No. 123,5ti 2 Claims. (Cl. 2&96-17) The present invention relates to an improved container and more particularly to an improved container for holding tools, such as drill bits.
Certain articles, such as drill bits, come in a plurality of sizes and are usually stored in upright holders which are provided with vertically directed openings into which each drill bit is stored.
However, it is difiicult to carry such drill bit holders around from place to place and it has been found that such holders sometimes tip and the drill bits spill out.
The present invention overcomes these disadvantages and has for one of its objects the provision of an improved holder for articles, such as drill bits.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a closed container for drill bits which can be easily carried from place to place.
Another object of the present invention is the PI'OVI- sion of an improved container for articles, such as drill bits, in which the articles will be prevented from rattling in the container during transport.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of a container for articles, such as drill bits which will automatically move the articles to an upright position when the cover is opened and which will automatically fold the articles down when the cover is closed.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of an improved container for articles, such as drill bits, which is inexpensive to manufacture and easy to handle.
Other and furth r objects of the invention will be obvious upon an understanding of the illustrative ernbodiment about to be described, or will be indicated in the appended claims, and various advantages not referred to herein will occur to one skilled in the art upon employment of the invention in practice.
A preferred embodiment of the invention has been chosen for purposes of illustration and description and is shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the specification, wherein:
FIG. l is a perspective View of a container made in accordance with the present invention shown in its closed position;
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the container shown in its open operative position;
FIG. 3 is a sectional view taken along line 33 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 4 is a sectional View taken along line 44 of FIG. 2;
FIG. 5 is a sectional view taken along line 55 of FIG. 4; and
FIG. 6 is a detailed sectional view showing the means in which the article holders are mounted on the container.
Referring to the drawings, the container 1 comprises a bottom wall 2, a front wall 3, a rear wall 4, and a pair of side walls 5. A cover portion 6 is pivotally connected to the rear wall 4 by a hinge 7 and is provided with a dependent flange 8 which fits around the outside of the side and front walls 5 and 3 of the container 1 when the cover 6 is closed. The front portion 9 of the flange 8 has a dimple 18 therein which cooperates with a dimple 11 on the front wall 3 of the container 1 to lock the cover 6 in its closed position.

An inner metal lining l5, preferable made of folded sheet metal, surrounds the inside surfaces of the side and front walls 5 and 3 of the container 1 and is held in place by 1ivets 16 extending into the side walls 5. The front portion 17 of the inner lining 15 is angled with respect to the front wall 3 of the container 1 for a purpose which will be more fully described hereinafter.
The article holders 19 for the drill bits 18 comprise a front plate 20 having backwardly extending side walls 21. A drill supporting platform 22 on which the drills rest extends rearwardly from the lower edge of the front plate and a rack 23 comprised of a pair of horizontal rearwardly extending plates 24 is mounted on the front plate 20. The plates 24 each have a pair of axially aligned holes into which each drill is positioned. The holes are graduated in size from the smallest to the largest and each hole is adapted to accommodate a drill of a particular size. When the drill bits are in place in the rack 23 they form an angled row due to their difference in length. The size number of the hole is preferably marked in the front plate 20 of the holder directly beneath the particular hole, as shown at 25 in FIG. 2, to give the user an easy guide to the particular size of the drill desired.
The lower edge of the front plate 20 of each of the holders is curled inwardly to form a hollow head 3% which is adapted to accommodate a rod 31. The rod 31 extends through the side walls 21 of the holders l9 and extends into an opening 32a in a dimple 32 formed in the inner lining 15, as shown in FIG. 6. This permits the holders 19 to pivot in relation to the inner sleeve 15 as will be more fully described hereinafter.
Three holders are shown in the drawings to hold drill bits of different sizes. The front holder 19a is the smallest one and is adapted to accommodate the smallest group of drill bits 18. Each of the other holders 1% and 19c are behind the front holder 1% and slightly above it so that the smallest group of drill bits are in the front and the largest group are in the back. The stepped arrangement of the holders 29a to permit the size markings 24 of each drill bit to be visible from the front. When the holders 1?, which are operatively connected to the cover 6 as will be more fully discussed hereinafter, are moved down by the cover 6, they will lie on top of each other as shown in FIG. 3.
Improved means are provided for lowering and raising the holders l9 simultaneously with the lowering and raising of the cover 6. The topmost holder 19c is operatively connected to the cover 6 by a link 39 which is mounted on a bracket 31 afiixed to the cover 6. The link 39 has an elongated slot 32 therein slideably connected to a pin 33 extending from the side wall 21 of the holder 190.
The three holders 19a to 190 are connected to each other by a pair of links 34 and 35. The link 34 is pivotally connected at its ends to top and center holders 19c and 19b and the link 35 is pivotally connected at its ends to bottom and central holders 1% and 1911.
With this structure, when the cover 6 is opened, the link 35 will lift the rear holder 19c upwardly around its pivot which in turn will lift the other two holders 1% and 1% around their respective pivots by means of the links 34 and 35. Then the cover is closed, the main link 30 will apply pressure to the topmost holder 19c and force it to pivot downwardly which in turn will apply pressure to the other holders 1% and 1% through the links 34 and 35 to force them to pivot downwardly. The topmost link 30 is slotted at 32 so that minor fluctuations of the cover 6 will not affect the position of the holders 19.
In the closed position, the drill bits which formed an angle due to their varying size lie close to the angled 3 portion 17 of the inner sleeve 15 to prevent the drill bits from rattling when the container is closed.
It will thus be seen that the present invention provides an improved container for articles, such as drill bits, which will automatically lift the drill bits to an upright position when the cover is opened and which automatically turns the bits downwardly into the container when the cover is closed.
As various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts herein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention and without sacrificing any of its advantages, it is to be understood that all matter herein is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim:
1. A drill bit container comprising side walls, a rear wall and a front wall, a cover portion pivotally mounted to the rear wall of said container, an inner lining having side portions adjacent the side Walls of said container and a front portion angled with respect to the front wall of the container, a plurality of inwardly extending dimples integral with the side portion of said lining, each of said dimples having an opening therein, a plurality of drill bit holders in said container, said drill bit holders having drill bit receiving openings, drill bits in said drill bit receiving openings, each of said drill bit holders being mounted on a rod, the rods extending into the openings in said dimples to permit the holders to pivot, said holders being operatively connected to each other in series by rigid links, the uppermost holder being operatively connected to the cover portion by a rigid link to enable the holders to pivot between an upright vertical position when the cover is opened and a folded horizontal position when said cover is closed.
2. An article container as claimed in claim 1, wherein said uppermost holder has a pin extending therefrom and said rigid link connecting the uppermost holder and the cover portion and has an elongated slot into which the pin extends.

Claims (1)

1. A DRILL BIT CONTAINER COMPRISING SIDE WALLS, A REAR WALL AND A FRONT WALL, A COVER PORTION PIVOTALLY MOUNTED TO THE REAR WALL OF SAID CONTAINER, AN INNER LINING HAVING SIDE PORTIONS ADJACENT THE SIDE WALLS OF SAID CONTAINER AND A FRONT PORTION ANGLED WITH RESPECT TO THE FRONT WALL OF THE CONTAINER, A PLURALITY OF INWARDLY EXTENDING DIMPLES INTEGRAL WITH THE SIDE PORTION OF SAID LINING, EACH OF SAID DIMPLES HAVING AN OPENING THEREIN, A PLURALITY OF DRILL BIT HOLDERS IN SAID CONTAINER, SAID DRILL BIT HOLDERS HAVING DRILL BIT RECEIVING OPENINGS, DRILL BITS IN SAID DRILL BIT RECEIVING OPENINGS, EACH OF SAID DRILL BIT HOLDERS BEING MOUNTED ON A ROD, THE RODS EXTENDING INTO THE OPENINGS IN SAID DIMPLES TO PERMIT THE HOLDERS TO PIVOT, SAID HOLDERS BEING OPERATIVELY CONNECTED TO EACH OTHER IN SERIES BY RIGID LINKS, THE UPPERMOST HOLDER BEING OPERATIVELY CONNECTED TO THE COVER PORTION BY A RIGID LINK TO ENABLE THE HOLDERS TO PIVOT BETWEEN AN UPRIGHT VERTICAL POSITION WHEN THE COVER IS OPENED AND A FOLDED HORIZONTAL POSITION WHEN SAID COVER IS CLOSED.
