Description
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MOSES KLEEMAN, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
GLASS-CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 30,973, dated December 18, 1860.
To all lwhom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, MosEs KLEEMAN, of the cityl of Columbus, Franklin county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Setting Diamonds for Cutting Glass, Millstones, &c.; and I do hereby describe and ascertain the same referring to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l, represents the ordinary mode of setting diamonds for cutting glass &c. Fig. 2 represents the new plan.
Great difhcultv has been experienced in the plans heretofore adopted in setting diamonds for the rough work &c. They are now applied to such as dressing mill stones and even in glass cutting the setting was often found imperfect. To remedy these difficulties and defects I have devised my new setting, which is constructed as follows: I form a suitable stock or block of steel or other suitable metal as at a, Figs. 1 2, in the end of which I make a socket or hole b of the exact form of the diamond that is to be set in that part which is to be embedded in said socket. v I then generally forni recesses for the cap t0 lit in the sides of said stock, as at c but this in some instances may be omittedover the end of the stock a I fit a cap of brass or other suitable metal d having a hole through it opposite the socket through which the point of the diamond projects the cap tightly litting around the diamond and securely holding it in place. The cap is fastened down by` one or more rivets the holes through the cap and stock being draw-bored so as to draw the cap down tight and fast. A
By the above m-ethod I have a firm and permanent fastening that supports the diamond perfectly and will not yield to the rough handling to which it has usually to be subjected.
l is the handle.
Having thus fully described my improved mode of setting diamonds, what I claim as new and for which I desire Letters Patent is- The combination of the socket and cap substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
MOSES KLEEMAN Witnesses S. AMBURGH, A. BRUGKMANN.
