(Cl. 39-5) The present invention relates to parking posts, the same being adaptable to prevent unauthorized persons from driving into a private parking space and occupying the same.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a suitable device which provides means blocking the entrance to a parking space.
A second object is the provision of a parking post which may be lowered from its normal vertical blocking position to a horizontal position which permits an automobile to be driven into the parking space.
A third object is the provision of a parking post which can be locked in an upright position and with the same providing a blockade to a parking space.
A fourth object is the provision of a parking post which is sturdily constructed and not easily damaged.
A further object is the provision of a parking post which is effective in its purpose and which is economical to manufacture and maintain.
Further objects and particular advantages of the in vention will become more apparent in the course of the following description, and that which is new will be pointed out in the appended claims.
The most satisfactory, and presently preferred manner of accomplishing the objects of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a front elevational view of the device and showing the same in its normal upright position.
FIGURE 2 is a left side elevation of the device, taken from line 2-2 of FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 3 is a left side elevation similar to that shown in FIGURE 2, but with the post being shown in its horizontal position and drawn to a reduced scale.
FIGURE 4 is a top plan view, taken from line 44 of FEGURE 1.
FEGURE 5 is an isometric view of the base member of the device.
FIGURE 6 is a detail vertical section through the device, with the same being taken on line 66' of FIG- URE 4.
FIGURE 7 is a detail horizontal section through the upper portion of the device, taken on line 77 of FIG- URE 6.
FIGURE 8 is a detail horizontal section through the lower portion of the device, taken on line 88 of FIG- URE 6.
FIGURE 9 is a detail section through the bumper member of the device, as taken on line 99 of FIG- URE 1.
Like characters of reference designate like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In order that the construction and the operation of the device may be more fully understood and appreciated, I will now take up a detailed description thereof in which the same will be more fully and comprehensively set forth.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, numerals 11 designate the base plate which is adapted to be rigidly secured to a floor or other suitable surface by means of anchor bolts 12 through the holes or apertures 13. The base plate 11 has an upstanding channel-shaped combined post receiver and brace 14 securely welded thereto. The rear side of member 14 has a latch-receiving aperhim 15 formed therethrough, the purpose of which will be more fully set forth hereinafter. The member 14 also has an aperture 16 formed through each of its forwardlyextending legs, the purpose of which will also be more fully set forth hereinafter.
The body 17 of the device is of elongated channel shape comprising a back and two sides, the lower portion of which is adapted to fit into the post receiver 14 and is pivotally positioned or connected therein by means of bolt or pin 18 with the same extending through apertures formed through the lower portions of the sides of the post, as more clearly shown in FIGURE 6.
A channel-shaped cover plate 19 is provided to close the front side of the post 17, with the side flanges of the cover plate 19 being turned rearwardly and fitting around the front edges of the post 17. The cover plate is removably secured through the sides of post 17 by means of screws 20.
A cap member 21 is provided to close the upper end of the post 17, and is hingedly secured thereto at the rear edge thereof by means of the hinge 22. A handle member 23 is secured to the normally rear side of the post and provides means for swinging the post from its upright position to its horizontal position and also to swing the post from its horizontal position to its upright position.
The post 17 has a lower plate 24 secured therein by welding or other suitable means and providing a mounting plate for latch case 25 which is secured thereto by means of screws 26, as shown in FIGURE 8, with the latch bolt 27 being adapted to engage the latch-receiving aperture 15 of the post receiver 14. A second plate 28 is secured in the post near the upper end thereof through which the cylinder lock 29 extends, and with the downwardly-extending tongue thereof being connected with the latch mechanism by means of the square bar 59.
A bumper member 31 is secured on the front surface of the cover plate 1? by means of a screw 32, as more clearly shown in FIGURE 9. The bumper member 31 provides means absorbing shock to the post should the post be dropped either accidentally or intentionally from its upright position to its horizontal position.
A weathering shield 33 is provided around the lower portion of the post and is located sli htly above the upper edge of the post receiver 14 and is for the purpose of preventing water from entering the top of the post receiver with there being a possibility of becoming frozen in freezing temperatures.
The device, as shown and described, is preferably formed of heavy gage steel to eliminate, insofar as possible, damage thereto should the same be accidentally run into by an object such as an automobile.
Should the post become damaged, the same can easily and quickly be replaced by removing the bolt or pin 18 and replacing the same after a new post has been placed into position.
Operation The post is set and suitably anchored in a parking space in a location which approximates the rear half of the automobile when the same is properly parked. The location of the post when so located properly prevents unauthorized parking in the space by blocking the entrance to the parking space. The authorized user of the parking space is provided with a key to the lock 29. Turning of the key in the lock operates the latch bolt 27 in the lock case 25 through the bar 30 and withdrawing the latch bolt 27 from the latch'receiving aperture 15 of the post receiver, after which the post can be pivoted on the bolt or pin 18 from its upright position to the horizontal positon, shown in FIGURE 3. After the post is in the horizontal position and resting on the bumper 31, as shown in FIGURE 3, the automobile can be driven into the parking space. When the automobile is removed from its parking space, the post can be raised trom its horizontal position, by means of handle 23, to its upright position, and with the latch bolt engaging the latchreceiving aperture 15, and with the rear side of the post bearing against the inner rear side of the post receiver 14.
Should the latching mechanism require replacement or servicing, the same is accessible by removing screws 20 and the front cover 19.
I desire that, while the presently preferred embodiment of the device is shown and described, minor changes may be made in the several parts and the assembly thereof, insofar as the changes therein may fall within the scope of the appended claims in their broadest form.
Having now shown and described the invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. A reserved parking post comprising a base, a post receiver rigidly secured to the base, a post having its lower end pivotally secured to the post receiver, a key-operated cylinder lock located in the upper end portion of the post, a latching device located in the lower end portion of the post and with a rod located within the post connecting the cylinder lock with the latching device, with the latch bolt or the latching device engaging a latchreceiving aperture formed through the wall of the post receiver, and with the key-operated cylinder lock providing means in the post for retracting the latch bolt from its engagement with the latch-receiving aperture of the post receiver.
2. In a reserved parking post, a base plate, a post receiver rigidly secured to the base plate, a post pivotally secured at its lower end to the post receiver, a cylinder lock located in the upper end of the post, a latch having a latch bolt located in the lower end of the post, a bar member extending between and secured to the cylinder lock and the latch, with the latch bolt being engageable with a latch bolt-receiving aperture formed in the post receiver, and with the latch bolt being operable by means of a key through the cylinder lock, the bar member, and the latch.
