MULTIPURPOSE COSMETIC CASE Filed July 19, 1961 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 F rank A. P/men/e/ 1N VENTOR M Q0/6300. BY 'w United States Patent 3,171,416 MULTIPURPOSE COSMETIC CASE Frank A. Pimentel, 206 South Road, Page Park, Fort Myers, Eta.
Filed July 19, 1961, Ser. No. 125,162 8 Claims. (Cl. 132-49) This invention relates to an improved multipurpose self-contained swivel-type make-up case or compact resembling a lipstick case but differing therefrom in that it provides the user not only with a lipstick but rouge, face powder, and suitable applicators therefor.
Multipurpose cosmetic compacts are not new. For example, the Burnett Patent 2,273,559 reveals a handbagtype vanity case having optionally usable facilities such as lipstick, face powder and nail file. The lip and facial rouge compact in the Williams Patent 2,219,000 is also generally indicative of the subject matter of the instant proceeding in that it discloses a barrel or case with end caps, face and lip rouge media and manually shiftable rod with selectively projectible and retractible applicators.
An objective in the instant matter is to improve upon the above mentioned prior patents and any similarly constructed and performing beauty aid compacts and kits. It follows that the instant invention has to do with a novelly constructed sectional multipurpose cosmetic case which offers a user thereof readily applicable and removable caps at both ends of the case, one containing rouge and the other containing face powder in cake form. Then, too, applicators for these selectively usable cosmetics are provided.
Another aspect of the concept which is likewise significant has to do with the cover for that end or section of the case on which said cover is removably fitted. This cover comprises a simple open-ended sleeve provided at an outer end with a detachable rouge-containing cap having a practical and convenient projectible and retractible applicator for the rouge.
Novelty is also predicated on a double-barrel swivel case having a projectible and retractible lipstick at one end, say the inner end, and a detachable cap at the outer end, said cap containing powder in cake form and serving to accommodate a projectible and retractible applicator carrying a powder puff.
Stated somewhat more explicitly the invention is further unique in that the elongated case is made up of swivelly coupled sections or barrels, there being a thimble or a bushing mounted intermediate the ends of the case, the bore of the bushing providing a guide bearing and serving to accommodate a reciprocable rod having a puff equipped applicator on one end and a cup on the other end, said cup constituting a second applicator but, more specifically being provided with a projectible and retractible lipstick.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
FIGURE 1 is a view in perspective showing the complete ready-to-use multipurpose cosmetic compact or case;
FIGURE 2 is a view in perspective of the same with the rouge cap removed and the sponge-like rouge applicator projected to a ready-to-use position;
FIGURE 3 is likewise a view in perspective with the case cover removed as shown at the left and wherein the lipstick is shown in its projected ready-to-use position;
FIGURE 4 is also a view in perspective which may be compared with FIGURE 2 except that in this instance the face powder containing cap is shown detached with the 3,171,416 Patented Mar. 2, 1965 projectible and retractible powder puff equipped applicator in its projected ready-to-use position;
FIGURE 5 is an exploded perspective view showing the straight slotted and helically slotted components which constitute more-or-less conventional means for projecting and retracting the lipstick and puff-carrying applicators;
FIGURE 6 is a central longitudinal section on an enlarged scale through the completed device seen in FIG- URE 1;
FIGURES 7, 8 and 9 are enlarged cross-sections on the lines 77, 88 and 99 of FIGURE 6;
FIGURE 10 is a similar cross-section looking in the opposite direction and taken on the plane of the section line 10-10 of FIGURE 6; and
FIGURE 11 is a view in perspective of the normally concealed dual purpose projectible and retractible plungerlike applicator unit.
Reference will be made first to FIGURE 3 wherein it will be noted that the double barrel or swivel-type lipstick case is denoted as an entity or unit by the numeral 12. The readily applicable and removable cover is denoted at 14. This cover comprises an open-ended sleeve 18 the inner open end of which is denoted at 16. The outer end of this sleeve is denoted at 29 (FIG. 2) and has a reduced protruding neck 22 provided with at least one radial or peripherally projecting lug 24 constituting a keeper and which is adapted to be rotatably and releasably connected with a bayonet slot 26 in a readily applicable and removable cap 28, said cap being provided in the receptacle portion thereof with a fixed cup 30 containing a first cosmetic preparation; namely, face rouge 32, This first applicator comprises a sponge or the like 34 of prerequisite size mounted (FIG. 6) on a cup-shaped slide 36 telescopingly mounted in the cooperating outer end portion of the sleeve and provided with a bayonet pin carrying a knob 38 operable in a bayonet slot 46. Thus the sleeve or cover 14 is adapted to be removably mounted on the case 12 and in fact stays in position until one desires to use the lipstick 42. In other words this cover may remain in place on the case 12 when one is using the rouge 32 and also the projectible and retractible applicator means 34 and 36. Normally, however, the slide or applicator 36 is retracted and recedes into the outer end portion 20 which, of course, allows the cap 28 to be applied and fastened with the bayonet slot 26 and keeper or lug 24. It is within the purview of the invention to use duplicate bayonet slot and connection on a diametrically oppisite side of the cap 28 (as shown in FIG. 7) but this feature is optional. So much for the novel cover or sleeve and its detachable rouge cap and applicator means 34 and 36. Taking up now the double barrel or swivel type case 12 it is to be pointed out, generally speaking, that it is characterized by an inwardly disposed barrel 44 over which the cover 14 is removably and frictionally fitted, this barrel being open at the end 46 to accommodate the projectible and retractible lipstick 42. The outwardly disposed barrel or section 48 is slightly larger in diameter and swivelly mounted and is open at the outer end (righthand end in the drawings), this end being designated at 50 (FIG. 4) and having a reduced neck 52 provided with a lug or detent 54 releasably engageable in the bayonet slot 56 embodied in the rim of a detachable cap 58, this cap also having a receptacle portion provided with a cup 60 fixed in place and containing a supply of face powder in cake form as at 62.
The projectible and retractible applicator means (normally retracted and confined in the hollow portion of the overall barrel or case as shown in FIG. 6) is characterized by a novel unit which will be referred to as a plungertype applicator unit or means 64 (FIG. 11). This means comprises a linearly straight rod 66 which has a disk-like head 68 on the righthand end carrying a powder puff 70. The other end is also provided with a head but more specifically a holding cup 72 for the lipstick 42 (FIG. 6) said cup being provided on one side (FIG. 11) with a radially projecting plunger operating lug'74. It should be pointed outhere that the means which imparts reciprocatory motion to the novel dual applicator unit 64 for projecting either 70 or 42 is old in the art and will be touched upon generally here. As a matter of fact the means is similar to that shown for example in prior Patent 1,749,565 of March 4, 1930 and 2,565,346 of August 21, 1951. The tubular or open-ended cylinder 76 has a straight keying slot 78 in which the lug 74 is fitted as shown in FIGURE 6, said slot opening through the righthand end of the cylinder. This cylinder is fitted telescopically in a companion cylinder 80 having a heli cal slot 82 opening through the respective ends and also accommodating the key or lug 74. These component parts 76 and 80 are assembled and fitted in cooperative relationship in the barrel or case section 44. The cup 72 is slidable in the cylinder 76 and one end of this cylinder is fixed by a collar or band 84 (FIG. 6) to a reduced end portion of a bushing or thimble 86 having a bore 88 therein and fitting telescopically into a cylindrical liner 90 friction fitted in the barrel section 48. Thus the section 48 and lining 90 constitute a handle to accomplish the swivel action and by holding the barrel 44 and the barrel 48 and turning the two relative to each other (in a well known manner) the applicator means or unit 64 is reciprocated or slid back and forth by reason of the rod 66 slidingly mounted in the guide bore or bearing 88. It follows that by removing the cap 28 as shown in FIG- URE 2 and operating the finger-grip 38 in relation to the bayonet slot 40 the rouge applicator 34 may be brought into play without, of course, having to remove the sleeve 18 from the barrel 44. In FIGURE 3 (the cover sleeve 18 having been removed) and by catching hold of the handle section 48 and section 44 and swivelling the same the mechanism described and'shown in detail in FIG- URE 6 comes into play and projects the lipstick 42 for use. This mode of use is'brought out in FIGURE 3. In FIGURE 4 it can be assumed that the cover 14 has been applied to its normal position and that the lipstick has been withdrawn or retracted. Then and as shown at the right in FIGURE 4 the cap 58 may be removed and the handle 48 rotated in the proper manner to bring the applicator means 64 into action again and in so doing to project the head or disk 68 and powder puff 70 thereon. The puff when properly rubbed on the powder 62 may now be properly brought into use. It should be pointed out here that the aforementioned sleeve 52 (FIG. 4) can be, and preferably is, an integral extension of the fixed cylindrical liner 90. a
It is believed that a careful consideration of the specification in conjunction with the views of the drawings will enable the reader to obtain a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction and arrangement of component parts as well as the attending features and advantages and mode of operation and use. Therefore, a more lengthy description is believed to be unnecessary.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
