Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OrEIcE.-4
ISAAC H. HOBBS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND VILLIAM II. CLARKE, OF SAIWIE PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN RULING-GUIDES FOR FOUNTAIN-PENS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 31,515, dated February 19,1861.
To all whom, t may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISAAC I-I. HOBBS, of the city of Philadelphia and State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented a new and useful Ruling-Guide forFountain-Pens; and I do hereby declare that the following' is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the saine, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective representation of a connnon writing-pen holder and pen (viewed from the left side) with the invention applied; Fig. 2, a like representation of the under side; Fig. 3, a like representation of the upper side of the same; and Fig. 4, a like representation of the guide and fountain-plate or tongue detached.
Like letters, when on the different figures, indicate the same part-s.
The nature of this invention consists in constructing a fountain-pen so that it shall have an adjustable tongue provided With a lateral projection or guide on one side of the same, substantially as hereinafter described, whereby in ruling with the said pen its ink is prevented from running into contact with the ruler, and consequently the blotting of the paper from such cause is avoided.
In the drawings, A is the pen, B the holder, and C the adjustable tongue which produces the guide and fountain. Y
The holder B is of that kind which has a tubular case, into which the pen A is adjustably secured in the usual manner, or so that it can be readily removed.v
The tongue C consists of a piece of metal, bone, glass, or other suitable material, made cylindricalat 'itswin'ifedrl to it in the tubular end e of the holder B, and somewhat of a spoon shape at it-s outer end f, as seen in Fig. 4. Between these two ends it is made thinner and narrower and also bent or formed so as to leave a space or fountain-chamber between it and the under side of the pen A when its extreme outer end is in contact with the under side of the pen at a point a short distance above its nibs or points, while one side or edge of the spoon-shaped part is made convex and fits along in the kerf of the penand also projects laterally, so as to form a smooth convex guide-bearing g, as seen in the drawings. Just above this convex bearing g there is a suflicient open space 7L left between it and the pen for the entrance of the ink, and also on the opposite side there is left in like manner a longer open `space 'L' for the same purpose.
For the purpose of facilitating in the renewal of pens and in cleaning, die., the cylindrical end d of the tongue C is fitted with a small stud Z, which passes loosely through a slot in the tube of the holder B, whereby the operator can either retract or push out the said tongue C, as occasion may require.
In using this writing and ruling instrument vafter adjusting the convex part g to the kerf of the pen, as described and shown, all that is necessary to supply it with ink is to dip it deeply into the iiuid in 4the usual manner, when on withdrawing it therefrom the fountain or space between the lower part of the tongue C and the pen A will be found charged with a sufficient quantity of ink to write a page of letter-paper, and in drawing lines the convex part g bears against a ruler, and thus the ink is kept apart from the said ruler and blotting prevented, and this pen can therefore be used successfully for drawing with as well as for ruling and writing.
Having thus fully described my invention and pointed out its utility, what I claim as new therein and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, ls-
The application to a fountain-pen of the lateral projection or ruling-guide g, the same being constructed and applied to an adjustable tongue C, so as to operate substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
