Filed Apr. 17, 1962, Ser. No. 188,129 2 filaims. (Cl. 248-101) This invention relates to kitchen utensils and is more particularly directed to a bag holding device.
A principal object of the present invention is to pro vide a device for releasably holding a bag in an open position to conveniently deposit articles therein.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a bag holding device which is mountable on the front Wall of a drawer of a kitchen cabinet and which holds a bag in an open position to receive waste food scraped off the counter directly into the bag.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a clamp-like device with a slotted portion for mounting the device on a cabinet drawer and a pivoted arm for releasably holding a waste food bag in an open position.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide a bag holding device for waste food which is simple in construction, inexpensive in cost and consisting of only two parts fabricated preferably of molded plastic.
With these and other objects in view, the invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, with the understanding, however, that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawing but may be changed or modified so long as such changes or modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.

FIGURE 1 is a fragmentary perspective of a kitchen cabinet showing my bag holding device mounted on a drawer and a bag being held thereon.
FIGURE 2 is a cross sectional view taken along the line 22 of FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 3 is a front elevational View of the bag holding device shown removed from the cabinet drawer.
FIGURE 4 is a cross sectional view taken along the line 4-4 of FIGURE 3.
Referring to the drawing wherein like numerals are used to designate similar parts throughout the several views, the numeral It) refers to a bag holding device for receiving waste food mounted on a front wall 11 of a cabinet drawer 12 of a kitchen cabinet 13. The kitchen cabinet 13 which is of conventional construction is provided with an approximately waist high counter 14 which overhangs the front wall 11 of the cabinet 13 as best shown by FIGURE 2.
My bag holding device consists of two parts, namely a body member B and an arm member A pivotally mounted on the body member B. The body member consists of two channel portions 15 and 1d, the channel portion 15 forming the support member for the device 19 while the channel portion 16 forming the support member for the pivoted arm A as is explained in detail hereinafter.
The channel portion 15 consists of a pair of vertically disposed elongated wall members 17 and 18 positioned in spaced parallel relation and joined at the top portion by a horizontal wall member 19. The elongated wall members 17 and 13 are preferably spaced apart a distance slightly larger than the thickness of the front wall 11 of the cabinet drawer in order that the bag holding device 19 may be received thereon.
The lower portion of the wall member 18 forms one side wall of the channel portion 16, the other being wall 20 positioned vertically in spaced parallel relation with the wall 18. The vertical walls 13 and 20 are joined by a horizontally disposed wall 21. The wall 21 is slotted as at 22 to prevent a bag 23 when placed in position in the channel portion 16 from being cut when the arm A is pivoted to secure the paper bag 23. Projections 24 which are positioned in opposed relation on the walls 20 and 18 at one end of the channel 16 adjacent the slotted portion 22 form the pivoting means for the arm A. The arm A consists of a pair of elongated vertical side wall members 25 positioned in spaced parallel relation and joined at their top edge by a horizontally disposed wall member 26. The wall members 25, 26 are longer than the chan nel portion 16 which receives the arm member A in sub stantially snug or close fitting relationship so that a portion of the arm member A extends beyond the slotted portion 16 where a handle or knob 27 is mounted on the outer side wall 25 for manipulating the arm member A. At the other end of the side wall members 25, there are provided a pair of bores 28 for receiving the projection 24 all of which permit the pivoting of the arm A.
In the normal use of my bag holding device 10 when used in the kitchen, the drawer 11 of a cabinet 13 is pulled outwardly a short distance and the channel portion 15 is fitted over the top of front wall 11 of the opened drawer 12. The knob 27 is grasped and forced upwardly causing the arm A to pivot to an open position as shown by FIG- URE 3. The bag or receptacle 23 which is to collect the waste food and other refuse, is opened and the top edge of one side of the bag 23 is placed well within the channel portion 16 as shown by FIGURE 2. The arm member A is then pivoted downwardly to its closed position engaging the upper portion of the paper bag 23 and firmly clamping the bag in an open position. The drawer 12 is now pushed inwardly of the cabinet 13 to its closed position. The bag holding device 19 will now be positioned beneath the overhanging portion of the counter 14 and the open bag 23 will extend therebeyond. To place refuse that is on the counter into the open bag 23, all one need to do is scrape or push the waste matter along the counter to the edge thereof where it will fall into the open bag. When the bag is full or when it is desired to dispose of the waste food accumulated in the bag 23, the arm member A is pivoted to its open position. This releases the top edge of the bag 23 from the bag holding device 11 which bag of refuse may be disposed. My bag holding device 10 is now ready to receive another empty bag 23.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A bag holding device comprising a pair of elongated vertical side wall members mounted in substantially spaced parallel relation, a horizontally disposed Wall member mounted along a top edge of each or said side wall members, a second elongated and horizontally disposed wall member mounted along the lower edge of one of said vertical side wall members, a further vertically disposed wall mounted on a free edge of said second horizontal wall member in substantially parallel relation with said one of said vertical side wall members, an arm memher, said arm member having a pair of elongated vertical side wall members mounted in substantially parallel relation, an elongated and horizontally disposed wall member mounted along the top edges of said side wall members of said arm member, pivot means pivot-ally mounting one end of said arm member to said further vertically disposed wall and said one of said pair of vertical side walls adjacent the lower edge whereby a top portion of a bag will be engaged by said arm member when pivoted to a closed position. v

Claims (1)

1. A BAG HOLDING DEVICE COMPRISING A PAIR OF ELONGATED VERTICAL SIDE WALL MEMBERS MOUNTED IN SUBSTANTIALLY SPACED PARALLEL RELATION, A HORIZONTALLY DISPOSED WALL MEMBER MOUNTED ALONG A TOP EDGE OF EACH OF SAID SIDE WALL MEMBERS, A SECOND ELONGATED AND HORIZONTALLY DISPOSED WALL MEMBER MOUNTED ALONG THE LOWER EDGE OF ONE OF SAID VERTICAL SIDE WALL MEMBERS, A FURTHER VERTICALLY DIS POSED WALL MOUNTED ON A FREE EDGE OF SAID SECOND HORIZONTAL WALL MEMBER IN SUBSTANTIALLY PARALLEL RELATION WITH SAID ONE OF SAID VERTICAL SIDE WALL MEMBERS, AN ARM MEMBER, SAID ARM MEMBER HAVING A PAIR OF ELONGATED VERTICAL SIDE WALL MEMBERS MOUNTED IN SUBSTANTIALLY PARALLEL RELATION, AN ELONGATED AND HORIZONTALLY DISPOSED WALL MEMBER MOUNTED ALONG THE TOP EDGES OF SAID SIDE WALL MEMBERS OF SAID ARM MEMBER, PIVOT MEANS PIVOTALLY MOUNTING ONE END OF SAID ARM MEMBER TO SAID FURTHER VERTICALLY DISPOSED WALL AND SAID ONE OF SAID PAIR OF VERTICAL SIDE WALLS ADJACENT THE LOWER EDGE WHEREBY A TOP PORTION OF A BAG WILL BE ENGAGED BY SAID ARM MEMBER WHEN PIVOTED TO A CLOSED POSITION.
