(Cl. 230241) The present invention relates to improvements in a ladys handbag with a fan and warning light and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements hereinafter described and claimed.

Anobject of my invention is to provide a ladys handbag which has a screened opening in each side wall. A cylinder encloses a cooling fan and the cylinder ends communicate with the screened openings so that when the fan is operated, it will draw in air at one cylinder end and discharge it at the other cylinder end and through the screened opening associated with this latter end.

I provide a warning light for the handbag and this light is placed adjacent to a recess in one of the side walls of the bag that communicates with the opening in the same side wall. In fact the light and fan are mounted in a housing whose walls are formed of screening material and the housing is inserted as a unit into the interior of the bag and is supported by the bottom of the bag. The bottom of the housing is formed with receptacles for receiving batteries. The receptacles open toward the bottom of the bag and the bottom is provided with flaps that normally close the openings to the receptacles and conceal the batteries. The flaps can be opened for exposing the batteries and permitting their inspection or renewal.

A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described which is simple in construction and durable and efiicient for the purpose intended.

Other objeots and advantages will appear as the specification continues. The novel features of the invention will be set forth in the appended claim.

Drawings For a better understanding of my invention, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which:

FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a ladys handbag which has been altered to accommodate a cooling fan and a warning light;

FIGURE 2 is a view of the lower portion of the handbag shown in FIGURE 1, and shows the battery concealing flaps in open position so as to expose the batteries;

FIGURE 3 is a longitudinal section through the lower portion of the handbag and through the screen housing unit that contains the -air-cooling fan, warning light and batteries and is taken along the line III-III of FIG- URE 4;

FIGURE 4 is a transverse section through the handbag and screen housing and is taken along the line IVIV of FIGURE 3;

FIGURE 5 is a simple wiring diagram for the aircooling fan; and

FIGURE 6 is a simple wiring diagram for the warning flashing light.

While I have shown only the preferred form of my invention, it should be understood that various changes, or modifications, may be made within the scope of the annexed claims without departing from the spirit thereof.

Detailed Description In carrying out my invention, I provide a ladys handbag which is generally indicated at A in FIGURES l to 4 inclusive. The handbag has two side walls 1 and 2, and a bottom wall 3. The side wall 1 has an opening 4 therein, see FIGURE 1, and two recesses 5 and 6 communicate with the circular edge of the opening for a ptu pose presently to be described. The other side wall 2 has an opening 7 of the same size as the opening 4 and registering therewith. The openings 4 and 7 are placed near the bottom of the bag A.

A screen housing indicated generally at B, is mounted in the handbag A and is supported by the bottom 3 of the handbag. FIGURE 4 shows the screen housing B as having screen side walls 8 and 9 that parallel each other and contact with the inner surfaces of the side walls 1 and 2, respectively, of the handbag A. FIGURE 3 shows the screen housing B, provided with a top screen 10, that is in. the shape of an inverted U, with a battery receiving receptacle portion C at one end of one arm and a battery receiving receptacle portion D at the end of the other arm.

A screen partition 11, extends between the receptacles C and D, and cooperates with the U-shaped top screen 10 and side screens 8 and 9 to form a box-like compartment for receiving a screen cylinder E.

The screen cylinder E, has its ends secured to the screen side walls 8 and 9. The screen cylinder is slightly larger in diameter than the openings 4 and 7 in the handbag side walls 1 and "2 and the cylinder axis extends through the centers of the openings. An air cooling fan F with its operating electric motor G, is mounted in the screen cylinder E, and when the fan is operated, it will draw air into the cylinder through the opening 7 and will force the air out through the bag opening 4 for cooling purposes. Two dry cell batteries H are removably held by spring clips 12 in the receptacle C of the screen housing B. FIGURE 5 shows a simple wiring diagram between the dry cell batteries H, the fan motor G, and an electric switch I. The switch I can be placed on or in the bag A and I have shown the switch as being mounted on the side wall 1 of the handbag in FIGURES l and 2.

The same figures and FIGURE 3 show the receptacle or compartment C opening toward the bottom 3 of the handbag A. A flap K normally closes an opening 13 in the bag bottom 3, and a tongue 14 is. removably re ceived in a keeper 15 for maintaining the flap in closed position. When the tongue 14 is removed from the keeper 15, the flap K may be opened as shown in FIGURE 2. This will expose the two batteries H for inspection or removal and the substitution of new ones.

As I have already stated, the opening 4 in the side wall 1 of the handbag A, has the two recesses 5 and 6 communicating therewith. The screen housing B has a white light L mounted in it and in such a position as to register with the recess 5.

In the present case, the rotary switch M, is mounted at one of the hinges of the handbag frame N, and is elect-rically connected to the light L so that when the bag is opened, the switch M will close and will illuminate the light. The purpose of the light L is to use it for locating objects in the dark, such as a keyhole in the door of a home. The light L will show the keyhole so that the woman can insert the key and open the door. The light L and rotary switch M form no part of my present invention.

The other recess 6 that communicates with the opening 4 has the warning light P associated therewith, see FIGURES 1 and 2. The red warning light P is mounted in the screen housing B for protection. The screen side wall 8 covers the opening 4 and its recesses 5 and 6. The warning light P is connected to two dry cell batteries Q, which in turn are received in the compartment D. Spring clips '16 removably hold the batteries Q in place. FIGURE 6 shows a simple wiring diagram connecting the batteries Q to the warning light P when a switch R is closed. In the present case, the switch R is mounted adjacent to the switch I on the side wall 1 of the handbag A. A flasher S is placed in the electric circuit for the red Warning light P and will cause the light to intermittently flash when the switch R is closed.

In FIGURES 1, 2 and 3, I show the compartment D in the screen housing B, opening to the bottom of the housing. A flap T normally closes an opening 17 in the bottom 3 of the handbag and a tongue 18 is received in a keeper 19, for this purpose. When the flap T is opened, the two batteries Q may be inspected or renewed. The compartment or receptacle D also houses two other dry cell batteries U which are in electrical connection with the white light L and the rotary switch M.

FIGURE 3 shows the top U-shaped screen 10 covered with a lining 20 for the purpose of concealing the screen housing B. The interior portion of the handbag A disposed above the lining 19 can contain diflerent items. The operation and use of the air-cooling fan F and the intermittent red warning light P, have already been set forth. Further description therefore need not be given.

I claim:

The combination with a ladys hand bag including opposite side walls, each Wall having an opening therein aligned with the opening in the other wall; one of the side Walls having a recess communicating with the opening therein; of a housing having walls of screening material, said housing being receivable in the interior of the hand bag and having screen side walls disposed adjacent to the inner surfaces of the side walls of the hand bag; whereby the openings in the side walls of the hand bag will be covered by screening material; a cylinder made of screening material and disposed in the housing so that the ends of the cylinder will be connected to the housing side Walls and Will register with the openings in the side walls of the hand bag; an electric fan mounted in the cylinder; a warning light mounted in the housing and disposed adjacent to the recess in the hand bag side wall; a source of electric current mounted in the housing; and switches for connecting the fan and warning light to the source of current; whereby a rotation of the fan will draw in air through an opening in the side Wall of the hand bag and Will force the air out through the opening in the other side wall for cooling a person having the hand bag; and an illumination of the Warning light will cause the light rays therefrom to pass through the said recess in the hand bag side wall.
