SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,22, dated January 6, 1885.

To aZZ whom it'mag concern Be it known that I, Josmrr M. READ, of Everett, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dampers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, ref erence being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in explaining its nature.
Figure 1 represents the application of my invention to a cooking-stove; Fig. 2 shows its application to a heating-stove; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of both sections of the damperbox, adapted to be used between-two lengths of funnel 5 Fig. 4 is a vertical central section of the device shown in Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a plan view thereof, and Fig. 6 is a plan view of the damper and one section of the damperbox. Fig. 7 represents, in vertical section, my invention when used as a combined pipecoupling and damper.
This invention relates to the class of dampers known as cold-air regulators, and it embraces a novel construction of damper and damper-box,whereby the latter when used on a stove may be also used for receiving and holding the end of a stove pipe or funnel, and when not so used may form a coupling for uniting two sections of pipe.
In the drawings, Figs. 1 and 2 show the construction as applied to a stove; and Figs. 3 and 4 the construction as applied to a funnel-coupling.
The damper box or coupling when applied to a stove will comprise the section a, which, preferably, is cast with the top or side plate of the stove, having the extension to, flange 0t, and lip a", for the reception of the upper section, I), of the box. The extension to has the holes a, as represented in Fig. 6, and when used for a pipe-coupling this under section will be shaped as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and will be in all respects like that above described, with the exception that it has the projecting stays or guides, hereinafter referred to as 0*. The other section, b, of the box is the same, whether used in connection with a stove or a portion of a pipe-coupling. Its lower edge, 0, is adapted to fit upon the flange a within the lip a of the section a. It has i the extension or hood 0, which fits and covers the extension at of the other section, the shoulder 0 collar 0, and stays or guides 0*. The
damper D is arranged to slide between the L two portions of the box and their extensions, and the screw (1, which fastens the two portions of the box together, passes through a slot, (2, in the damper and acts as a stop in preventing its withdrawal on its outward movement. The upper surface of the extension a and of the flange a acts as a support for the damper when the box is in a vertical position; but when the box is in a horizontal position then the damper is supported by both of the extensions and between the flange a and the lugs or ribs (Z d.
It will be observed that the extension 0 of the section b is rounded out or hood-shaped, so that, acting in connection with the openings a of the lower extension, a passage, E, connecting the outer air with the upper portion of the box, is formed. And it will be seen that the damper is so shaped upon its outer edge that when it is closed it uncovers these openings a" and allows free passage of the outer air through passage E into the upper or outer part of the box. It will also be observed that when the damper is in this po sition the main escapepassage is throttled,
but not entirely closed, and this result is provided by forming the inner end, (1, of the damper as represented in Fig. 6. This construction is desirable in order to permit a sufficient flue-space for the escape of gases through the direct escape-channel.
It will be observed that when the damper is partly or entirely drawn out the air-inlets or openings a are covered by it, and at the same time the direct port is partly or entirely opened, as the case may be. It will be seen that the stays or guides c not only act as guides in directing the proper placing of the funnel upon the collar, but they also act to steady the collar when in place, and are as efficient for that purpose as though the collar itself extended the same distance, and I therefore obtain not only the advantages of the guides, but also the advantages of the increased bearing for the stove-pipe, and that without increasing the weight of metal, because by forming the guides as shown I am enabled to make the collar portion of less width than is ordinarily the case. be noticed that when the box is used as a pipe-coupling the portion a has the collar f for the reception of the pipe, and that the rim or flange (6 acts as a shoulder for the pipe, and that I provide it with the stays or guides c".
The advantages of this invention arise from the cheapness and simplicity of the construction and the ease and facility with which it can be placed in position, especially when it is desired to place a damper between two sections of pipe. Of course in this last-named use, if desired, the cold air feature of the damper may be dispensed with without inter fering with the spirit of this portion of my invention.
The two sections of the box are fastened together by means of the bolt 'g, which passes through a hole in the lug g',cast on the box a, which lug shuts into a recess formed by projecting the flange a outward and the bolt (1, above spoken of; but I do not confine myself to this specific method of fastening the two parts together, as I may use any other device for so fastening.
I am aware of the Patents No. 154,039, dated August 11, 1874, to Hagar; No. 60,453, dated December 11, 1866, to \Vilson; No. 83,139, dated October 20, 1868, to Deily; but as they do not show or describe a damper-box provided with an extension containing a passage to the outer air adapted to be closed upon the outward movement of the damper, and to be opened upon the inward movement of the damper, I consider that they do not describe the essential features of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. The combination, in a damper, of a box consisting of the sections a b, one of which has the extension a,provided with an opening or openings, (0, and the other of which has the It will also rounded hood or extension 0, covering the same, and in connection with the opening or openings a forming the passage E, and the damper D, all substantially as and for the purposes described.

3. A stove-pipe coupling having the pipe collars c c and f, and the stays or guides a projecting from the edges of the collars and adapted to center, support, and connect the ends of the pipes, all substantially as and for the purposes described.

5. The combination of the two sections a b, one of which has the flange (6 lip a, and the extension a, provided with the opening or openings a", and the other of which fits upon the first section and has an extension or hood curved to provide a lateral cover to the extension a, and to form in connection with the opening or openings at a passage, E, and the damper D, all. substantially as and for the purposes described.
6. The combination of the flange a the lugs d d, the extension a c, forming the passage E, and the damper D, all substantially as and for the purposes described.
7. The combination, in a cold-air regulator, of the dam per-box having the cold-air passage or inlet E, and the sliding damper D, shaped to cover said opening when drawn out and to open the same when closed or nearly closed, all substantially as and for the purposes described.
