Description

(No Model.) I 0. 0. YALE.
LAST.
No. 309,677. Patented Dec. 23, 1884.
fittest. Inventor llrrnn Srnrns PATENT rrrcn.
CHARLES O. YALE, OF ROME, NElV YORK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,677, dated December 23, 1884:.
Application filed January 8, 1854. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES O. YALE, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Rome, county of Oneida, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lasts for the Manufacture of Boots and Shoes thereon, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The object of my invention, primarily, is to furnish a last, to be used in the manufacture of boots and shoes, that -may be contracted, and thereby made easy to withdraw from the boot or shoe, also thereby securing uniformity of size and style to the boot or shoe made thereon.
To this end the invention consists in the arrangement of the different parts of the last, as shown in drawings furnished herewith, and for convenience of description like letters in the various drawings will stand for like parts of each last.
The last may be cast of any metal, but preferably of gray iron or malleable iron.
Figure 1 shows a last set up and ready for use. A A A are the front, bottom, and back of the last. B is the upper front of the last, which is secured in its position by bcntpin (I, entered into hole Z), provided at the end of slot c,when the upper part of last 13 is pressed forward. Pin (Z is provided with a square shoulder and slides in groove 0, which guides the forward part of the upper part of the last B. The back parts of B and A are provided with tongues fff, that pass into grooves g g and are held in position. At h'h are webs extending across from side to side of the upper part, B, which are pierced with holes at 7 to receive pin a, which is held in place thereby. The last thus prepared is in condition for shaping and manufacturing boots and shoes thereon.
Fig. 2 shows the last with pin a withdrawn from hole Z up into slot 0, and the tongues ff f introduced into the grooves gg produced by moving the upper part of last B, guided at e by pin (1, into grooves g g in back part of last A. The last when in this condition is ready to be withdrawn from boot or shoe.
Fig. 3 is a plan view drawn across line X X of Fig. 1, and shows the slot 0 and cross-section of pin a in the hole I) at the back part of the last. At the front part 6 represents the forward guiding-slot with a cross section of pin (Z in it.
Fig. 4 shows a cross-section of forward slot, 6, at 0 0, Fig. 3, broken out to show the relation of pin (Z to slot 0.
It will be seen in Fig. 1 that when 13 is pressed forward and pin a is pressed down into hole I) the last is then incondition for forming boots and shoes thereon. When pin a is withdrawn from the hole b up into slot 0, (see Fig. 2,) the pin a acts as a guide in slot 0, and when the tongues fff move into the grooves g g 5/, by drawing B backward by the ring Y, the last is then ready for withdrawal from the boot or shoe.
Having thus described my invention, what- I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent 1s- 1. The bottom portion of last A A A, provided with a movable part, B, in combination with the fastening device consisting of the bent pin a, as shown and described.
2. The bottom part of last A A A, with movable part B, and fastening-pin a, in c0111- bination with tongues fff and grooves g r g, as shown and described.
The bottom part of last A A A and upper part, B, in combination with pin (1 and slot 0, as shown and described.
4. The bottom part of last A A A, with upper part, B, in combination with pin a, groove 0, with hole b, pin (2, groove e, tongues f f f, and slots y g 1 as shown and described.
CHARLES 0.. YALE. W'itnesses:
P. F. HUGMUND, WM. H. Games.
