BOOKMARK Julius C. Tam, 1035 W. 8th Place, Los Angeles 17, Calif. Filed Nov. 2, 1960, Ser. No. 66,858 1 Claim. (Cl. 116-119) This invention relates to bookmarks and it is a particular object of the invention to Provide a bookmark which may be sold separate from a book and contains within itself the means for applying it to a book.
Certain books, especially books bound for gifts, have a ribbon bookmark incorporated with the book when it is bound. Bound books generally however are manufactured without such a ribbon bookmark.
It is another object of the invention to provide a ribbon bookmark which includes means for applying it to a book after the latter has been bound.
A further object of the invention is to provide such a ribbon bookmark in which the means for securing the same to a book forms a suitable card on which the ribban of the mark may be wound and on which instructions may be printed for applying the bookmark.
The manner of accomplishing the foregoing objects as well as further objects and advantages will be made manifest in the following description taken in connection with I the accompanying drawings in which- FIG. 1 is a diagrammatic perspective view illustrating a preferred embodiment of the invention while the same is in the process of beingdisassembled for application to a book. This view also may correctly illustrate the invention during the assembly of the same in the manufacture thereof.
PEG. 2 is a view similar to FIG. 1 as showing said bookmark completely assembled as at the completion of the manufacture of the same.
FIG. 3 is a perspective view of a loose-bound book with the body of the same opened to form a space between said body and the spine'of the book and with the pressure adhesive strip of the bookmark of the invention lowered suspended on the ribbon of said bookmark 'ited States Patent "ice the adhesive 22 so as to adhere thereto. A flexible strip of sheet material 25 of the same size and shape as the strip 21 is applied thereto so as to temporarily cover pressure adhesive 22, the strip 25 however being of such a material as to be readily peelable from said pressure adhesive. Opposite ends of the strips 21 and 25 have notches 26 which are superimposed in matching relation when the two strips are held together by the pressure adhesive 22, and these notches act as guides for the ends of loops 27 formed by winding the ribbon 24 about the winding card 28 which is formed by the two strips 21 and 25 when thus assembled.
The terminal portion 29 of ribbon 24 may be tucked under the loops 27 of the ribbon wound on the card 28 to prevent the ribbon unwinding from said card.
Exposed marginal areas 30 of the strip 25 in the finally assembled bookmark 20 as shown in FIG. 2 may have imprinted thereon instructions for the application of the bookmark 20 to a book 10. This is accomplished in the following manner: Disengaging the terminal portion 29 of the ribbon 24, the latter is unwound from the windiug card 28, the book It) is opened as shown in FIG. 3,
into said space for the application of said bookmark to said book.
PEG. 4 is a vertical fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of'FlG. 3 of the book shown in this view after the said bookmark hasbeen applied thereto said bookmark.
Referring specifically to the drawings, it is to be noted that the invention is adapted to be applied to a loosebound book 10 the body 11 of which is formed by the pages of the book which are assembled in signatures sewed together along the back edges of the latter which are then covered by a cheeseclothsuper 12 and which is glued to coverboards 13 which are covered by a sheet of cloth 14 glued thereto, a central portion 15 .of said cloth being loose and referred to as the'spine of the book 10. When book it is opened a free space 16 is formed between the body 11 of the book and the spine 15. v
The invention is illustrated as preferably embodied in a bookmark 2%, FIG. 2 showing this in its finally manufactured form. The manufacture of this bookmark is shown in FIG. 1 as including the steps of providing a thereof coated with pressure adhesive material 22. An
the cover strip 25 is peeled from the strip 21 as shown in FIG. 1, and the latter strip, suspended on the ribbon 24 is lowered as shown in FIG. 3 into the space 16 with thepressure adhesive 22 preferably turned towards the super 12 of the book and the book is then closed and pressure applied to the spine 15 in the direction of arrows 32 in FIG. 4 so as to press the pressure adhesive coated surface of the strip 21 against the super 12 of the book 10 and cause the permanent adherence of the strip 21 to said super.
The ribbon 24 of the bookmark 20 is now free to be drawn downwardly from the head to the tail of the book it) between any pair of adjacent pages of the book to serve its normal function of bookmark.
- While only a single preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed herein, it is to be understood that various changes and modifications may be made in this without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appendedclaim.
The claim is:
A bookmark for association With a loose-bound book, the spine of which springsback from the book body to form a space therebetween when the book is opened, said bookmark comprising a strip of flexible sheet material coated with pressure adhesive on one face thereof;
' a cover strip of like shape applied tosaid face to cover end porti0n'23 of a fabric ribbon 24 is pressed against 7 said adhesive temporarily but readily peelable therefrom; and a ribbon, an end portion of which extends between said strips and adheres to said adhesive, said strips having notches in their opposite ends and uniting to form a relatively stiff, notched winding card for said ribbon, said ribbon being unwoundand said cover stripremoved and said pressure adhesive strip lowered suspended on said ribbon into said space of said book and compressed between said spine and said body to unite said strip with said book and anchor said ribbon to provide a bookmark for said book.
