UNITE STATES PATENT OFFIC EDMUND N. HATCHER, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND ANDREW C. EMMICK, OF SAME PLACE.
CLIP FOR VEHICLE-AXLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 312,465, dated February 17, 1885.
Application filed October 30, 1884. (No model.)
To (ZZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDMUND N. HATOHER, of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Combined Hood and Clip for Axle- Skeins, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Heretofore aXle-skeins have been secured in place by bolts put through the axle and the skein, which necessitates the punching or boring of the skein-body, and consequently weakening it whereit should be strongest. Clips are also employed for the same purpose; but being forged out from round iron they are (lifificult to fit and not of sufficientstrength.
My invention consists in a clip the body or strap portion of which is made of sheet metal of any suitable thickness, and also of a size and form to serve both as a hood that excludes water and dirt from beneath the skein-body, and to sustain the collar-band against endwise pressure. To the body the bolts for the clipbar are welded, the device forming a combined hood and clip.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figurel is a side view of an axle-end with a skein-band and hood-clip applied. Fig. 2 is a face View of the hood-blank before bending; and Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the hood clip.
A in Fig. l is the wooden axle. B is the skein; C, the collar-band shrunk on the skein, and D is the combined hood and clip, having an upper or outer concaved and inner convexed surface, and provided with the bolts a, that receive the clip-bar E.
The body I) of the hood-clip is formed of sheet-metal cut out to the form required and then bent. The form of blank is shown in Fig. 2,with one lug or bolt, a, attached. The
lugs are bars of round metal welded to the ends of the blank and then threaded. The 5 blank of this form, by bending, comes readily to the shape for fitting upon the axle and skein,
so that its outer end comes securely against the collar-band, thereby preventing the band from being forced from its posit-ion by the pressure of the wheelhub, and the body b of the hood, extending upon the axle, gives additional strength where needed, besides preventing Water, sand, &c., from getting beneath the skein-body. 5
It is evident that this hood-clip may be made of sheet metal of any suitable thickness, size, and strength. The ordinary clips, being forged from round bars, are weakened in the strap portions, are difficult to fit, and have not the 6c combined functions of my device.
In my former patent, wherein the collarband is made integral with the hood, endwise movement of the collarband, together with said hood, is not as effectually prevented as where the collar-band is shrunk on the axleskein, as is the case in the present invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. The combined hood andclip formed from sheet metal with-an upper or outer concavity and an inner convexity, and with clip boltsor studs at its lower ends or edges, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth. 7 5
2. The combined hood and clip formed with an upper or outer concavity and an inner couveXity, and with clip bolts or studs at its lower ends or edges, in combination with the skein or sleeve with the collar-band shrunk thereon, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
EDMUND N. HATCHER.
