Description

June 2, 1964 R. c. LEVITE L 3,135,001
HAIRBRUSH HAVING A MULTI-POSITION HANDLE Filed June 12, 1961 INVENTOR ROBERT C. LEVITE ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,135,001 EKAERBRUSH HAVING A MULTI-PGSETIGN HANDLE Robert C. Levite, Ashby Road, Ashburnham, Mass. Filed lune 12, 1961, Ser. No. 116,517 1 Claim. (Cl. 15-144) This invention relates to a new and improved multiple use hairdressers hairbrush and provides a single brush head with a movable handle, said handle being useful for using the brush by wielding the same at either end thereof, i.e., the handle being applied to either end of the head of the brush selectively.
Another object of the present invention resides in the provision of a brush as aforesaid having a certain particular special bristle conformation including stifi coarse nylon or synthetic combing bristles arranged along one edge of the head of the brush and the opposite edge of the head being provided with smooth, fine bristles for a brushing action, and there being intermediate shorter bristles in combination with a removable handle whereby the operator may reposition the handle with respect to the head of the brush so as to utilize the same with either the stiff, coarse combing bristles initiating the stroke with the 3,135,001 Patented June 2, 1964 movable. This is accomplished by having the handle 50 provided with an elongated bar 52 and the brush head 10 with an elongated socket to receive the same as at 56. There are recesses 58 conjoim'ng the socket 56 to receive 5 looks 60 which can be in the form of pop-up spring desmoothing fine bristles terminating the stroke, or viceversa, with the smoothing bristles initiating the stroke and the coarser bristles terminating it; and the provision of a brush with a movable handle as aforesaid which can be used by right or left-handed persons in either initiating the stroke with the coarse bristles or the smooth bristles, etc.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which- FIG. 1 is an end view showing one form of the invention;
FIG. 2 is a reduced edge view thereof with an alternatice position of the handle shown in dotted lines;
FIG. 3 is a view on an enlarged scale, part being in section, and
FIG. 4 is a longitudinal section on line 4-4 of FIG. 3.
In carrying out the present invention, there is provided first a brush back or head 10. This brush back has a plurality of bristles arranged in longitudinal rows thereon. I prefer to provide rows 12 and 14 with relatively stifi, coarse, nylon combing bristles, these being arranged at one edge of the head 10. At the opposite edge thereof there is a single row 16 of fine flexible brushing bristles of fine natural bristle backed up by a row of relatively coarse natural boar bristle 18. Rows 12, 14, 16 and 18 are all substantially the same length, and intermediate thereof there are two rows 20 and 22 of nylon short stiff bristles and two rows of short stiflf boar bristles which are indicated at 24 and 26.
The handle 50 for the brush head is completely revices or the like. When the bar 52 is in the position shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, the brush is locked in position but can be removed simply by manual force, depressing the spring edge 60. Then it can be entered in at the opposite end of the brush head as at 62. FIG. 2 shows the handle at either end in full and dotted lines.
Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, otherwise than as set forth in the claim, but What I claim is:
A brush comprising an elongated head, a series of bristles on said head, one series of bristles being adjacent an edge of the brush head, said bristles being relatively stiff and coarse, another row of bristles spaced from the first-named row of bristles and appearing at the opposite edge of the brush head, said second-named bristles being relatively soft for utilization as brushing bristles, rows of shorter bristles intermediate said first and second-named rows of bristles, said shorter bristles appearing centrally of said brush head, and
a handle including a bar, said handle being movable from one end of the brush head to the other whereby the stitr' bristles may appear at the initiation of the stroke, or selectively the softer bristles may appear in this position when the handle is reversed from one end of the brush head to the other, and means temporarily holding the handle bar in the brush head at either end of the brush head, said means including a bar receiving passage extending end-to-end of the brush head, a generally central recess in the brush head intermediate the ends of the passage, and a spring on the bar, said spring normally extending laterally from the bar but being compressible for insertion into the passage for expansion in the recess, a push or pull on the bar relative to the passage serving to tend to flatten the spring therein so that the bar is insertable into the passage or selectively withdrawn therefrom.
