Description

mild
Feb. 23, 1965 J. B. RICHARDS, JR 3,170,741 DEVICE FOR STORING FLAT ARTICLES Filed .Dec 11. 1961 3,170,741 I DEVICE FOR STORING FLAT ARTICLES James B. Richards, Jr., Auburn, Ala. (607 Alder St., Myrtle Beach, S.C.) Filed Dec. 11, 1961, Ser. No. 158,358
2 Claims. (Cl..312--12) The inventionrelates to an improvement in a device for storage of fiat articles and more particularly to a device-for the storage of articles such as phonograph records or the rectangular album which holds a record.
In the storage of phonograph records, for example, it is necessary to store the same in a separated condition so that the opposed surfaces will not be scratched and so that the records either in an album or not may be easily grasped. Also it is desirable that phonograph records or the like be stored on edge whereby a maximum number of the same may be stored in a minimum of space and at the same time be readily accessible to the user.
It is therefore an object of the invention to provide a holder for flat articles which will hold the flat objects in positive vertical position and freely accessible.
It is a further object to provide a holder for records and the like which will store a maximum number of records in a minimum of space, that is,'multiple sections in a minimum of space, and which may be easily moved from place to place.
It is an additional object to provide a holder for flat articles having simple, eflicient, and extremely economical divider support members for fiat articles.
It is a still further object to provide a holder which may be rotated for selection of the articles held thereby.
It will not behere attempted to set forth and indicate all of the various objects and advantages incident to the invention, but other objects and advantages will be referred to in or else will become apparent from that which follows.
The invention will appear more clearly from the following detailed description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, showing by way of example a preferred embodiment of the inventive idea wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout.
In the drawings forming part of this application:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the holder, segments of which having record albums positioned therein.
FIGURE 2 is a bottom plan view thereof.
FIGURE 3 is a sectional view on the lines 3-3 of FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 4 is a sectional view on the line 44 of FIGURE 3.
The holder A includes the circular top member 10, and secured to the under side of the top 10 is the vertical divider wall member 12 positioned on the diameter of the top. Also secured to the underside of the top 10 and at right angles to and abutting the wall 12 are the vertical walls 14 and .16 lying in the same plane. The walls 14 and 16 actually divide the wall 12 into two walls 18 and 2t) and these together with the walls 14 and 16 form four equal wedge-shaped areas. The walls 14, 16, 18 and 20 are secured at the lower edges thereof to the intermediate circular support member 22 which is substantially the diameter of the top member 10 and coextensive therewith.
Secured to the underside of the intermediate support member ,22 is the divider wall 24 which is identical to United States Patent divider wall 12 and coextensive therewith. Also secured to the underside of the intermediate member 22 and coextensive with and identical to the walls and 16 are the walls 26 and 28. The walls 26 and 28 actually divide the wall 24 into two walls 30. and 32 and these together with the walls v26 and 28 form four equal wedgeshaped areas. The walls 26, 28, 30 and 32 are secured at the lower edges thereof to the circular base member 34 which is substantially the diameter of the'inter mediate member- 22 and coextensive therewith. The above construction provides four upper Wedge-shaped storage compartments and four lower wedge-shaped storage compartments.
Each compartment has a multiplicity of divider members 36, and in this respect each compartment is identical so that for purposes of description, only the dividers of the compartment bounded by'walls 14 and 18 will be described. A hook eye 38 is provided which is secured into the wall 12 at the apex of the compartment formed by the diverging walls 14 and 18, including support '22 which forms the bottom of said compartment. A multiplicity of spaced holes 40 are formed spaced from but closely adjacent the outer circumference of the intermediate support 22. A length of thin wire or cord 42 is secured at the outer hole 40', then passed over the hook eye 38, then extended downwardly through the first hole 40 adjacent the outer hole 40 and then upwardly through the next hole 40, then upwardly to and over the hook eye 38 and then downwardly to the next hole 40 and so on until the complete series of dividers 44 are crested as shown more particularly in FIGURES 1 and 3. The dividers 44 form a multiplicity of slots in which flat articles such as phonograph records may be stored in an upright position and which are easily selected.
The lower inner corner of each of the lower walls 26, 28, 30 and 32 is formed with a cut-out portion 46.
Further provided is the support base 48 including the support bar members 50 and 52 which are joined at the center of each with the same at right angles to each other. At each end of each bar 50 and 52 is formed a recess 54 into which a small wheel 56 extends. The wheels 56 are each mounted on a shaft 58 connected to the bar support.
The support base 48 is rotatably connected to the under surface of the base member 34 by means of the bolt 60 secured to the center of the base 48 and extending upwardly through the base member 34 and secured by means of the nut 62 in the opening formed by the cut out portions 46 of the walls 24, 26, 28 and 30. The nut 62 is tightened so that the wheels 56 lightly contact the undersurface of the base 34. As a result the holder A may be rotated upon the base 48 for selection of a record, for example, from any of the compartments heretofore described. It is apparent that one tier of compartments may be formed or more than the two presented within the spirit and scope of the invention.
To prevent indiscriminate jamming of the inner edges of the record holders 62 at the apex of a compartment and hold the holders 62 in symmertical formation, the wedge-shaped block 64 is secured at the apex of each compartment at the bottom thereof.
The invention is not to be understood as restricted to the details set forth since these may be modified within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Havingthus described the invention, what is claimed member is provided with a series of successively spaced as new and desired to be secured by letters Patent is: holes adjacent its circumference and wherein said cord- 1.
