GEORGE XV. BROVNE, OF N EVV YORK, N. Y.
POCK ET l-l OLSTER FOR PISTOLS.
EPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,292, dated December 16, 1884.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. Bnownn, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improved Pocket-Holster for Pistols; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and etc act description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a holster for pocketpistols.
In carrying pistols in the pocket difficulty is oftentimes experienced in getting hold of the weapon and in withdrawing it, because of its settling down into an inclined position within the pocket and because of its engagement with the flexible lining, and for the same reason the weapon is at times accidentally discharged in the act of its removal.
The object of my invention is to obviate this difficulty and danger; and it consists in constructing a holster of leather or other stiff material, which, in addition to the ordinary receptacle for the pistol adapted to the form thereof, is extended and widened by the addition thereto of a lateral comparatively rigid flange or web, whereby the holster in its external configuration is made to conform to the shape of the pocket, so as to fit closely therein, presenting thereby all the advantages of an ordinary holster in securing and protecting the pistol, in addition to the advantages of a pocket for the pistol in the pantaloons.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation illustrating my improved pocketholster in use; Fig. 2, a perspective view, on an enlarged scale, of the holster removed from the pocket; and Fig. 3, an elevation on a similar scale, illustrating a modification in its construction.
A represents the holster, constructed by doubling a piece of leather or other stiff inaterial upon itself and stitching down the folds together along an irregular line, as at, b 0, thereby forming a receptacle, D, (see Fig. 2,) which approximates in its internal conformation to the shape of a pistol, this mode of con structing the holster being one customarily followed in the manufacture of holsters for the saddle or the belt.
In accordance with my invention, the ma terial of the holster is extended out laterally beyond the line Z) c, to constitute a wide, flat, stiff flange or web, E, which is so fashioned as that, in combination with the portion inclosing the receptacle D, an outline is obtained for the entire holster, which shall conform closely to the shape of the hippocket in apair of pantaloons, F, in which it is to be inserted. The device thus serves as a stiff, water-proof, detachable lining for the pocket in the form of a holster for the pistol, and which is adapted completely to protect it against injury or accident, as well as from moisture, and which facilitates the ready withdrawal of the weapon from the pocket as emergency may require without the risk of its catching or becoming entangled therein, as is the case when the pistol is placed directly in the pantaloons-pocket.
Although the flange or lateral web 1*] so adapts the holster ,to the pocket as to prevent its movement therein and secures its close retention in place, the improved holster is so far detachable as that it may be readily re moved from one pocket to another when the pantaloons are changed.
In the modification illustrated in Fig. 3, the holster is constructed of two pieces of leather, G G, stitched together, instead of a single piece folded over, the stitching being made to produce the proper receptacle for the pistol between the two thicknesses of leather, and to stiffen the lateral flange E. This form of construction permits also the combination, with the wide flange E upon the one side of the receptacle D, of a similar narrower flange, H, on the opposite side thereof, whose function is the same as that of the flange E'viz., to confine the holster within the pantaloonspocket when inserted therein.
I contemplate as an equivalent for the web or flange E, made in one piece with the holster, the substitution of a separate lateral flange or frame secured to the holster, and which may be made of wire or a light sheet of metal.
I claim as my invention- The pocket-holster constructed with a pistol-receptacle, D, and stiff lateral Web or flange E whereby the holster is adapted for con- T finement in a pantaloons-pocket, substantially GEORGE 5 in the manner and for the purpose herein set Witnesses:
