Filed Oct. 31, 1961, Ser. No. 148,880 1 Claim. (Cl. 46-6) This invention relates to bubble blowers and particularly to an improvement in which small bubbles may be blown inside large bubbles.
Prior to this invention, most bubble blowers have been of the type capable of blowing only one bubble at a time. While attempts have been made to provide blowers capable of blowing more than one bubble at a time, such have not been successful because the smaller bubbles have been so close in size to the large bubble as to greatly limit their number as well as their movement. Such devices were complicated relative to the results produced. Most such devices were further objectionable in that the bubble producing medium often leaked back into the mouth of the user and dripped from the bubble producing end. Since soap bubbles are relatively short lived, the extended time necessary to carry out the difficult multiple bubble operation limited the size produced thereby and caused many to burst before they could be completed and dislodged from the blower.
Accordingly, it is an important object of this invention to provide a bubble blower capable of placing small bubbles inside a large bubble permitting free movement of the small bubble inside the large bubble.
Another object of this invention is to reduce the elicit of the user necessary to blow a large bubble with small bubbles inside.
Another object of this invention is to provide a blower capable of blowing a large bubble quickly and placing a large number of relatively small free moving bubbles therein.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a bubble blower having the above advantages and yet prevent flow of the bubble producing medium into the mouth of the user.
Another object of the invention is to provide a bubble blower having the above advantages and yet prevent dripping from the bubble producing end of the blower.
Yet another advantage of the invention is the provision of a versatile blower permitting bubbles of a variety of sizes to be blown and dislodged therefrom.
The construction designed to carry out the invention will be hereinafter described, together with other features thereof.
The invention will be more readily understood from a reading of the following specification and by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part thereof, wherein an example of the invention is shown and wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a plan view illustrating a bubble blower constructed in accordance with the present invention,
FIGURE 2 is a sectional plan view, at a reduced scale, taken on the line 2-2 in FIGURE 1, and
FIGURE 3 is an end elevation looking toward the lower end of FIGURE 2.
A bubble blower illustrating a preferred embodiment of the invention includes a relatively large tubular member A open on both ends and preferably tapering inwardly toward one end thereof. The large tubular member A has an opening B therein between the ends. The tapering end of the large tubular member has an open mouthpiece C. Means D are carried within said relatively large tubular member for producing small bubbles, and a relatively small tubular member E extends from said means producing small bubbles to the mouthpiece. blown into the mouthpiece causes additional air to be drawn through the opening in the large tubular member between the ends thereof to blow a large bubble at the open end of the large tubular member opposite the mouthpiece, and small bubbles may be blown inside the large bubble. Preferably, the means D including a tubular housing producing small bubbles also include an opening F for pulling in additional air. A lip G is formed at the bubble producing end of the blower to prevent dripping. If desired, means in the form of a bafiie H may be pro vided to produce air movements within the large bubble. A shield J is also preferably provided to prevent flow of bubble producing medium into the mouth of the user.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the tubular body portion A may be constructed of any suitable material, preferably clear plastic. The tubular member A has a body portion 10 of uniform cylindrical cross section which tapers toward one end as at 11. An aperture B is provided therein in the form of a plurality of elongated openings 12; between the ends thereof and preferably adjacent the restricted portion 11.
A mouthpiece may be formed by the restricted tapering end 11 or a mouthpiece C may be placed therein by a pressed fit. The mouthpiece C has a tubular lower portion 13 and a tubular restricted inner extension in the form of a shield 14. This shield 14 prevents the return of liquid bubble producing medium which normally escapes through the opening 12. The bubble producing medium is preferably in the form of a soapy fluid.
The additional bubble producing means D are carried within the bore of the tubular body portion 10 and has a tubular body portion 15. A tubular member E supports the tubular body or housing 15. The tubular member E is in the form of a tube 16 having a uniform cross section and is secured to the closed end 15a of the tubular body 15. Radially projecting spacing members 18 support the bubble producing means D within the bore of the tubular body 10.
At the free end of the tubular body 15, a bead or lip G, presenting an internal groove 19, is provided for preventing bubble producing medium from dripping therefrom and for carrying the bubble 20. Within the large bubble 20, it will be noted that a number of small bubbles 2 1 are produced at the free end of the tubular body 15. If desired, means in the form of a baffle H may be provided to direct the volume of air introduced into adjacent portions of the large bubble 29. This causes air curents within the large bubble 26, causing movement of the relatively small bubbles 2 1 within the large bubble. The tu e E may be eccentrically mounted to cause such air currents if such means are preferred. A shield 22 may be provided if desired.
The swirling movement of the small bubbles within the large bubble is most impressive and pleasing to children and adults alike. The toy blower is also versatile in that the size of the large bubble may be controlled in relation to the size of the small bubbles by placing the tongue over the outer end of the tube E so as to permit entry of air only into the large bubble 20. When desired, the blowing of small bubbles may be commenced by removing the tongue from the tube E and blowing into the mouthpiece C and the tube E simultaneously. The appealing results of this toy are produced with relative case because of the jet action of the openings 12 and 17, producing additonal air to that blown into the mouthpiece, making it possible to blow a relatively large bubble quickly.
While a preferred embodiment of the invention has been described using specific terms, such description is for illustrative purposes only, and it is to be understood CD that changes and variations may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the following claim.
What is claimed is:
A bubble blower including a relatively large tubular member open at both ends, said large tubular member havingan opening therein between the open ends, one end of the large tubular member having an open mouthpiece, a relatively small tubular housing open at one end thereof remote from the mouthpiece carried Within said relatively large tubular member, said small tubular housing having an opening in its wall intermediate its ends, and a tubular member of substantially smaller cross-section than the small tubular housing communicating with and extending from said small tubular housing to said mouthpiece, the outer surface of said small tubular member being spaced from the inner surface of the mouthpiece so that air may be caused to be admitted into the large tubular member without admitting air to the small tubular member, whereby air blown into the mouthpiece causes additional air to be drawn through the opening in the large tubular member between the ends thereof to blow a large bubble at the open end of the large tubular member opposite the mouthpiece, and whereby additional air is drawn in through the opening in the small tubular housing and small bubbles may be blown inside the large bubble.
