(Si. 281-34) The present invention relates, in general, to book covers and, in particular, to book covers which can b utilized for advertising purposes. Y

It is an object of the present invention to provide a transparent book cover or jacket which is adapted to be readily and easily slipped on or olf a book or a magazine and which includes portions outside the book covering areas which are adapted to contain advertising material.

It is another object of the present invention to provide a cover or jacket of the described type ywhich is formed from a single blank of transparent sheet material, which blank is provided with the advertisement receiving portions.

It is another object of the present invention to provide i a cover or jacket from a blank of the described type, which blank includes portions which 'form pockets for receiving the cover of the book or the cover pages of a magazine and portions as extend beyond said pockets to receive advertising material.

It is a further object of the present invention to provide a cover or jacket of the described type having pockets to receive a book cover and at least one auxiliary pocket for a pad or the like.

It is a still further object o fthe present invention to provide an auxiliary pocket on the outer surface of the book cover which can be folded and secured in position against such outer surface.

Other and further objects and advantages of the present invention will become readily apparent to those skilled in the art from a consideration of the following specification taken in connection with the appended drawings which illustrate the best modes presently contemplated for carrying out the invention.

In forming the book jacket or cover 12, the flaps 16 and 13 are folded on their respective fold lines 26 and 28 and are heat sealed to the body portion 14 to form the upper heat sealed edges 32-32, adjacent to the upper edge 36 of the jacket and the lower heat sealed edges 34-34 adjacent to the lower edge 38 of the jacket. Pursuant to an important feature of the present invention, the upper horizontal portion 56 of the book cover, which is defined between the top edge 36 and the upper edges 32 of pockets 4t) and 42, provides an advertis ing area 56 which is adapted to be suitably provided with advertising indicia 58. Similarly, the lower horizontal portion of the book cover, between the bottom edge 3S and the bottom edge 34 of pocket 4t?, extending to theinner edge 48 of pocket 52, provides an Iadvertising area 60 which is adapted to be suitably provided with advertising indicia 58. The advertising indicia is preferably provided on the blank 10 before the cover 12 is formed therefrom. Since the blank 10 is transparent, the advertising indicia 58 may be provided on either surface thereof.

The projection 22 is utilized to form a carrying loop 62 for the cover 12. The loop 62 is formed by heat sealing the free end 64 of projection 22 to the body portion 14 of the blank 10. The other projection 24 functions as a book mark simply by bending it downwardly at upper edge 36 to the broken line position thereof shown in FIGURE 2.

A book or a magazine BM may be readily provided with a cover or jacket 12 by simply inserting the sections of the book cover 68 or the outer cover pages of the magazine, into the

44 and 46, respectively, as shown in FIGURE 6. The latter figure shows a book cover 66 which is similar in all respects to the book cover 12 except for the auxiliary pocket 52, the loop 62 and the book mark 24 which are omitted from cover 66. It will be noted that the omission of pocket 52 increases the size of the lower advertising portion 60 in cover 66 so that it is substantially the same size as the upper advertising portion 56.

It will be noted that the advertising material 58 is readily pocket yedges 32 'or the lower pocket edges 34, .as theA case may be. It will be understood that 4the auxiliary pocket 52 can be utilized to hold a pad, pencils, or the like which may extend outwardly from the pocket opening 54 to overlie the pocket 42, so as not to interfere withv the pages of the book or magazine. v

Referring now to FIGURE 4 in detail, there is shown a modified form of book cover 68. Book cover 68 may be, similar to either book cover 12 (without loop 62 and book mark 24) or book cover66.` In either case the upper advertising portion 56 is folded upon itself and heat sealed to the blank body 14 at the free edge 7) of said portion S6, above the upper edges 32 of the pockets 40` side of the cover 68 of the book .or magazine BM is inserted Vinto the pocket Y 4t), as in -the previously described jackets, and the otherV Y substantially similar to jacket 66.

Claims

1. A BOOK JACKET COMPRISING A BODY PORTION FORMED OF TRANSPARENT FLEXIBLE SHEET MATERIAL, SAID BODY PORTION BEING PROVIDED ON ONE SURFACE THEREOF WITH A PAIR OF LATERALLY SPACED BOOK COVER ENCLOSURES, SAID ENCLOSURES EACH HAVING AN OPENING EXTENDING BETWEEN THE UPPER AND LOWER EDGES OF SAID JACKET, AND SAID ENCLOSURES HAVING CLOSED UPPER AND LOWER MARGINAL EDGES EXTENDING TRANSVERSELY OF SAID OPENINGS, AND AN ADVERTISING EXTENSION PROVIDED ON SAID JACKET BETWEEN ASSOCIATED CLOSED MAR-
