-shaped article. Such means is also relatively simple to install with great accuracy, to insure proper operation.
To the foregoing ends, I secure against the inner face of each of the rails 18, adjacent the compartment opening 14, an upright base plate 88, which extends above and parallel to said rail and partly below it. The plate 88 may be secured in place in any desired manner, as directly to the adjacent rail and to a suitable block that may be held at the upper end of the compartment 12, as against the inner face of the adjacent post 16. The plate 88 may be formed with an outwardly extending flange along its inner edge, one portion of which, 90, extends above the rail 18 and a lower portion of which, 92, extends below the rail 18 and serves as an additional stop for the outward movement of the platform carriage by engaging the pin 36 of the corresponding frame member 20. A regulator plate 96, which is of preferably roughly triangular shape, is pivoted, preferably at its apex, with its Wider end upwardly directed, on the plate 88, as at 94, opposite the center of the rail 18, in line with the pivots 62 and 64 of the bell cranks 58 and 60. Such pivot 94 may comprise the same pin that secures the base plate 88 to the rail 18. The regulator plate 96 is provided with an arcuate regulating slot, 98, extending inwardly from its outer edge, on a radius from the pivot 94 equal to the distance between the pivot 62 of the bell crank 58 to its pin 80. A corresponding slot is formed in the plate 88 on the same radius as the slot 98. It will be apparent that the lower edges of slots 98 and 100 form hearing or supporting surfaces.
The regulator plate 96 is provided, preferably above the curved slot 98, with a plurality of arcuately arranged spaced holes 102, and plate 88 is provided with a single aperture 104 in register with the arc defined by each of the holes 102, as the regulator plate is rotated on its pivot 94, so that aperture 104 will register with each of holes 102, as they move past the same, upon rotation.
The regulator plate 96 is engaged in selected adjusted position by means of a pin 106 at the end of a leaf spring 108, the other end of which is secured to the outer face of the plate 88, in position to have the pin 106 register and be normally held within the aperture 104. Preferably the said other end of the spring 108 may be secured to the plate 88 along spaced points, to ensure a firm and accurate positioning of the pin 106 and its return into the aperture 104, should it, for any reason be displaced therefrom.
It will be apparent that the pin 106, which is of a length greater than the thickness of the plate 88, will automatically, by the resilient action of spring 108, enter any selected one of the regulator holes 102 that may be positioned, by manual rotation of the regulator plate 96, in register with the aperture 104. It will also be apparent that the lock pin 106 may be readily displaced from engagement with the regulator plate 96 by merely pushing it out with the end of a pencil, or the like, from the hole 102 engaging it, partially starting the rotation of the regulator plate 96, to block return of the pin into such hole, and then withdrawing the pencil from such hole and continuing the rotation of the regulator plate until the next adjacent hole 102 is brought into register with the aperture 104.
In the present invention, I have also provided improved means for locking the platform in selected adjusted position. At least part of such means may be pre-assembled with the regulating means and mounted in place on the desk together with such regulating means. Fiuther, said locking means, at both side edges of the platform 22, are formed to be simultaneously operated for locking and unlocking, by a single movement of the hand. Additionally, the locking means of the present invention may be adjusted, after being mounted in place, to compensate for any irregularities or unevenness that commonly occur in a desk assembly after it is placed in use, or for changes or distontions in the desk frame due to unevenness in the supporting floor level or to the moving of the desk from place to place; such adjusting being effected without the need for complete or partial dismantling or disassembling of any part of the locking mechanism.
For the foregoing purposes, there is secured to each of the plates 88, on its inner face, preferably above the regulator plate 96, a lock plate lit), which is adjustably secured in place upon plate 88 by screws 112, that pass slotted openings 114, formed in plate 110 and engage in plate 88. Such slots 114 are arcuately shaped and arranged relative to one another topermit the shifting of the locking plate 110', within small limits, in an arcuate direction substantially parallel to the are followed by the plat-form during the upper part of its upward movement. The lock plate 110 is provided, on its inner face, with a preferably arcuatcly shaped and forwardly and downwardly directed thickened portion which may be in the form of a bar 116 that is provided with arcuately spaced recesses 118 arranged in its out-er surface, preferably corresponding in number to the holes 102 of the regulator plate 96.
Cooperating wt-ih the lock bars 116, are a pair of lock pins 120 which are slidably held, in suitable position, at the rear of the platform 22, transversely of the longitudinal axis thereof, one adjacent each side edge thereof, for movement in and out of overlapping position relative to the adjacent platform edge. The lock pins 120 may each be held in place by a plate 122 secured to the surface of the platform 22 and formed with an embossment 124 within which the pin 120 is reciprocably guided.
A toggle mechanism is provided for the simultaneous movement of both lock pins 120 in and out of the platform overhanging position. Such mechanism is shown to comprise a lever arm 126, which is pivotally mounted intermediate its ends and preferably closer to its inner end, on a plate 128 secured to the platform surface at the center of its width, with such inner lever end preferably overhanging part of the plate 128. The lever 126 is preferably pivotally secured, as at 130, to the underside of a struck-out embossment 132 formed at the forward end of the plate 128, whose sides serve as means for limiting the movement of the inner lever and from side to side. A link 134, pivotally connected .to the inner end of the lever 126 connects the same to one of the lock pins 125'; by a pivotal connection 136; and a second link 138, pivotally connected by one end to the lever 126 forwardly of its pivot 130, connects the same by its other end, by a pivotal connection 140 to the other of the lock pins 120.
It will be apparent that by the movement of the forward end of the lever 126, in one direction, as to the right, in FIG. 3, of the drawings, the lock pins 124) will be withdrawn from the overhanging position relative to the platform edges; whereas, movement of the forward end of the lever in the opposite direction, as indicated by the arrow in FIG. 3 of the drawings, will cause the lock pins 120 to move into platform overhanging position. Means are provided for tensioning the lever 126 in either of the two positions thereof. Such means may comprise a forked member 142, between whose jaws the interconnected ends of the lever 126 and link 134 are pivotally supported; such forked member 142 being provided with a relatively thin rear rod extension 144, whose free end is engaged through a hole formed in an upright flange 146 provided at the inner edge of plate 122. The rod extension 144 mounts an expansion spring 148 intermediate the forked member 142 and flange 146, and is of suitable length not to be withdrawn from its retaining hole in flange 146, within the limited side to side movement of the inner end of lever 126, thus providing an effective, easy to assemble toggle action for lever 126.
The lock pins 120 are so arranged on the platform 22 and the recesses 118 of the lock bar 116 are so arranged and spaced, that each adjusted position of the extended platform, as determined by the position of the inner end of the regulator slots 98, against which the pins engage, which, in turn, is determined by which of the holes 102 of the regulator plate 96 is engaged by the pin 106, will bring the ends of the lock pins 126 opposite one of the recesses 118 of the lock bar 116; so that movement of the lever handle 126 toward the left will push the lock pins outwardly, each to engage in one of the registering recesses 118 of the adjacent bar 116. Should, for any reason, ither one of the recesses 118 be out of alignment with the adjacent pin 12.0, it may readily be adjusted into alignment by the loosening of the plate 110, moving it to bring the recesses 118 in proper alignment with the corresponding recesses of the other plate 119, and then retightening the plate 11%) in place.
This completes the description of the improved platform adjusting and locking means for extensible typewriter supporting platforms of the present invention. It will be apparent that such adjusting and locking means are of relatively simple construction, easy to assemble and mount, accurate in performance and simple and easy and of maximum convenience to operate and use.
It will also be apparent that numerous modifications and variations in the adjusting and locking means of the present invention may be made by any one skilled in the art, in accordance with the principles of the invention hereinabove set forth and without the exercises of any inventive ingenuity. I desire, therefore, to be protected for any and all such modifications and variation that may be made within the spirit of the present invention and the scope of the claims hereto appended.
What I claim is:
1. In an extensible typewriter support for a desk, or the like, including a frame, a typewriter supporting platform, and means mounting said platform on said frame for arcuate upward movement, adjustable means for limiting the upward movement of said platform comprising a plate having an arcuate slot formed therein opening into an edge thereof, means pivotally supporting said plate on said frame, a pin on said platform mounting means engage able against the inner end of said slot upon the upward movement of said platform, means for adjustably positioning said slotted plate comprising a plurality of arcuately disposed spaced holes formed in said plate and a resiliently mounted member on said frame to the other side of said plate from said platform releasably engageable in a selected one of said holes upon rotation of said plate on the pivot thereof, said member engageable from the platform side of said plate for disengagement from said selected one of said holes.
2. The structure of claim 1, wherein said means pivotally mounting said slotted plate comprises a base plate secured on said desk frame and pivot means engaging said slotted plate on the" side of said base plate facing said platform, said'base plate having a curved slot in register with slot of said slotted plate.
3. The structure of claim 1, wherein said means pivotally mounting said slotted plate comprises a base plate secured on said desk frame and pivot means engaging said slotted plate against the side of said base plate facing said platform, said base plate having a curved slot in register with the slot of said slotted plate, and wherein said hole engaging member is mounted on a spring secured to said base plate to the other side of said slotted plate, and said base plate is formed with an aperture in register with the arc defined by said holes in said slotted plate as said slotted plate is rotated about its pivot, and said hole engaging member projects through said aperture.
4. In an extensible typewriter support for a desk, or the like, including a frame, a typewriter supporting platform, and means mounting said platform on said frame for arcuate upward movement, adjustable means for limiting the upward movement of said platform comprising a pair of plates each having an arcuate slot formed therein opening into an edge thereof, means pivotally supporting said plates each adjacent and parallel to one side of said platform, a pair of pins fixed on said platform mounting means, one to each side of said platform and engageable in the slot of the adjacent slotted plate upon the upward movement of said platform, and means for adjustably limiting the pivotal movement of each of said slotted plates to thereby adjust the inner end of the slot thereof for limiting the upward movement of said platform comprising a plurality of holes formed in each of said slotted plates in spaced arcuate arrangement thereon, and a resiliently supported member associated with each of said plates to the other side thereof from said platform automatically engageable and manually releasable from the platform side of said plate from a selected one of each of said holes upon rotation of said slotted plate about its pivot.
5. The structure of claim 4, wherein said means pivotally supporting said slotted plates comprises a base plate secured to said desk frame to each side of said platform, one of said slotted plates pivotally mounted on said base plate on the side thereof facing said platform, and wherein said resiliently supported member comprises a pin, a spring supporting said pin on the other side of said base plate, said base plate having an aperture formed therethrough in register with the arc defined by said holes upon rotation of said slotted plate on its pivot, said pin projecting through said aperture.
6. In a typewriter support for a desk, or the like, including a frame, a typewriter supporting platform and means mounting said platform on said frame for arcuate upward movement, adjustable means for limiting upward movement of said platform comprising a base plate mounted on said frame adjacent and parallel to a side of said platform, a regulator plate having an arcuate slot formed therein opening into an edge thereof pivotally supported on said base plate, a pin on the adjacent side of said platform supporting means engageable in the slot of said regulator plate upon the upward movement of said platform, means for adjustably limiting the pivotal movement of said regulator plate to thereby limit the upward movement of said platform, said limiting means comprising a plurality of holes formed in said regulator plate in spaced arcuate arrangement thereon, said base plate having an arcuate slot in register with said regulator plate slot and an aperture formed therein in register with the arc defined by said holes in said regulator plate upon movement of said regulator plate about its pivot, and a pin disposed in said aperture and extending therefrom, and means resiliently mounting said pin for automatically engaging within a selected one of said regulator plate holes upon rotation of said regulator plate about its pivot and manually displaceable therefrom, and cooperating means on said base plate and said platform for securing said platform in limited adjusted position comprising a bar mounted on said base plate, said bar having a plurality of recesses formed therein in spaced arcuate arrangement, a pin slidablymounted on said platform adjacent the edge thereof contiguous to said base plate for movement into and out of overhanging position relative to said platform edge, and spring-biased means for moving said pin into and out of edge overhanging position into and out of a selected one of said recesses in said bar, said recesses and said pin arranged to have said pin register with one of said recesses for each selected adjusted position of said regulator plate.
7. In a typewriter support for a desk, or the like, including a frame, a typewriter supporting platform and means mounting said platform on said frame for arcuate upward movement, adjustable means for limiting the arcuate upward movement of said platform comprising a base plate mounted on said desk adjacent each side of said platform, a regulator plate having an arcuate slot formed therein opening into an edge thereof pivotally supported on each of said base plates facing said platform, a pin on said platform mounting means on each side of said platform engageable in the arcuate slot of the adjacent of said regulator plates upon upward movement of said platform, means pivotally adjustably positioning each of said regulator plates to thereby limit the upward movement of said platform, said positioning means comprising a plurality of holes formed in said regulator plates in spaced arcuate arrangement thereon, an aperture formed in each of said base plates in register with the arc defined by the holes of the regulator plate mounted thereon upon its movement on its pivot, a member disposed in said aperture, resilient means engaging said member for automatically moving the same into a selected one of said holes upon alinement thereof with said aperture and manually releasable from said hole, and means securing said platform in selected adjusted position comprising a pair of lock pins, means slidably supporting each of said pins adjacent one of the opposed edges of said platform contiguous to said base plates, for movement in and out of edge overlapping position, a spring biased lever pivotally supported on said platform and links pivotally connecting said lever and each of said pins for simultaneous sliding of said pins in and out of platform overlapping position upon reciprocation of said lever, a bar mounted on each of said base plates, said bar having a plurlaity of recesses formed therein in arcuate arrangement thereon, said pins and said recesses arranged tohave said pins each in register with a separate one of said recesses of the adjacent bar for each of the selected adjusted positions of said regulator plate.
8. The structure of claim 7, wherein said bar is mounted on a plate having a plurality of elongated arcuate slots formed therein, said plate secured to said base plate by set screws passing through said slots and engaged in said base plate.
9. In an extensible typewriter support for a desk or the like, including a frame, a typewriter supporting platform, means mounting said platform on said frame for upward movement in an arcuate path, and means limiting the upward movement of said platform at a selected one of a plurality of levels, means for securing said platform at each said selected level comprising a pin, means on said platform for slidably supporting said pin in transverse relation to an edge of said platform for movement in and out of overlapping position relative to said edge, a body having a plurality of spaced recess formed therein in arcuate arrangement, said body supported on said frame adjacent said platform edge, said recesses arranged in an arc corresponding to the arc of movement of said platform, means, including a lever, engaging said pin for moving the same in and out of platform edge overlapping position, spring means bias tensioning said lever in each of said position of said pin, said pin and said recesses arranged to have said pin in register with one of said recesses for each adjusted level of said platform.
10. The structure of claim 9, wherein said body is adjustably mounted on said frame and means are provided for securing said body on said frame in selected ad- References Cited in the file of this patent justed position.
