Description

April 28, 1964 D. J. DEITCH 3,130,504
DETACHABLE SHOE HEEL Filed Feb. 25, 1963 FIG. 5.
\W\ \w\\- /////XV/ 15 I INVENTOR David J. Deifch United States Patent 3,13as04 DETACPABLE SHOE HEEL David J. Deitch, 6 E. 7th St, Wilmington 1, Del.; Bernard Deitch and Philip Qohen, executors of said David .3. Deiteh, decemed Filed Feb. 25, 1953, Ser. No. 251L671 4 (Ilaims. (*Cl. 36-36) The instant invention relates to shoes, and more particularly to a detachable heel therefor, for replacement of a worn heel with a new one.
One of the primary objects of the invention is the provision of a heel detachably secured to a shoe upper by means of mating plates and fasteners, one of the plates being attached to the rear portion of the shoe sole internally thereof and the other embedded in the heel.
Yet a further aim is the making of a detachable heel [for a shoe upper in which mating plates and separable fasteners are employed; and in which the arrangement is such that the fasteners are not subject to wear; and in which separation or connection of the heel is made from within the shoe.
A still further purpose is the making of a detachable heel for a shoe employing mating plates and separable fasteners especially adapted for use with the detachable sole of applicants Patent No. 3,073,042 issued January 15, 1963, although not by any means limited thereto.
The above and other aims and objects will be apparent from the detailed description hereinafiter appearing when taken in conjunction with the appended drawing forming a part hereof to which reference is now made and in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a sole plate showing an attaching screw;
FIG. 2 is a side elevational exploded view showing the plate of FIG. 1 in position in the shoe and a heel, having a mating plate, in attaching position;
FIG. 3 is a bottom plan view of the rear portion of a shoe sole showing the manner in which the sole plate is secured thereto;
FIG. 4 is an exploded perspective view showing how a plate is assembled for sandwich molding within the heel;
1G. 5 is a view, on a larger scale, of the rear portion of a shoe showing in section the separable heel in attached or wearing condition; and
FIG. 6 is a sectional view, also on a larger scale, showing a detail of the separable fastening means.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, and FIGS. 1, 2 and 3 thereof, the reference character C designates the rear upper port-ion of a conventional shoe such as may be worn by men, women and children, and F a unitary plate member secured interiorly of the rear upper shoe portion C in a manner now to be described. Turning first to the plate member F, it will be noted that it comprises an annular flat portion lil having a central opening 11 and a plurality of spaced, depending hollow, cylindrical sleeves l2. It will further be seen that plate member 'F is complementary in shape to the rear upper shoe portion, that is to say, also complementary in shape to the heel to be secured thereto; and while the plate may be made of thin metal, it is preferably cast as a structurally integral unit of a thermosetting resin The leather material or the like of which rear upper shoe pontion C is formed is folded inwardly as at 13, FIG. 3, to form a flanged edge which is provided with a series of apertures 14 corresponding in number to sleeves 12 and through which the latter project. Before assembly, the contacting surfaces of the flange l3 and flat plate portion are coated with an adhesive so that upon drying there is a firm bond between inturned leather flange 13 and the plate member F.
The detachable heel member H, shown in exploded view in FIG. 4-, comprises upper and lower heel sections 15 and 15a, respectively, of rubber or the like, between which heel plate member M is sandwiched. The latter comprises an annular portion 16 defining an opening 17. A plurality of spaced cylindrical sleeve members 18 project upwardly from annular portion 13, each sleeve member 18 being internally threaded as at 19. Plate member M is complementary in shape to plate F, is similarly formed as a structurally integral unit from a thermosetting resin and is held by molding between heel portions 15 and 15a to be sandwiched therein with sleeve members 18 protruding throu h openings 26 in the upper heel member 15. In FIG. 4, the heel H with plate M is shown prior to molding assembly and after assembly in the lower portion of FIG. 2. As will be noted, sleeves 18 of plate M are aligned with sleeves 12 of plate F, each sleeve 13 being received within a sleeve 12 in male-female relationship.
The reference numeral 25, FIG. 5, designates the rear portion of the detachable outer sole shown in applicants Patent 3,073,042 in the lowermost part of FIG. 1 thereof to the left of the dash line. This rear portion has a series of spaced openings 26 through which sleeves 12 project, said portion 25 filling the space 27 shown in FIG. 6. An inner sole is designated at 23, while reference numerals 2.9 and 3% indicate a threaded fastener and lock washer, respectively, for each internally threaded sleeve 18.
The manner of attaching a heel member H to the rear upper shoe portion C will now be set out. The parts are aligned as in FIG. 2 and sleeves 18 inserted into sleeves 12 with the latter inserted in apertures of sole section 25, that is apertures 25, as will be seen in FIG. 5. Inner sole member 28 is turned back and a detachable fastener comprising a screw and washer assembly 29 and Ell, is brought into threaded engagement with an internally threaded surface 19 of each sleeve 18 until all the parts are in tight abutting relationship, as in FIG. 5. Then the inner sole is turned back to cover the detachable fasteners, as shown, and the shoe is ready to be worn. When it is desired to replace the heel, it is only necessary to reverse the above procedure.
By providing a separate plate member for both the rear portion of the sole and heel, a particularly rugged structure is attained. Furthermore, by having a series of interfitting sleeves spaced peripherally about the assembly, the heel is uniformly held in place at each section of the union with the counter to form a rigid and longw-earing construction.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a shoe having a sole including a heel portion and an upper, a first plate interiorly of the shoe upper and secured to the heel portion of the sole, a plurality of spaced integral sleeves projecting downwardly from the plate through said sole heel portion, a detachable heel having a second plate sandwiched therewithin, a plurality of spaced integral sleeves projecting upwardly from said second plate through said detachable heel, said plates being complementary in shape and the sleeves of the respective plates being each in male-female relationship, and means for detachably holding said sleeves in said relationship.
2. The structure of claim 1, in which the means for securing the first plate to the heel portion of the sole comprises an inturned flange of the shoe uppe said flange having a series of apertures through which the sleeves of the first plate downwardly project.
3. The structure of claim 2, and adhesive means binding said inturned flange to said first plate.
4. The structure of claim 3, in which the upwardly projecting sleeves of said second plate are internally threaded and in which said detachable holding means comprises screws threadedly engaging said last-mentioned sleeves.
