SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 312,413, dated February 17, 1885.

.To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY P. WATTS, of Lynchburg, in the county of Campbell and State of Virginia, have invented an Improved Fan Attachment for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.

The object of the invention is to render practical and free from objection the fan attachment described in Patent No. 234,818, of which I am part owner. To this attachment many practical objections have been made, and these I have succeeded in overcoming by my improvements, which will be first hereinafter described, and then pointed out in the claims- Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective View of a sewing-machine with my invention attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a view in elevation and perspective of the attachment itself. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the attachment when folded up for transportation or being packed away. Fig. 4 is a detail View of the fan-holder. Fig. 5 is a detail View in longitudinal section of the clamp by which the pitman is adjustably secured to the sewing-machine treadle.

In the drawings, A represents a sewing machine table, provided with the usual pivoted treadle, B, by which foot-power is applied to its mechanism. In this treadle I make a number of holes, b, in a longitudinal row, so that in either of them may be secured a headed screw, 0, by a subjacent thumb-nut, c. This holds down a plate, D, which has bottom concavities, d d, which fit over the wire E. The latter has open ends e e, which enable it to be manipulated more easily, the bends e, and the coil 6 the latter being a bearing for the pivot f of the wire F, which is also coiled at f to form a bearing for the wire G. Thus it will be perceived that the parts F G form a jointed pitman.

H is a wire fan-holder, which has the coiled bearing h for the pivot g, and an intermediate fulcrum-bearing, h, for pin j on the vertical post J, and the coiled socket h for holding a fan. This post J is connected with the sew ing-machine table A by a clip, K, which carries an apertured guidestud, 7a, through which the wire G reciprocates, but not so as to strike the joint f g.

L is a screw, which works through a nut table on the side opposite to that on which the operator sits, so that the latter while working the machine may, without any palpable increase of labor, also operate the fan.

It will be perceivedthat this fan attachment is specially adapted to use with sewingmachines, and may be easily attached to and detached from them, and is very simple and little liable to get out of order, and, withal, may be manufactured at a trifling expense. It has been practically tested on more than twenty-five machines, and has given great satisfaction on all of them.

Having thus described all that is necessary to a full understanding of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a fan attachment for sewing-machines, a fan-holder consisting of a wire coiled at each end to form a bearing. h, and a socket, h", for holding the fan, and coiled at h intermediately between the bearing and socket to form a fulcrum-bearing,substantially as shown and described.

2. Inafan attachment for sewing-machines, the combination of the wire E, for attachment to the treadle, the pitman F G, having bearings e h, the fan-holder H, having a fulcrumbearing, h, and fan-socl et h", and the fulcrum-post J, having a clip, K, provided with the apertured stud k, through which the pitman operates, the said fan-holder being connected with the fulcrum-post, as shown, and for the purpose set forth.

3. In a fan attachment for sewing-machines, the combination, with the jointed pitman F G, which operates the fan-holder, of the wire E, having the bends e and bearing 6', to adapt it to be used for connecting said pitman to the treadle, substantially as shown and described.

4. The combination, in a fan attachment for sewing-machines, of a plate, D, concaved at d d, a headed screw, G, and a thumb-nut, 0, whereby the wire E may be securedto the treadle through the holes 22, substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
